Place starts looking for text files instead of png.

I was creating a tiled pattern similar to the ones I describe here. This involves placing several images onto the background, flattening and applying an affine transformation, then repeating this process until the background is invisible.

Typically, the Place command always looks for a png file. However sporadically, it wants to look for text files instead. Having told it to look for png files, it does so for the next few. This looking for text files seems to occur after I flatten the image. Why is this happening, and how can I stop it?

Windows 11, Affinity Photo 2.4.2 Designer 2.4.2 and Publisher 2.4.2 (mainly Photo).

CPU: Intel Core i5 8500 @ 3.00GHz. RAM: 32.0GB  DDR4 @ 1063MHz, Graphics: 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050

Is the Text Frame Tool selected?

Having a Text Frame selected will also cause that.

I think you're right about that bug.

However, when either of those two conditions is true, it's intentional that Place looks for text files.

If I use File >> Place, text files are preselected even with the Move Tool active, whereas the Place Image Tool is looking for images. Place from the menu and Place Image Tool are not identical, because the first one has a shortcut, the second not.

What if I want to place an inline image in my text?

Why assume I want to place a text file?

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

If you have a tool for manipulating text, then in my opinion it is more than likely.

I have been using the File > Place option. What and where is the Place Image tool?

The only tool highlighted in my document is the Move tool.

After placing each images, the History Panel says: 'Set text stylesheet'. Here is the panel after three placements, moving one image then flattening:

I place many, many images in my documents. In Indesign, there was a keyboard shortcut for this. In Publisher, it's a right pain to have to move the mouse across to the Place Image tool. Anyone worked out a way of invoking this from the keyboard?
