  1. I am attaching a free PDF called “Affinity Photo from Ten Thousand Feet.” This is a 41 page book that explains many of the concepts and questions that forum members ask frequently. Much of the information is based on presentations given to my local photography club. Some of it is based on a series of articles written for the club’s newsletter. Much of the book is newly written material, based on years of working to understand digital photography, how color works, and how Affinity Photo fits into that picture. Please enjoy the book. All I ask in return is that you look it over and leave a comment. Affinity_Photo_from_Ten_Thousand_Feet.pdf
  2. Updated for Publisher 2.4 (February 2024) This free in-depth manual is filled with steps, tips, and recommendations for: Documents, Pages, Master Pages, Sections, and Baseline Grid Character and Paragraph Formatting Text Styles (paragraph and character) Text Frames, Text Flow, and Stories Images and Picture Frames Books and Chapters Cross-References, Table of Contents, and Index Notes - including Footnotes, Sidenotes, and Endnotes Fields - including Page Numbering, Running Headers, and Custom Variables Anchors and Hyperlinks Printing and Exporting Settings This manual does not cover objects, drawing, photo editing, or the other artistic features. Download: Publisher Manual Feb 26 2024.pdf Q&A Is this really free? Yes, I'm making it available free of charge. It's copyrighted to prevent others from publishing it as their own. Is there a longer manual I can purchase? No, this is it. Is there an iPad version? No, the steps and screenshots are for the macOS and Windows versions. Is there a version for Designer or Photo? No, but many of the features are the same so you should still find it useful. Why does it use a print layout if it's a PDF? It's a demonstration of how to use the features it describes to create a print book. Previous version for 2.3: Publisher Manual Nov 29 2023.pdf
  3. I have produced a pdf version of the Affinity Photo manual that you can read without starting the program. It can be interesting to put it on your phone or tablet to read when you have some time to spare. Since the file is too big to upload here, I have put it on Dropbox for you to download. It is current for the last version of Affinity Photo. Comments welcomed. Here is the link: https://dropbox.com/s/d3uxmmypdx9ruzw/Affinity%20Photo%20Manual.pdf?dl=0
  4. Hi, I'm making a PDF of a historic text and keeping the word layout, for my translation to be easy to compare with the original. Automatic hyphenation cannot do the thing, and all manual hyphenation shows as error. I have the necessary dictionaries installed, en_US.aff, en_US.dic, and hyph_en_US.dic: I have them linked from Publisher Settings, C:\ProgramData\Affinity\Common\2.0\Dictionaries. Character is set to en_US for spelling and hyphenation, typography Latin Auto/ Default (the setting does not influence the hyphenation problem). Soft hyphens do not work, word division remains marked as error. Text is linked and flows, full blue.
  5. When a manual is in .PDF form, I can simply read one page after another, till I get to the end, and know I have read the entire manual. HTML-based manuals force me to navigate a maze of links, hoping beyond hope that I have successfully found every page. Even with a navigation bar on the side, one cannot be sure that every single page is linked to in said navigation bar. Many, many HTML-based manuals end up with sub-pages that can only be found via an obscure link, buried in a paragraph somewhere. So, you are forced to click every link you see, out of fear of missing out. This makes reading a manual kind of exhausting. In a .PDF, I can annotate the document as I see fit. I can highlight important parts. I can insert any questions I may have while reading (even when away from my main computer). Then, I can go back and try to answer those questions when I am either at my main computer or when I am online. Plus, sometimes you just want to insert a question and then keep reading. With HTML-based help, you have to use a separate method to keep track of all these notes and questions. It then becomes extra tedious to keep track of which note or question is about which part of the manual. I can synchronize a .PDF manual (along with all those annotations) between different devices, simply by storing it in some cloud-based service. Yes, I can sometimes save "favorites" or "bookmarks" in an HTML-based help system, but those can never be synchronized between all my devices. So, if I want to make use of that feature, I am forced to always read said help on a single device. Without these abilities, reading HTML-based help can become extremely frustrating. Especially when said "help" glosses over most of the actual detail of how to use the program. As a former network manager, and a former technical writer, with a degree in Computer Science and Education, I can definitely tell the difference between me simply not being able to understand something and just poor documentation. I do have the tools available to convert existing HTML-based manuals to PDF. But it can be a tedious and error prone process. And the whole process must be repeated each time the HTML-based manual is updated. It is always far better to just start from the source files and use a reliable utility to produce the .PDF version of the document. Usually, the same tool that generated the HTML-based manual has a feature to generate a .PDF file as well. So there is often no real excuse for a company to neglect doing this. Sometimes it feels as if software companies rely solely on HTML-based documentation just so they never have to worry about users working from an outdated copy of the manual. But I also feel that this is a bit of a cop-out.
  6. the updater GUI tells me that there is an update available, but when i click update now it gives me an installation error without details. I use Windows. Does someone have an idea why? Or can someone tell me how to install the update manually?
  7. Hola!!. He realizado un manual en español de Affinity Designer basado en la ayuda del programa. Espero que sea de utilidad. I have made a Spanish manual of Affinity Designer based on the help of the software. I hope it helps. Greetings. Affinity_Designer_-_Manual_de_Usuario.pdf
  8. I've run into a major issue trying to learn Affinity Photo 2 and Designer 2. I want to try Publisher 2 for some upcoming projects, but I'm concerned at this point it's going to be very difficult and that I may need an alternative. Are there text, not video, guides/how-to/help manuals for these programs? When I try searching online for resources to answer specific questions, I am often shown the wrong version, program, or OS, and no, search engines don't care about quote marks generally, so searching for something in Photo 2 can get me results for Photo 1, or either version of Designer. Also, many of the reseults I get are for windows, and I'm on an iPad. I desperately want text, not video, because video takes huge chunks of time (especially compared to scaning a page) to figure out the information I need isn't even there. If I check a few results I can loose an hour before I know what happenned. I've been working with digital art programs, including those for photo editing and graphic design, for 20ish years now. I know what the feature I need is, I just don't know where to find it in these programs. I fully accept that there are going to be differnces from Adobe, and I don't need the Affinity interface to be the same as any of the other programs I've used over the years. I do need to be able to quickly skim a resource, find out where the devs put the tool I need, and contunue with my project. Do text rescources detailing where to find and how to use tools in Affinity 2 programs on iOS exist? If so, where are they? Thanks in advance for any help.
  9. Buenos días. He realizado un nuevo manual de Affinity Photo basado en la ayuda del programa v1.6.0. Espero que os sirva de ayuda. Un saludo. Affinity_Photo_-_Manual_de_Usuario.pdf
  10. I'm trying to make a 3-d pie chart on this new (to me) program. I can find zero information in your tutorials, zero information in your help files, zero information in Youtube tutorials and there is no manual. Why did I buy this program?😡 Because it's cheap and intuitive for the most part. But I also have access to Illustrator. But it's unnecessarily complicated and I don't like having to interrupt my creative flow to look up techniques on Youtube. But at least I can look something up. You're not Adobe. There is no well-established group of people offering instruction for Designer. And you don't even have a manual. So how am I going to make my 3-d pie chart? I'm going to go back to Illustrator. Not because I like it, but I have to get something done in a hurry and you're not helping. I'll keep using your program because it has a lot going for it, but when it comes to the crunch I can always rely on Illustrator for the information I need to do a job in a hurry. So. You are number two in a field of two If you could ignore this problem you could become number two in a field of one. Or you could have enough respect for the people who have put their faith in your program to support them with a well-written and thoroughly indexed manual and a free online support system that includes telephone call-backs. Your customers will feel valued and you will grow like Apple. Thank you for allowing me to vent.
  11. Affinity Online Help Hello all, we're happy to be able to offer you an online version of the in-app help! Access Designer, Photo & Publisher Help here: https://affinity.help Here are some of the additional features we're able to implement as a result of having proper browser support: Dynamic language switching: The help will determine your language and (if it's available) serve you a localised copy of the help. If you prefer to read in another language, however, you'll find a combo box at the bottom left which will enable you to change languages—and stay on the page you're currently reading. Print: Sounds simple, but with full browser support we can now implement printing of the topic pages. The print icon in the bottom left will give you a nicely formatted printout of the current topic. Share: Clicking the clipboard icon will copy the current topic's URL to your clipboard, which means you can easily point other people towards topics that may help them. Responsive: The help was responsive anyway, including off-canvas menu functionality so you could collapse the window and still read a topic, but this is taken further in this version of the help. The help is formatted nicely and usable even on a 4" iPhone SE screen. Search: we've implemented our own bespoke search for the online help which is fast and accurate. Access it via the tab system along the top left. Favourites: you can add topics to your favourites list to easily access them during future browser sessions. Simply click the + (plus) icon next to the "Favourites" tab to add the current topic. With this online version you'll be able to print out topics and view them on your tablets/phones, which are two of the most common requests when it comes to help feedback. As always, if you have any feedback or find any issues with this online version, please let us know! Hope you find it useful.
  12. Feature request. I notice with the Table tool, Publisher can sort things in ascending or descending order, but doesn't give you the option to manually click and drag rows to reorder them. This is a handy feature in Adobe InDesign that I would love to see in Publisher as well. Currently, it appears the only way to manually change the order after the text is placed is to add extra rows, then copy and paste the text into the correct order.
  13. hi there, i know there are lots of tutorials explaining AD for the ipad but there are still functions that i can not figure out because i have not found any detailed info about them, for instance the contextual options when an object is selected and you tick the move tool: About Centre? also: icons with a lock inside, or an eye, you can toggle these on and off but what is their goal? a detailed manual with all the AD functions would help but i have not found it yet, anybode else?
  14. Hi. I have made a Spanish manual of Affinity Photo based on the help of the software. I hope it helps. Greetings. Affinity Photo Spanish Manual.pdf
  15. For those who are interested, there is a further blog post describing the creation process Behind the Scenes: Creating the Affinity Photo Workbook November 27, 2017 As we released our glossy full-colour Affinity Photo Workbook last week, we thought you might like to take a look into how it was created… You can find more information about it here. Usual price is $49.99 / £37.99 (+ shipping and handling). It's available in English and German. Hope you like it!
  16. If the target of this product is for professional use there needs to be not only an automatic timed backup feature but an ability for version or revision creation.
  17. 1. On the desktop version of the app in order to draw a straight line with the brush tool you can click to start the point, then shift click and it will connect those two points. Thus drawing a straight line between those two points. I cannot for the LIFE of me figure out how to do this on the iPad???? This is a MAJOR part of my editing workflow. I just want to draw a straight line but there are no modifier keys on iPad... (BTW I hate the pen tool. PLEASE don't tell me I have to use it to draw a straight line with it and then apply a stroke.) 2. Is there a side by side list of where the tools on the desktop version have been moved to in the iPad version? i.e. The quick mask is now located under the "blah blah" on the iPad app... ?? If there is a pdf manual that would be AMAZING because I am SO lost. I can't get any work done because I can't figure out where a lot of my desktop tools have been moved. Not having hot keys/modifier keys is killing me. 3. Suggestion for the app - Put a little square somewhere in the bottom corner that acts like a modifier key (shift, control etc..) on the iPad version. Procreate has a little square you can put your finger over and it acts as a modifier key so you can sample colors with your apple pencil. It's worked seamlessly with my workflow and I love it.
  18. Hi All, For a number of months now behind the scenes we have been producing a workbook for Affinity Designer, and I'm pleased to let you know it is available from today! This is a big book - 448 pages, in hardback - and it includes fantastic projects created by some top designers, as well as a comprehensive reference to all our tools and panels, and a set of core skills tutorials. You can find more information about it here. Usual price is $49.99 / £37.99, but we are running a 20% discount for the launch making it only $39.99 / £29.99 (+ shipping and handling). It's worth pointing out that right now the book is only available in English but we do plan to do a German version which should be available towards the end of the year. Hope you like it! Thanks, Ash
  19. I bought Affinity Designer for iPad, and now I find that you refuse to publish a pdf manual for it, and you ALSO refuse to ship your hard copy manual to me even though it costs 2.5 times what the software cost, and that doesn't include shipping and handling, and to make matters even worse, it's not even a manual for Designer for iPad; it is a manual for Designer for desktop. Unbelievable. I mean, seriously, why wouldn't you want users to have a manual? How can your refusal possibly serve even your own selfish best interests? I'm going to use Designer for a few days and see if I can figure out how to do what I need to do with it, and if I can't, I will cancel my purchase. Unbelievable.
  20. Hello guys, I bought a manual from the Rheinwerk Design publishing company and I don't know if I should sell it or use it to learn the software (I use affinity Photo). Does the book help or is it useless? Can I learn the software just with YouTube Tutorials and practicing?
  21. Hi, Can anyone help me find the best way to merge three (bracketed) raw files without using the automatic hdr process. I would simply like to use my own masking process to create the result. Must I process the raw files first then load tifs into a stack? Or is there another way?
  22. Can the photo work book be purchased through the likes of Chapters or Coles here in Canada ?
  23. First: Many thanks, folks. Many great improvements here. Now, how the heck do they all work? Generally, the Affinity help system is much better than that offered by many other vendors, yet there are still things I spend ages tinkering with in order to find out how they work. This would be helped a great deal if there was a technical manual that went into detail about how everything works. Yes, early users want simple advice. But please don't forget those of us who are more experience would also like something for us that really gets into the nitty-gritty of things. There must be details specifications for functions -- could not these be used to produce manuals for us more techie folks? When I was a software engineer at HP this was how we worked, writing both Úser and Technical manuals for two very different customer audiences (likewise in Tech Support, we differentiated the techies and tried not to ask questions such as 'Have you switched it on?'' I produce the Youtube Inaffinity channel which in part explains my 'discoveries''. It would help me if I had more detail to help with this. I wouldn't mind either if I could focus more on artistic aspects of the very wonderful Affinity Photo.
  24. Please, can you release an "official" version of the online manual in PDF format??? Or any other format that I can download and read on something other than my computer when Affinity is running??? I frequently travel to places where an internet connection is unavailable (one of the reasons I use Affinity instead of the cussed subscription only program) so the live website is not always available to me. I learn programs like this by reading and studying the manual, over and over. It is my bedtime reading. I can't take my computer to bed like I can my iPad... Right now the only way I can do this is an out of date "pirated" version. This is not hard if you have all the text in hand.
