When a layer is locked you cannot select it directly on canvas (only from the Layers panel which we consider a deliberate action) thus preventing it from being painted/modified. The only exception to this is the background layer (on the bottom of the layers stack) which we deliberately made selectable even when locked (for technical reasons). To prevent it from being painted/changed accidentally, place/create a new pixel layer below it in the Layers panel. This turns your "original" background layer un-selectable again on canvas. Jetdriver Posted March 2, 2020 Author Share Posted March 2, 2020 The Designer documents in question have multiple Vector Layers. i used to be able to draw a selection box on the canvas and select just the items within the box that were part of unlocked visible layers only (the selection mode is “all layers”). The rest was always left unselected. Now, both in the iPad and Mac versions, when I draw a selection box, it selects all the visible items, even if they are part of a locked layer. This does not happen If the item is locked individually within the layer. Jetdriver Posted March 31, 2020 Author Share Posted March 31, 2020 I noticed an update was posted for the mac software recently. Any progress on solving this locked layer selection issue? Still behaves strangely for me: if the bounding box is enclosing the object it is selected regardless of whether the layer is locked or not. Jetdriver Posted August 10, 2020 Author Share Posted August 10, 2020 yeah... now its not selecting some items in unlocked layers. with "edit all layers" selected, when a bounding box is drawn, some items are not being selected. Also sometimes the bounding box is not able to be drawn until after clicking on the workspace... so whatever the fix was, it created other problems. However please bear in mind that the default selection method requires the bounding box to encompass the whole object before it is selected. What are the "technical reasons"? Selectable only the bottom pixel layer is not intuitive. I'd like to know why it need to be selectable. Update: I think the reason is to make its behavior consistent throughout Affinity Suite? Affinity Photo has editable locked background layer. But Photoshop has non-selectable background layer.
