[SOLVED] [1.9.2.1035] Noto Serif Fonts exclusion

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

Well, basically, what's happening is the following:

  • There are 72 Noto Serif Fonts from Font Squirrel
  • Noto Serif Fonts are having some kind of exclusion between 4 of them and the rest in Affinity Designer listed Fonts
  • This means that when you install Regular, Bold, Regular Italic and Bold Italic you won't be able to see any of the rest of the Fonst and vice versa

EXAMPLE

I have created the following file in Inkscape and then exported it to PDF:

imagen.png.dfc8e891c1a2be597aebe8a96c1e15fe.png

When I try to open it in Affinity Designer, this is what happens:

And only the Thin weights are rendered:

If I uninstall the Thin weights and try to open the PDF file again, this is what happens:

EDIT: Solved thanks to @LibreTraining who shared a more recent version.

Best regards!

A lot of undesirable things going on there! Any app that works with text should be able to display, at a minimum, the Regular, Bold, Italic, and Bold Italic styles of any font. And the default replacement for a normal serif font shouldn’t be a condensed sans-serif font.

If I only let the basic 4 Fonts, they display normally, but they exclude the other Fonts and viceversa if I install them as well, so I can't see them available the 72 of them. :(

First, while it is nice to shop for fonts at FontSquirrel, you need to be wary of how old they are.
Someone (anyone) uploads some fonts and they are often never updated after that.
If I see something I like on FontSquirrel, I go find the original source if possible and get the most current version.

Best place to get the current Noto fonts is from Google's own Get Noto page.
https://www.google.com/get/noto/#serif-lgc

The fonts you got from FontSquirrel are very old.
Font Squirrel: v1.020 - November 29, 2012 - 2414 glyphs
From Get Noto: v2.000 - September 19, 2017 - 3243 glyphs

Second, at first glance I did not see anything wrong with the older fonts which would cause your issues.
Try installing the newer fonts and see how that goes.

Also make sure you do not have any duplicate files in your fonts directory.
Lots of apps install Noto fonts, including LibreOffice, and macOS.
Easy to get duplicates when installing the whole super-family.
And that could cause this issue.

If you still have issues, I will take a closer look.

The bad thing is that they only have the 4 main Fonts (I know I'm looking kind of greedy).

I installed them for the very first time today, on my Windows machine, and I notcied I have 68 out of the 72 available weights, and looking at them, I noticed which ones were missing. Tried installing the ones from google Fotns to see if they were compatible but I got the same result.

Now, on other programs like Inkscape I can see all of them.

Thanks for the time you put into this, by the way. :)

Best regards!

Which ones are missing from the link that @LibreTraining provided?

I have noticed that if you go to fonts.google.com and search for Noto Serif you get to https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Noto+Serif?query=noto+serif#standard-styles which has only four weights. I was surprised that it doesn't seem to have the larger list that LibreTraining came up with.

Ah, what I was saying refers to my previous experience.

Now, I downloaded the version @LibreTraining pointed to and it works well now. Thanks you! :)

Best regards!
