I'm working on a 50 page brochure in Publisher. Only 15MB in size. And yet the program does not run smoothly. When entering text, I sometimes have to wait a few seconds before text appears. (iMac 2020 with Intel i7, 48MB Ram)

What could be the reason?

Check your 2  Master pages

Both of them contain a "Group" at the very bottom in the Layers panel

That "Group" contains 62 other Groups

Each of those 62 groups contains 77 miniature Picture frames

Thats a total of 4,774 picture frames per Master page

I don't think you want those Groups

Deleting them should speed up the document

Hello Carl,

Thank you for your quick help. I need these 4774 points - they are a grid that should make handwritten writing easier. I also hid them - but that doesn't affect the speed. The background image is also hidden....

Is it also going too slow on your System? Otherwise it's a problem in my system...

You say you need 4774 points, but do you need 4774 miniature Picture Frame objects? If all you need is the points, why not create a grid of 62 by 77 lines and then use the intersections of the lines as guides for the handwriting? :/

I noticed the document was slow immediately I opened it and it was using a lot of CPU time when just browsing or moving stuff etc but I did not see a major issue when just adding text

Save the document to a new file name then delete the Groups from that document and try entering text again. If you still see a delay then you may have something else wrong with your computer/document.

If there is no delay then the Groups are most likely the issue

... or draw directly Circle shape.

That's the very least you could do. In fact, you can reduce the number of objects needed for the grid from 4774 to 1 if you just create a table that runs across the spread and set the cell height and cell line styles accordingly. Visually, the difference ranges from identical to unnoticeable.

Just out of curiosity - what procedure did you choose?

Since I noticed that you had dots defined on both Master Pages (Master A/B), you can take advantage of the fact that a Master page can also have a Master page. So I put the dots in a specific Master page (Master with dots), and I assigned it to both main Master pages (A and B).

Any changes in the dots definition will be automatically transferred to both main Master Pages.

The proposal of KaffeeundSalz brought the solution. Very simple and elegant and the program works again at normal speed!
