Hello, it depends on the way the PDF files have been previously generated, if the used fonts have been embedded or not in the documents etc. - When you create and export PDF files with the Affinity procucts you can too define how this should be handled, see the export option panel for PDF settings there:

PDF Export Options panel (more ... button)

  • Embed fonts—select an option for handling fonts used in the document.
    • Text as Curves—all text is converted to curves. This ensures the resulting exported file will display correctly regardless of the fonts installed on the viewing device.
    • All Fonts—any fonts used in the document are embedded in the exported file. This ensures the resulting exported file will display correctly regardless of the fonts installed on the viewing device.
    • Uncommon Fonts—fonts used are only embedded in the exported file if they are not part of the fonts traditionally installed on most devices. The viewing device must have the expected fonts installed to view any common fonts in the exported file.
    • No Fonts—no fonts are embedded in the exported file. A viewing device must have all the used fonts installed to accurately view the exported file.
  • Subset fonts—when selected, embedded fonts will only include the glyphs used in the document. If this option is off, all glyphs for the used fonts are embedded in the exported file, regardless of whether they appear in the document or not.

Hi @serena.bosca,

Welcome to the forums.

We do not support Embedded fonts. Alternatively, you can choose not to convert the text to actual text but to rasterise.

Untick that option and see how it goes. Just bear in mind that your text will be rasterised and no longer editable.

Thanks,

Gabe.

Is there any chance that you will do so in the future?

This seems a rather serious omission for software which is supposed to open and edit PDF files!

That option is like the one in PagePlus: all it does is to give you large blocks of easily editable text, instead of trying to preserve the layout accurately by splitting the text into lots of separate objects.

Hello, and now, Is there any update?

It is extremely common laying out a book to have to edit a pdf placed inside text (equations, graphs, etc). Mathematical symbols, such as integrals, greek variables... disappear when the pdf is opened. With the "other" program the fonts not present are traced to maintain the look of the pdf. The fact that Affinity does not do this is a handicap that makes it impossible for me to migrate from the other suite to this one.

It should not be so complicated to implement this capability when other software has been doing it for decades, right?

Hello. I somehow found not a very elegant solution. For some of you might be what you need (for me, it worked). I had a PDF that I needed just to print as book/booklet, so what I did is that I converted all the PDF into jpeg and then merged them as one PDF. Now he is not editable anymore, but rasterized. It maintained the math formulas and all the data. I used pdf24 for converting/merging the jpegs.

Hope will help some of you.
