How to stroke text and retain sharp corners?

Recommended Posts

I want to apply stroke to a text.
I also want the corners of the stroke to have sharp edges.

I've selected a font that has sharp edges: Robinson Regular (although I've also tested this process with other fonts).

I've found a couple of tutorials on Google: they say that to apply stroke to text, the user should go to 'layer'->'layer effects'.
In the layer effects dialogue I can increase the 'radius' parameter.
As the radius parameter increases, a stroke appears.
However, the stroke has soft corners.

How do apply a stroke but keep the corners sharp?

After you have your text set up the way that you want it, you can convert the text to a curve, This is Affinity's equivalent of converting Text to a Shape in Photoshop.

Once you convert the text to a curve you can change the border to sharp corners and other aspects of the border:

In the Stroke panel try changing the Join setting to Mitre Join

If you are using AD or APub just select the text you want to add the stroke to, & in the Stroke panel set the stroke width as desired. Then, to get sharp edges you can adjust the Miter value.

If you are using AP, you can convert the text to curves, as @SolidSnake2003 suggested & then after selecting all the curves with the Move Tool selected use the stroke options on the Context toolbar as above.

Frustratingly, the documentation describes the stoke panel, but doesn't describe how find it.

Showing, hiding, and otherwise manipulating panels isn’t mentioned in the individual panel information pages in the Help because the same functionality applies to all panels.

To find out about manipulating panels you can, for instance, go to the Help, type stroke panel into the search bar, click on the Stroke Panel link, scroll down to where it says "Customising the workspace" (bottom of the page) and then clicking on that link.

However, I think it might be good if the Help for each panel contained a simple line of text which said something like: “To see the <whatever> Panel, choose <whatever> from the Window menu.”

You can also do this in Photo quite easily, if you are using the Text Frame Tool, after you have increased your radius parameter and the stroke appears, by changing the Alignment to Inside.  Although this will reduce the radius of the text somewhat.
