  1. Is there something wrong with my Affinity Designer 1.8.3 that I just updated? I am creating Text Frames and no longer see the option to create columns within them. I've attached a screen shot. Do you recommend a re-install? Thanks.
  2. Hi Would be really helpful to change the language per document, directly on each text frame or for a marked text. The language setting in the text style is difficult to handle when it is required to work in multiple languages. br
  3. 1. Draw a text frame with the Frame Text tool. 2. Type some text into the frame. Make it short enough not to force the line to wrap. 3. With the cursor to the right of the right-most character, press and hold the space bar to insert multiple spaces. Result: Eventually the cursor advances past the right edge of the text frame and keeps heading to the right—until you type a non-space character. Then the line wraps. Not that anyone would likely do this as part of creating a document...but it does seem anomalous. : ) (Hoping the screen-shot upload works this time.)
  4. It would extend the usefulness of styles if they could also align text vertically, do edge spacing and fill paragraph boxes. Some times it's nice to have a header with a colour blocked background. I'm not sure if this is standard breaking or not practical but if feels like it could be a great addition to the document wide formatting. Thanks.
  5. Hello! I’d love to see an option to define the first baseline in a text frame – especially as "line height". The default seems to be some ascent height, which however depends on the font selected. So having two text frames next to each other with similar content (the same sequence of line heights) and just the font of the first line being different, it is very difficult to synchronize the baselines of the two text frames. The baseline grid is no good solution, as (if you have varying line heights) you have to disable it for all subsequent paragraphs, and further it is applied to not just the first line, but all lines of the first paragraph. Another "solution" for the described scenario would be to have an empty 1pt first line. Yet I would rather call both ways workarounds, not solutions. I’m very much used to this from InDesign: Looking forward to your thoughts! ––– EDIT: Summary of our discussion (thanks, Old Bruce!) ––– A viable solution for the scenarios I can think of seems to be a baseline grid based on a common denominator of the used font sizes (granted that there be one, which however contributes to good design anyway). (Also see the second screenshot in this post: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/106014-define-first-baseline-in-text-frame/&tab=comments#comment-572592) Still my feature request remains, as it would be a quicker approach in many cases.
  6. Hi. I have done some searching but I have not found an answer to the following question: How does one set "top align" as the default for a text frame, instead of "justify vertically"? I am currently working on my first project in Affinity Publisher and my text frames are set by default to vertical justification, which sometimes creates a frightening scene when adding text! My search for a field or setting to make top alignment the default has so far proved useless, so I must remember to set it for each frame, even frames of flow text. Thanks.
  7. Hello, when I double click the top or bottom of a text frame to resize it, Publisher continues to crash. Now that I've discovered what causes the crash, Publisher/that file wont open without crashing. Also, it crashes the new beta version too. I experienced this same problem during the original beta - apparently it hasn't been fixed? I would prefer not to have to redo all the work I've put into this so far. Please help! 2256 KBR Typesetting.afpub
  8. Apologies for the title of the thread, I tried to be succinct. Double-clicking the bottom-centre adjustment handle of a text frame shrinks the frame to the size of the visible text by adjusting the height while keeping the top of the frame where it is. This is a documented function. Double-clicking the top-centre adjustment handle does similar but keeps the bottom of the frame where it is. As far as I can tell, this is an undocumented function. That’s fine, but, as part of a discussion here https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/100879-resize-text-frame-to-fit-copy-within/ I found that double-clicking the left-centre or right-centre adjustment handle of a text frame sometimes resizes the width of the frame. However, I couldn’t figure out what the resize criteria was. In other words, I don’t know how Publisher calculates the new frame width. See my GIF in the linked thread for an example of each. Does anyone know how the new frame width is calculated?
  9. Hi, I came across the following problem on the Windows version of publisher: when resizing a text frame, the text within doesn't reflow nicely, but gets overlapped in a pretty ugly way. I hope this problem will be fixed by the upcoming updates, because Publisher is a great piece o software that I am starting to enjoy way more than InDesign. sXo502PeRs240schcddFVA.MOV
  10. I previously reported in one of the Betas that the Pin to Text function didn't work on pages in Text frames that had been created in Master Pages. https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/95209-pin-to-text-bug/ It looks as if the Pin to Text function is now completely broken because I can't get it to work at all. Select the function then try to move the marker to a new location as in the screen capture in my previous post and and it won't move. It doesn't make any difference this time around whether the image and text are placed in a new frame in a page or in one created in a master page. I've edited this because after testing a few times there is a bit of an anomaly. The problem has returned exactly as previously reported (and fixed in one of the betas). The failure to work on a new Text frame created in a normal page seems to occur intermittently. I'm not sure if it's caused by having another document on a tab in Afpub at the same time, if that document having been created in an earlier version makes a difference or if it is another factor in play.
  11. Hello world, My last week's Bug is not yet answered upon, today I stumbled accross an even weirder behaviour which I captured on Video. AP 1.7.1 duplicated a large chunk of text at the very bottomn of my text frames and reflows it into the next frame if I create one. This is reproducible on frames where it appears, and no changing the text / editing / re-formatting that i do removes this problem. The original and duplicated text are in symc, If I change it it changes in both frames … Please help – text management should be more relilable in an Publisher … Thanks, --Thomas Bildschirmvideo aufnehmen 2019-08-15 um 18.18.26.mov
  12. Is it possible to create a multi-line border for a text frame?
  13. I am very new to this, having previously used Microsoft Office Publisher to desk-top edit our parish magazine - and now switched to Affinity Publisher. I know that I should be able to get the text and frame to scale together if I use the outlying handle on the bottom right corner, but it does not seem to work - text overflows (see image). Could it be something to do with the formatting of the text? Surely it should work whatever the format? I can start with all text inside the box, but when I try to scale it using the "spare" handle, it just doesn't work as I've seen it do in the tutorial. Any suggestions please??
  14. In Affinity Publisher v1.7.1, cannot remove or change rectangle fill after converting to text frame — there is no UI to do this, and the fill is permanent. Have to delete and recreate the work. Steps: 1) Select rectangle tool and draw a rectangle, 2) In the colour palette, set a noticeable fill colour, 3) Choose Layer > Convert to Text Frame, 4) adjust the same controls that were used in step 2 to choose a fill colour. Result: the fill colour of the box no longer changes (the newly selected colour is applied to text added). 30mins search and experimentation did not yield any place in the UI that would allow the rectangle fill to be changed (if its present but well hidden, then this is also a UI bug). Expected: either a) rectangle fill is removed when converted to text frame, or b) all colour selection palettes allow target for change within text frame to be selected, out of text (selection) or frame itself. (Presumed same for all types of shape, and for stroke as well.)
  15. My text in a text frame overwrites itself. It seems that the leading has disappeared. Where and how can I fix that?
  16. I have an image surrounded by a text in a text frame. When I set some padding in the "Distance from text" part of the Text Wrap window, the text is not immediately shifted away from the image, but as soon as the value of the padding is increased enough, it jumps line by line. This is not necessarily what I would like to achieve. Is it possible to set the padding more precisely, for example by 1mm?
  17. I'm having a problem with text frames. Say I have ONE text box that already exists that I want to have a border around it (it now has none). So I select that box and open the Text Frame tool and set the stroke to 1 point, black, and also some space between the border and the text. Works great. BUT, from that point on any new text box I create has these characteristics, instead of what I want - the default box (no borders, etc). With PagePlus, you could modify the characteristics of an INDIVIDUAL text frame and it had no impact on the default settings. Surely there is a way in AP? It is really cumbersome to reset a tools characteristics EVERY time I make a change to one individual item of that type (it seems to be true with other tools too). I guess I would call this "persistence" and would like to stop it, if possible. I can find no item for it in preferences, unfortunately. I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I cannot find it by searching.
  18. Hi All, I am new to Affinity range. In PagePlus I had a text frame and I click on "Justify Paragraph". That kind of makes the text even within the text frame. In Affinity Publisher I see I have more choices, but experimenting I could find similar result. Did I miss something? Or how do I set this up and save as a favourite? Thanks in advance
  19. I have a large document. I was trying to find a way to add an accented "e" to a word so I used the Text/Show Special Characters menu choice. Wrong! At that point all text objects in the entire document were highlighted with rectangles around them. Apparently, even picture frames are also highlighted. Undo didn't work. I went back to the same "Text/Show Special Characters" menu and unchecked that. I can't get rid of the rectangles now. "Select All" doesn't change anything as all objects are selected. "Deselect" is greyed out and Command-D does not function in this case, and the "Text/Show Special Characters" is not checked. Note that the purpose of "Show Special Characters" turned itself off (not showing paragraph markers, etc.), but the highlighted rectangles are still present. Any ideas? Is this a bug or there some way to "deselect" everything? Thanks.
  20. Hey! I have encountered a problem with shapes that became text frames. Steps: I draw a shape, in my case a circle. I color and adjust the circle's fill and stroke. I use the text frame tool to make it into a text frame. From this point on I can only access the font color. The circle's color and stroke is not editable anymore. I have attached a sample file too. Is this a normal behavior? All the best, Chris text.afdesign
  21. I use a lot of text captions next to photos. These look much better when centered on the photo's frame (left, right, bottom, top). Also using centre for the alignment in the text. Sometimes, the text frame needs to be narrowed/widened in order for the text flow to look better (so, for example, you do not end up with a single word on the last line of the caption). I struggle to manually keep the text frame centered while narrowing/widening the text frame. It would be very helpful to have a "modifier" key that will freeze the center of the text frame and as you narrow/widen one side, the other side would also narrow - keeping the text frame centered on another object. This seems to me similar to locking the aspect ratio on picture frames by using the Shift key as you drag a frame handle. This would also apply to making the text frame taller or shorter for the same reasoning. This would save a huge amount of time in that 1.) the frame needs only to be narrowed, and 2. extra time is now spent also re-centering the frame since, now, only one side moves and it ends up non-centered. If there is such a method to do this, it escapes me at this time. Thanks.
  22. I can't find anything in the Help about this but it seems like a reasonable thing to want to do. It would be nice to be able to easily convert an artistic text layer to a text frame so I can take advantage of the extra functionality without having to manually create new text frames and copying the text over. Is there any way of doing this easily? On example where this would be useful is if you had a page originally created in Designer - which doesn't have text frames - that you brought over to Publisher for further editing.
  23. Hello there! I am currently trying to resize an existing artboard to an exact value using the transform panel, however I can't get the textframes to scale with the artboard, rather than just changing the frame size. When I use the "scale handle" and "manually" resize the artboard, it works just fine. How would I go about doing it with the transform panel? I have this question also over on stackexchange: https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/120555/affinity-designer-how-do-i-make-textframes-scale-with-the-artboard-if-i-scale-b Also attached you should find a gif demonstrating the issue I am facing.
  24. Publishing is new to me. I can't believe that I can't get started! Page 1, text frame, style heading 1, start typing - NOTHING. I'm not using layers that I am aware of. I know this is not right! Put me on the right start path PLEASE! Humbly thankful. Jeri
  25. I just started using Affinity Publisher Beta so forgive my ignorance. When I add a text frame, I cannot find where I can make the background of the frame transparent. The background of the frame has a brown color. Thanks in advance.
