  1. I recently bought Photo – almost seemed rude not to at the discounted price – and I’m amazed/daunted at the amount of tools that are in there. It will probably take me a very long time just to get under the surface of what’s possible but I thought I’d give myself a little challenge. I wanted to see if I could do some basic editing and decided to try and de-freckle a photo. I’ve attached the original and result side by side. I didn’t want to totally expunge every single ‘blemish’ and leave the young lady looking like a shop dummy so I tried to leave her skin as I think it could be without the freckles while still having some of the other things that skin naturally has. It’s not perfect by any means but I was very pleased with what I could do in around an hour with just the Blemish Removal Tool (and Undo). I haven’t posted this as any kind of “Look at this great thing I’ve done”, rather I’ve posted it in the hope that people thinking about buying Photo might ask themselves: “If this bloke can do this with no training or artistic talent, just think what could be possible if I got my hands on this.” Note: I have absolutely nothing against freckles. I just chose the photo as it looked like a difficult one to experiment on, which, in the end, it wasn’t because of the tools in Photo.
  2. Hi all, I'm trying to figure out how to add new parameters to the Live Procedural Texture but I can't get my head around it. Basically I would like to use the Smoothed bars preset and add a rotation parameter and a way to control the thickness of the black bars and white bars independently, is this possible? Thanks in advance, Juan
  3. Hi Affinity, As a member of the Affinity converted with Designer and Publisher, I have used Affinity software for my digital agency and there are presentations of mine in the exec offices of some global automakers. This work used to be done with InDesign but I switched over to Designer two years ago and used multipage artboards to work on my projects. When Publisher Beta came out I was on cloud nine, and then when StudioLink came out I really needed psychotherapy to cure my OCD with Publisher. Such an amazing, groundbreaking workflow. I also took a very deep dive on Photo, the latest store version and also the beta. I have a collection of thousands of Photoshop files and many of them opened up flawlessly. I also love the refined UI. And now rotating brushes are amazing! I seriously don’t know why Photoshop hasn’t done that yet, but consider that it took them many years to enable CMD-Z. You guys had live preview first but they soon adopted that, so it is clear they are watching what you are doing. I would like to come over 100% to Affinity but I have several issues that prevent me from doing so. Also, I do realize that this is a monumental task - Photoshop really is Adobe’s flagship, more so than any of their products. It was easy to switch over to Designer from Illustrator, really easy even with features missing (perspective warp please! - although doing that in StudioLink). Right now I am adept enough at Photo as and use it within a StudioLink context but not standalone and here’s what’s preventing me: Smart Objects. Before I begin, I know Adobe is never going to let you in on Smart Objects. PSD documents that include them will open up with these layers rasterized. But let’s consider that your embedded documents are pretty much there. I can add a Photo or Designer file to Photo or Designer or Publisher and I can edit the document just as I would a smart object, and see live updating on the master document - which is ahead of Photoshop in that regard. Also if it’s a Designer file in Photo I can edit in Designer without leaving Publisher or Photo.) In Photoshop you can only edit a vector with Illustrator). Then with the embedded document I can add a few live filters such as Distort>Perspective - which is a favorite in working in a mockup scenario. As a live filter I can go back and change the settings. I can also add some live blurs and a few other things. Sadly, the other Distort live filters don’t work as they have no effect on the embedded object. If you apply a non-live filter then the embedded document rasterizes, and then this gets destructive especially when placing a vector in a Photo document. I don’t mind converting my Photoshop PSB files (smart object files) to PSD then placing as embedded documents. This way I can have my entire core design and logo files standardized as Affinity vector and raster files, but the inability to do pinching and liquifying and other types of warping and shading stops me from doing this. Also there is no way to take a group of layers in Photo and convert easily to an embedded document. I really love how this works in Photoshop. It’s essential to my work, and this is the main thing keeps me on Photoshop. Hopefully Affinity can continue development here. Brushes. While I was praising brushes in Photo there is one simply itsy bitsy thing that is absolutely essential to my work. I need the brushes labeled with their actual names, as they are done in Photoshop. Photoshop has brush flyout panels - if you extend the panels. I have over two thousand brushes and it’s just too difficult to know what’s what in Photo. Even if there are groups, I can’t tell what the individual brushes are if there are two many. I can hover over the brush and then see if I’ve selected the correct one - this works well if you have a few brushes but not if you have so so many. LUTs. I love the live presets on LUTs. But honestly it is a chore to import them as presets. Also it takes too long to load the adjust layer presets. Photoshop allows you to add all the LUT files to the programs preset folder. Restart photoshop and they are all there. Pattern fills. Oh pattern fills. I keep reading in the forum that this is a badly needed feature and so I am throwing myself into this group. Yes I can work around this and have done so… but why? It’s so easy in Photoshop and I have a library of so many .pat files that I would love to use in Photo, just as I have converted my brushes, color files (with online converters) and gradients. Blend Options. I love your layer blend options UI - really easier to use than Photoshop. But shouldn’t it be part of Layer Effects? I want to add color fills for instance and select the blend options right then and there, so I can see what I’m doing as I can in Photoshop. Feathered masks. If I want to feather a mask in Photoshop I simply go to the mask properties and then adjust the feathering. In Photo I can’t feather a mask that’s been applied to an adjustment effect directly. I have to move the mask to a layer above, then apply a live filter, and then move the mask and its filter under the adjustment effect. I have to do these things all the time and this seems oddly cumbersome.
  4. I was attempting to respond to this post from @RomanNYC trying to apply both vibrance (at -100%) and saturation (100%) to an image. I loaded one of my own images (a jpg) and clicked on Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Vibrance and I got a box with a couple of sliders allowing me to adjust each of these two properties. I downloaded @RomanNYC's image (a png) and then tried to do the same with this image. Photo added a new Adjustment Layer, but no slider box appeared. I have tried double-clicking on the adjustment layer to no avail. As far as I can see, both images are 8-bit sRGB. What gives? John
  5. Hey everyone! Please consider including saving and loading the studio layout to and from file (windows, toolbar content, tools position and content) for Designer, Photo and Publisher. This would speed up things when - using the software on multiple Macs - having the layout set back by an update (e.g. 1.7) - going from a beta version to the store version It took me about 45 minutes to setup the UI for Affinity Publisher, including Designer and Photo persona, on two Macs. Also, I think the Designer and Photo personas of Publisher should read the UI layout of Designer and Photo. Best wishes, Shu
  6. Changes in 1.7.0 since 1.6.5 The changes in Affinity Photo for Windows 1.7.0 over the last Affinity Photo patch 1.6.5 (1.6.5 PK) are as follows: EDR Added support for EDR displays to Photo. When editing a 32-bit document. Brushes Photo 1.7 introduces a new “sub-brush” mechanism, developed in conjunction with Paolo Limoncelli (DAUB® Brushes). This exciting feature allows any brush to have a list of other brushes attached which will draw at the same time. Each sub-brush has a fully separate and customisable set of dynamics. You can control when the sub-brushes are drawn and how they blend with the main brush. The brush engine in Photo has been improved. Symmetry (up to 32-way) is now supported - including on-canvas controls and optional mirroring. Wet edges and accumulation are now available on colour brushes and brushes with HSL variance. Brushes with multiple nozzle textures have always chosen the nozzle at random. In 1.7, the nozzle choice has a dynamic controller and ramp for greater control. All brush tools now support left and right arrow keys for rotation - a common feature request. Fixed ABR brush import (would ignore "random" controllers). RAW The RAW processing engine in Photo has been rewritten - producing better results and improved performance. RAW files now load much more quickly. Reimplemented support for XTrans sensors. The denoise algorithm has been rewritten. It produces better results and takes advantage of the new GPU architecture. Hot pixel removal is now automatically performed by the Serif Labs engine. Profiled lens correction are more stable, apply more quickly, and can be toggled in the Develop UI. The histogram in the Develop persona is now presented in the output colour space - as opposed to always being linear. Develop now respects the output profile when previewing. Show which autofocus rectangles were in focus and which were selected by the camera (yellow, green respectively). A large number of new cameras are supported for RAW development (we will provide a list of the new supported cameras as soon as possible!). Filters New “Procedural Texture” filter with advanced presets support. New “Voronoi” filter. Denoise, Clarity and Shadows / Highlights filters have been rewritten (using technology from the Develop Persona). More filters are now available as Live Filters - including the new Procedural Texture filter. Live filters have been rewritten to improve performance - especially when multiple filters are used in a document. Improved Polar to Rectangular and Rectangular to Polar filters. Added round dot type to the halftone filter. New “Lens Correction” filter - apply lens correction from the built-in lens database. Bilateral blur accuracy improvements. Adjustments The HSL adjustment layer has been rewritten. It now supports custom hue ranges, a new algorithm, new UI and picker controls. The Levels adjustment layer now supports output levels - a common feature request. The White Balance adjustment layer has been rewritten. The Selective Colour adjustment layer has been rewritten. PSD import / export of adjustments has been improved. The Vibrance adjustment layer has been rewritten. The Recolour adjustment layer has gained a lightness slider. Layers Layers Panel - added option for transparent background for thumbnails. Layers Panel - added multiple thumbnail size options. Layers Panel- added ability to tag layers with a colour - including PSD round-trip. Allow adding an empty group from the Layer menu. New “Duplicate Selection” item in Layer menu (old behaviour). Duplicate now duplicate the whole layer ignoring pixel selection. Alt / Option is now used to make a pixel selection from layer luminance. You can now also hold shift to add the result to the current selection. Hide / Show / Show All Layers options in layers menu. Ability to either rasterise or rasterise and trim a layer. Previously recorded macros will trim. Selections Significant improvements to selection refinement. When using selection tools with no pixel selection, default to New / Add as appropriate. Added “Alpha Similarity” to Select Sampled Colour tool. Tools Grouped tool shortcuts now default to needing the shift key held to cycle (option in preferences). The Crop tool has been rewritten - it now supports resolution changes, absolute pixel size and has a much improved preset mechanism. The Sponge Brush tool now gives more correct / pleasant results. Allow brush rotate / size key changes while dragging. Added a “Reveal Canvas” checkbox to the crop tool - defaults to off. Added new “Transform object separately” mode into Move tool. A general tools overhaul has been performed - providing editing of grids, guides, page origin, across multiple tools (not just in the Move tool) Patch tool now supports arrow keys for rotate / scale. All brush tools can now be axis constrained once brush has started - not just the pixel tool. History “Alternate futures” for document history have been added. Traditionally, if you roll back the undo history then do something else all your changes after that point are lost. Photo will now display a small branch icon in the history tab when you do this. Pressing that button will cycle between all the different “futures” after that history entry - meaning you will never lose work you have done. The History page now has an “advanced” mode - which shows thumbnails and time info. I/O HEIF images can now be loaded directly into Photo. If they contain a depth map, this will also be loaded as a second layer. Because depth maps are typically lower resolution than the main image, optional “smart” upsampling will be performed. TIFF export now has user selectable compression method. Added support for 12bit TIFF files. Introduced new metadata mining - completely rewritten to improve performance, flexibility and correctness. Metadata is now dynamically synchronised with your document - so if you resize then export, the values will be correct. Added Focal Length to metadata summary view. Added a button in general preferences to open a folder from which Photo will read LensFun-style XML files - if users wish to add / experiment with their own lens profiles. Support 16bit CMYK TIFF import. General New ability to control how macros are scaled / aligned when playing back. Added an “Assets” panel to Photo. New cube setup mode for grids. Add “Fill with Primary / Secondary” to the Edit menu for fast access. The batch process dialog now fully supports expressions for height and width - available constants are “w”, “h” and “dpi”. “Lock guides” added to menus. Support for drag dropping .afstyles into Photo. Support for drag dropping .afpalette into Photo. Photo now supports custom document presets - a popular feature request. A new blend mode - Linear Burn - has been added. New “Move inside / outside” commands have been added - useful for quick operations on clipping masks etc. The Hard Mix blend mode has been improved. New provider options have been added to the stock panel - support for Unsplash, Pexels and Pixabay. All of these providers offer full-resolution stock imagery which is free to use. Numerous text improvements have been made - including new features. Significant stability improvements when working on non-local files (network shares, USB drives, etc.). Significant PDF import / export improvements and fixes. Huge macro and batch processing improvements. New welcome screen layout and all new samples. Numerous other bug fixes - too many to list!? 7. Hi all, I’m just curious more than anything, ive always had an issue with batch processing. All I use it for is to take my AFPhoto files and batch convert them to JPEGS. I find that no matter the size of the job my iMac crashes. Even if it’s five images my Mac full on freezes and eventually shuts down and restarts. I don’t get a kernel panic in the logs but it’s clearly what’s happening. Does anyone else find this happens or have any other ideas so that I can convert with out having to do them one by one.

  9. Is there a way to convert a Pen Tool path you make into a selection. There is a selection from layer I can do, but I would like to just convert the path into a selection, without having to create extra layers.
  10. Affinity Online Help Hello all, we're happy to be able to offer you an online version of the in-app help! Access Designer, Photo & Publisher Help here: https://affinity.help Here are some of the additional features we're able to implement as a result of having proper browser support: Dynamic language switching: The help will determine your language and (if it's available) serve you a localised copy of the help. If you prefer to read in another language, however, you'll find a combo box at the bottom left which will enable you to change languages—and stay on the page you're currently reading. Print: Sounds simple, but with full browser support we can now implement printing of the topic pages. The print icon in the bottom left will give you a nicely formatted printout of the current topic. Share: Clicking the clipboard icon will copy the current topic's URL to your clipboard, which means you can easily point other people towards topics that may help them. Responsive: The help was responsive anyway, including off-canvas menu functionality so you could collapse the window and still read a topic, but this is taken further in this version of the help. The help is formatted nicely and usable even on a 4" iPhone SE screen. Search: we've implemented our own bespoke search for the online help which is fast and accurate. Access it via the tab system along the top left. Favourites: you can add topics to your favourites list to easily access them during future browser sessions. Simply click the + (plus) icon next to the "Favourites" tab to add the current topic. With this online version you'll be able to print out topics and view them on your tablets/phones, which are two of the most common requests when it comes to help feedback. As always, if you have any feedback or find any issues with this online version, please let us know! Hope you find it useful.

  12. I'm doing a shirt for a client. He want's the design to wrap from front to back (including sides). How the **** do I do that on Affinity programs???!
  13. Hello everyone! I recently discovered the Affinity Softwares and i'm currently testing them with a lot o interest. Can someone help me with some small issues ? 1 - In Affinity Photo, can i see object outside the canvas, like i can in Designer ? ( didn't find any view modes or clip to canvar there ) 2 - Can i remove the lines in selections ? ( like in photoshop ) Thanks a lot!
  14. I'm running Affinity Photo on Windows 10. Version 1.7.1.404. I'm also a new user of Affinity software. I've got a basic rectangle and I've added 2 live filters: Gaussian Blur Procedural Texture I seem unable to edit either. Double clicking either seems to select the entire group/layer as seen in the attached photo. If I right click on the mask and select "Edit Filter" my entire image just turns white (as if all layers are disabled - even though they're all still checked). I can only get my layers back via UNDO. Side note is the only way I've been able to delete a live filter is to "release it" and THEN delete the new layer. Is there a better/faster way? I can disable the filter with a single click but I try to keep my layers/filters organized and remove the ones I don't need. Thanks!
  15. As a longtime Photoshop user coming into Affinity Photo for pro work I wanted to suggest improvement for Photo's curve adjustment tool. Curves works great but I think the picker tool needs to be able to instantly pick on the curves graph as I click on areas in the picture. Right now I can add points but I have to wiggle left or right in order for the point to be added, and then I might accidentally pull the curve up or down slightly when all I wanted to do was to select a point. Use case for this is that I might want to select all the color areas in a face and protect those ranges. Or select a few area in a landscape and pull all those areas up and down. I mention this because I can easily and quickly do this in Photoshop but this is one of those things where I really struggle with in Photo. However I have an idea for making curves better in Photo than Photoshop. What if I could lasso or shift-select a given range of points I have made in curves? How amazing would that be. Then I can pull a select group of points up or down and this becomes quite powerful. Think of this like the ability to move a selected group of vector points in Designer. You can't do this in Photoshop. Perhaps you can just pull up the points or stretch the selection - I'm referring to all that you can do in Designer with selected vector points.
  16. I used PS forever. It has a sketch remove area for blue or red sketches. Does photo or designer? I didn't see it or overlooked it.
  17. I have created macros on one workstation. I then use the export button on the macro panel to individually export each macro. For some reason a file must be open to do so. Once exported I transfer the file to our internal server from which my colleague copies the file to his workstation. He opens a file and then clicks the import button on the macro panel and when he selects one and clicks to import, it crashes. Any ideas?
  18. This is a really odd one using Photo V1.7.1.404. It has happened several times. I have a simple image with three four sided shapes (I'll call them panels). They were cloned from one original and have been filled with various colours as I tried to get my image right. Intermittently one of the panels will no longer accept colour changes by any method, flood fill, transparency changes, nothing works. Even more bizarre the colours shown are clearly wrong and even vary. So I select a panel and it shows one set of values, I deselect and then select it again and it shows a different (equally wrong) set of values, yet I have changed nothing. Saving the image exiting and restarting makes no difference. This is not something I have ever seen before. Stability seems better except for this strange behaviour. Once a panel gets into this state, it cannot be modified, the only solution is to ditch it and create a new one. This is more than a little frustrating in an otherwise excellent product.
  19. Since updating to 1.7.1.404 (Photo) on Windows 7 when using some of the NIK plugins, they start to load but then it turns to grey (the plugin screen) & Photo is then stuck & the only way out it to can Photo (end the process via the task manager). This has happened with the HDR & SilverFX. Others seem to be ok. I am using the old (free) Google version of NIK. Julie :-)

Is this where you post success without Adobe?
  21. Good morning, I have tried to install the new version of Affinity Photo (1.7.1.). Unfortunately, the only option / button I get is "Update" (see screenshot) although I cannot find any Affinity Photo software, version, etc on the computer. As soon as I click "Update", another window pops up, saying that there is an "Invalid Path". I cannot install the programm. I have changed a hard disk about a year ago due to technical issues but have uninstalled all old software. How can I do a new, fresh, clean installation? Thanks in advance for any advices!!!
  22. Hey there, I've already in a couple of forum threads about the file size behaviour of Affinity Photo. Unfortunately things still don't quite add up for me. I've got a 10MB NEF RAW file. I've reduced to RGB/8, history is turned off and I also used "Save As" trying to trigger the file streamlining. Still the Affinity Photo file is 112MB. What am I missing? cheers, Torsten
  23. Hi! I'm struggling to to do this – https://www.dropbox.com/s/npwdnrt7meqdax3/AFT_ScreenRecording - 20190702_1935.mov?dl=0 – in any of Affinity software. Am I missing something? Lack of a solid transform tool feels to me like a deal breaker. Best regards P.
  24. Dear support, I updated Affinity Photo, and use linked imaged when place an image by default. I need old placement: embedded image when I place an image. Or need select what I prefer. How or where can I change this function in AP and AD? Update: Options there is in Publisher, but nowhere in Photo and Designer! Please check this if missed option is a bug!
  25. Hello everyone, I'm having an issue where both Affinity Designer and Photo stay at "Not Responding" for about 3 minutes when starting up the program and THEN it opens fully. Basically it is super slow to open. This is a clean install as I just bought the software and there's nothing else running on the PC and the PC is still new and running well so it's clearly a problem with the software. I already tried changing the performance options (Renderer to the dedicated GPU instead of the iGPU which is the default for some reason. Also tried WARP). As for how well the program runs once it opens it's, meh, it runs jerky, zoom animations are slow and panning is super slow (This is NOT 60fps as advertised, more like 5fps) BUT if I use the touchscreen it works quite well, much better than the touchpad. I tried the software on a Mac and it was amazing but on Windows it kinda sucks so far. My Specs are: Windows 10 Home (1903 / 18362.145) Intel i7-8550U RAM 16GB iGPU: Intel UHD Graphics 620 dGPU: Nvidia MX150 EDIT: It appears that panning and zoom have improved somewhat! But sadly it still takes super long to start and still says "Not responding".
