lettergothic Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 I want to export a transparent PNG as a scalable vector EPS. The image is an 1800’s b+w line-cut (not grayscale) of some machine from an old encyclopedia. 1) I converted the original JPG into a transparent PNG. 2) When attempting to export PNG as an EPS, the export dialog says the “some areas will be rasterized”. 3) If I go into “more”, in the export dialog, and select “rasterize: nothing”, the resulting file is a weird grey object on a black ground that opens as a PDF and is not scalable. –there’s only 1 layer –there’re are no layer adjustments and no layer effects applied. How do I export the PNG as a scalable, B+W vector EPS? thanks, lettergothic Quote
Medical Officer Bones Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 It doesn't work like that: saving a bitmap as a EPS will not auto-magically convert it to a vector file. Instead, you must use a bitmap to vector conversion tool to do this first, and then save as an eps, svg (or any other vector compatible file format). Unfortunately, none of the Affinity products currently have this functionality built-in (as of yet). The good news is that a copy of the open source Inkscape does offer this feature, and is easy to use. Here's a quick tutorial: https://goinkscape.com/how-to-vectorize-in-inkscape/ After "vectorizing" an image, save as SVG, and import in Designer for further editing. Bigassdroids 1 Quote

Well, bummer on no way to do this in Affinity. I was doing this in Freehand 20+ years ago. 7 hours ago, Pšenda said: Or try online vectorize tools. firstdefence Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 During the process of turning a jpeg into a png with transparency didn't you have the option to also export as an EPS file instead of a png file? Freehand was a head of it's time and a seasoned app. Using inkscape's potrace implementation is as easy as pie, it even has a black and white option and would likely take you less than a minute to do. While in Inkscape, I would also run Path: Simplify it reduces the nodes produced by tracing substantially.
