  1. I'm a bit rusty with any design app, and I've never gotten completely up to speed with Designer. I'm trying to do something which I think is fairly simple, but I don't seem to be able to get it right. Simply, I have two shapes, and I want one to cut out of the other. Right now I have a group of shapes and I put it on top of the shape I want it to cut from, and I say to mask below, and it makes the bottom shape into the shape of the group above. What I want is in fact the bottom shape minus the group above (so it is transparent where the group was). How do I do this? Thank you.
  2. Hi, The linked resources are a great feature in Affinity, but there is any way how I can use that linked resource as a mask for another layer/group? Or link that B&W image in my file (somewhere), and then link(as layer linking) its luminosity to another layer - as a mask or something? I am just trying to move my render composition workflow to Affinity, and linked resources are great, but I have rendered alpha masks and z-depth channels. And would be nice to have them linked and working. Thanks in advance of any suggestion, cheers!
  3. I created a custom brush using New Brush from Selection. It's fine if i paint on a regular pixel layer but if I use it on a mask, it paints as a block with the shape inside, almost like it's been inverted. Steps I used to create the brush: Create a new pixel layer Create an outline with the freehand lasso Fill selection with black Brush Panel > New Brush from Selection (both with an active selection and without) Edited brush dynamics (also tried without editing) AP: 1.9.3 Mac:
  4. How do I use a pixel layer containing a greyscale image as a layer mask so that white pixels show the current layer and black pixels hide the current layer, and grey shades in between represent partial transparancy? In the screenshot (attached) I want to use the black and white picture of the skull to mask the green square so that I end up with a green skull where the white is, and the black are would be transparent. any grey pixels would be different levels of transparancy. I really need step by step instructions as I just don't understand how to do this in AP as I am so used to doi
  5. I was working with Adjustment Layer masks, and wanted to see before and after changes. I tried different key and mouse combos and right-clicking on the mask thumbnail, and no options to disable the mask for the Adjustment Layer, or to delete it. Could the ability to disable (or even delete) the layer mask be added. Seems pretty useful, since very frequently we like to contrast before and after changes are made. I know a child/clipped layer mask could be added, which, being a separate layer, can be turned off and on to see before and after changes. But it seems redundant to child/clip a la
  6. Working with Masks is greater than in any other application I have worked with so far, the ease of having child layers and being able to stack a mask over the other truly is amazing. However... One thing that I have found disorienting is that when I use the colour picker tool, rather than picking a value of black an white from the mask that I am working on, Afphoto decides to pick a colour from the Parent Layer (Even when the Source is set to "Current Layer" while having the mask selected). Even though working a mask will only paint with the luminosity value of the sample taken,
  7. Today I wanted to work on a new Image, where I use severe mask, but what I try to get working with a mask using the paintbrush its not working. See the screen movie. photo.exe_2021_04.09_-_13_01_32_02.mp4
  8. Is there a possibility to unlink a mask from the pixel layer? In Photoshop it's a simple click on the chain between pixel layer and mask. Can this somehow done also in AP? I know, I easily can place the Buzzard layer above the clouds and for that get rid of the mask on the cloud layer. But what, if that's not possible and an unlinking pixel and mask is needed? Appreciate any help and hints. How_to_Unlink_Mask_from_Layer.mov
  9. Hey there! So as far as I can tell this still isn't possible in Affinity Photo. I want to be able to clip a layer to a group. See attached image. Has this been added and I just missed it? Basically every psd I've made uses this feature, so as well as not being able to import my psds because of this, I can't really use affinity photo since this technique is a huge part of my workflow. Any word on the possibility of adding this? Would love to make the switch from photoshop! Thanks for listening! - Neil
  10. What's the difference between Mask Layer and another one(the one with the crop icon) technically in this case? The another one can be a pixel layer. In that case, they seems to be no difference each other. I've been using them without knowing the difference whole time. But I like to know the difference to explain the layer system to other users.
  11. How can i use the undo brush non destructively ? Is it somehow possible with masks? What i want is a layer/masklayer i can blend in and out only with the changes of the undo brush.
  12. When using my self-created brushes on mask layers, each intensity brush image dab (or whatever the proper technical term is) is surrounded by a square shape. The attached image is an example of my problem. This does not occur with any of the default intensity (I assume) brushes that came with the application, only custom/downloaded brushes. I followed the instructions for custom brush creation found in the help files. Then I followed all of the recommendations I discovered here in the forums and on YouTube: square image, PNG file type, 300dpi, both black on white and transparent ba
  13. Hello, Where am I going wrong, please? I want to cut out the policeman’s cap. 1 I crop the image so I can see just the cap. 2 I cut out using the pen tool 3 I click mask 4 I Cmd-C and Cmd-V into a new Affinity Photo file. See RBhBwyuhb6K3E2Y1AnDVaIsa9z4hkk The issue I have is that this takes over the cropped elements of the file. Help appreciated! Will

  15. When I create a mask, it opens its layer tree automatically in 1.9. in 1.8, it wasn't so. Steps to reproduce: Quick Mask > click Layer Mask button of the Layer Panel.
  16. This is a completely non-destructive mask, which is a group of many layers. You can use many raster and vector layers/objects in one mask. And of course, you can edit them! Nondestructive_Mask.afphoto Nondestructive_Mask_Test.afphoto Nondestructive_Mask.afassets How to use Place your layers between the Procedural Texture and the Fill Layer. 17. I am running 1.9.1.979 on Windows 10. I am unable to paint black on any mask, adjustments or pixels; painting white is fine on a mask or an inverted mask. Painting black has no effect. mask_problem.afphoto
  18. When the monochromatic iconography selection is ON the adjustment layer mask have a black/white circle overlay on them rather than being totally white or black (inverted). This circular icon blocks the users ability to see the strokes made by painting with the black or white (when inverted) brush. When the monochromatic iconography is OFF it shows the mask fully and any adjustments made by painting with the black or white (when inverted) brush is clearly shown. Attached is a screen shot of the Layers panel with the monochromatic iconography in the ON position. The highlighted Levels
  19. You might want to use a pixel layer as mask layer, but still be able to edit this layer and see the impact of your edits live. This is easily possible: Start with at least a background layer and a second pixel layer intended for masking add the live procedural text filter with this formula A=R, R=1, G=1, B=1 (or download preset "grey to alpha" below) Clip this live filter to the pixel layer to be used for masking Clip "pixel mask layer to be used for marking" to the background layer where you want to use it. The procedural text filter will become invisible in the l
  20. Hey guys, im new to affinity photo and graphic design in general. So ive made a pentool curve, the i "masked to below" to an image below. Then i want to create a hole in that mask so more parts of the image i masked is shown. Is that possible? also if it is, how do i do it on texts? Thanks
  21. I tried the mask layer linking that @carl123 demonstrated. The linking of masks worked fine for me. I then tried editing the linked-from-mask, and the linked-to-mask, both masks reflected edits of either. But while the actual layers updated, the thumbnails were updated going one way but not the other. See circle on unsharp-mask mask but not on levels mask. (macOS 11.2)
  22. I have a B&W pixel layer that I have converted to a mask layer and put inside a live adjustment layer. I decided that I want to boost the contrast of the mask after I had put it into the live adjustment layer. How do I do that? Preferably non-destructively such as adding the Levels adjustment to the mask for more control. If not possible I'm still happy with a destructive method too. In Photoshop I just ALT+CLICK on the mask to make it active and then CTRL+L to adjust the Levels of the mask.
  23. So I've been trying to work with masks and the "Hold ALT" colour picker... it's BAD. When I hold down ALT with the intention to pick a value FROM THE MASK to apply it somewhere else in it, the tool simply decides to pick the GLOBAL value of the document instead, which makes working with masks a complete pain as I want to pick the value from the actual mask to control the ALPHA value for that mask alone. Switching to the Isolated view of the mask makes NO difference at all, it still picks the value of the Parent Layer. The only exception to this problem is if you select the Colour Pic
  24. I suppose you already have a plan to improve this compatibility but I post this just in case. Raster layer mask of fill layer created in Photoshop become transparency but mask in Affinity. Mask should be preserved as mask if possible like on pixel layers.
  25. Using the Dodge and burn on a mask layer is handy when using to affect only shadows, midtones or highlights. Eg. Dodging a lighter sky through a dark tree. Tx
