  1. Okay, cancel that! It didn't work to change the original master page, but it did work to 'edit linked' on one of the pages. Leaving post up in case it's useful.
  2. I should say the change to margin I applied to "all spreads", which did apply, but the master page text box change didn't
  3. Hi folks. I have a master page with 2 text boxes on it in a double column layout. I have 4 'sub-masters' based on this master, and about 40 pages using it. I just changed my upper margin and resized the textboxes to match. But the change didn't carry through anywhere the master is used? I have never made changes in the pages that use the master with master detached - I have only filled them with text. What are the rules for whether master changes propagate? I can't share the file but I can try to make a 'mockup' version if that's helpful. Thanks!
  4. Hi folks, Publisher v1.10.6.1665 I have a facing pages master page that has two text frames for double column text, with flow between the 4 boxes of the spread. When I new pages, the flow between the two frames works correctly in those new pages, as does my manual flowing between pages. See the 'Before' image. However, if I add a single (or odd number) of new pages before any of these, the flowing gets completely messed up, with the right hand column now flowing into the left hand column, as shown in 'After' image attached. Am I doing something wrong in the setup of the flow? Or is this a bug? Or an unavoidable 'feature' of the way flow is handled? Thanks Before After
  5. @MikeTO Yeah, the manual way is always there... I just have traumatic memories of spending multiple hours manually moving 160 pages worth of text boxes for my last book when I needed to change margins, having misunderstood master pages early in the project 😱. @GarryP, That's exactly it! I'd like to do this with as much 'master page' linked properties preserved as possible. Or at least I'm seeing if others have ideas that preserve different master page links than mine! Not yet sure what I may encounter as I write this book... @thomaso I wasn't aware of the 'No break' feature or the 'Pinning' window - both may be useful, thanks. Though unfortunately I don't see how to get the text flow correct as per GarryP's diagram.
  6. Hi folks, I have a problem, I've found a solution while experimenting but wondering if there's a better one. I'm using Affinity Publisher v1. Trying to create a set of master pages for an upcoming book. The text will be in double columns, and I'd like the textboxes to be in the master page in case of edits to margins, layout etc. However, one thing I'd like to do is have minor chapters break the text in BOTH columns, i.e. the previous minor chapter left col text would get halfway down the page or wherever, wrap back to the right col top. Then the minor chapter heading spanning both columns, and the next minor chapter text start below it, reach the bottom of the page, then wrap to the right column. The chapter heading would want to be anywhere down the page, given its y will depend on how much leftover text there is from the previous chapter. You can't do this by having 2 sets of text frames in the master and resizing the text frames unlinked in the instance, as this permanently detatches all transforms from the master, so changes to margin etc. would need to be done manually. I've found two methods for preserving with disadvantages and advantages of each. Are there other better ways, or tricks I've missed? Method 1: Use text frame settings to set columns. Set up a master page just for these minor chapter breaks. Using a text frame with double columns rather than a separate frame for each column, create two overlapping copies of the main text frame, one for the top previous chapter, one for the bottom next chapter. Maybe resize the top to not go all down the page and the bottom to start some % down the page for easier selecting. For each, select 'Balance text in columns' in the Text Frame window. Now in the instance of the master page for a new minor chapter break, flow the end of the last chapter into the top text box and it will balance across the two columns automatically Add in the chapter heading text box across both columns manually (perhaps using some system to get the spacing right). Select the bottom text box and detatch from the master with Ctrl+Shift+D. Make the next chapter skip down to below the heading by using Text Frame --> Inset --> Top. When aligned correctly, finish editing master and you're done. The advantage of this method is the nice 'Balance text in columns' feature (and fewer text boxes = simpler life?). This method preserves linking transformation changes to the text box master, but permanently detatches the text frame settings for that text box, meaning no changes to column layout or anything else can be made. If general text frame changes do need to be made, re-applying the master then re-doing steps 4 & 5 would seem the solution. Method 2: Use separate text frames for each column. Set up as in steps 1 and 2 of Method 1, just with two flowed frames per set of columns. Now in the instance of the master page, flow in your text for the previous chapter, then select the top set of two text boxes. Detatch from the master. Use Text Frame --> Inset --> Bottom and increase this until left column text is pushed into the right column, and the columns look even. Manually add in your chapter heading text box across the columns below the top text. Now use Text Frame --> Inset --> Top and increase until this is nicely spaced below your chapter heading. Finish editing master, done. This method also permanently unlinks text frame properties. But the advantage of method 2 over method 1 is that you're able to resize the margin between columns linked with the master just by resizing or moving the column text frames. Though if you actually do change anything in the master, even more manual work will be required on these pages to get everything to line up correctly again 😅. Thoughts and suggestions please. I'm hoping someone will tell me I'm being an idiot and there's a simpler, better way to achieve what I'm aiming for. Thanks!
  7. Hi there, By default in Affinity Publisher on windows the keybindings for 'set global opacity' are set to the number keys 0-9. I've never used the global opacity - but sometimes unintentionally I've caught a number key by mistake unknowingly. This is massively dangerous. If I have ever while working in a document hit a number key without realising it while something is selected, not only will that thing have its opacity changed which I don't want, if text is selected this will cause Publisher to raster that text on export for my projects. But, the keybindings don't seem possible to change. Apart from this critical issue, I'd love to be able to bind 0-9 to something useful to me! The above flaw very nearly caused a horrible printing issue in the main print run of my self-published book - I know to look out for it now and I go manually from page to page after every export checking for rasterised text, in a 160+ page book. Am I missing something? Thanks!
  8. Hi Jon, It happens whenever I move a picture frame with an image loaded into it - doesn't seem to happen if the picture frames are empty. From what I've seen it happens more often if I move them via the keyboard arrow keys. I've not checked other documents, but it's happened dozens of times with this one. I don't know if it's relevant, but I've been working on this document for around 5 months so it was created in a much older version of Publisher. Resizing picture frames is fine, as seems to be movign the image within the frame.
  9. Happened a third time, again after translating picture frames containing images
  10. Hi there, I've twice now gotten a persistent 'save failed' error and had to revert to the last time I saved. I believe both times it happened after translating picture frames containing images. Let me know what else you need to know! Thanks
  11. Never mind, the new version released 40 mins ago fixes it 😅 good timing!
  12. I've had the same issue as other posters, with Affinity Publisher hanging on opening a 482kb file, in my case with no linked media. When I open the file, the last pages I had selected show with the text blurred, and the interface seems to resize to go off the edge of the screen (bottom status bar and close buttons no longer visible.) No button clicks or keyboard strokes register. I've tried making a new file and using 'Add pages from file' and it does recover the info, but I'm paranoid I'm missing document settings and info that I set many months ago. I'm against a tight deadline and this is really not helping! Thanks
  13. Hah I'd hoped it was that simple! Thanks for saving my bacon, should I delete this topic given the lack of bug?
  14. Hi, I'm working to a tight deadline to produce a product brochure, but the hyperlinks to website pages don't work. No sign in the exported pdf that they are hyperlinks. Weirdly, typing www.test.com as normal text produces a hyperlink to test.com, but no actual 'Interactive' hyperlinks work. Version 1.9.2.1035 of Affinity Publisher. How can I fix this?
