  1. Almost every time I run a boolean operation to divide or unite vector curves in AD, it freezes on me as shown in attached image. I have to force quit and restart the app and try again in smaller doses or move it to Illustrator and try again there. I have an iMac with 12GB of RAM - I don't know if the issue is I need more RAM, or if it's still a bug Affinity is fixing? I ordered more RAM recently, so I'll be able to try it again after installing it to see - but I wanted to see if anyone had any info pertaining to this issue - thanks!
  2. I'm working thru the Designer workbook in 1.7.1 on my Mac, and when I try the ice cream cone geometry boolean exercise, I'm seeing something strange with the divide exercise. It took me a while to figure out the illustration was only after they had (unwritten) manually repositioned the major pieces to show it. However, when I do the divide with the 4 large original shapes I get a total of 58 curves including 48 tiny sliver slices in addition to the major resulting pieces. That can't be the way the divide tool should work should it? Erich
  3. Hello everyone! (I am new here, so pardon me if I posted my issue in the wrong category.) I've been playing around with Affinity Designer on and off for the past year and a half. I really want to fully transition to Designer (coming from Illustrator), but I keep bumping into the same little annoying issues that would make my workflow painfully slow. One issue in particular has to do with the Boolean operations. I've seen this question raised a few times on the forum before, but no solution so far. Will there ever be? The problem It appears that the Boolean Divide action doesn't work well with shapes that have one or more overlapping edges. The result is a big mess. You either get the compound shape partially divided or not at all. Then you would also get those pesky thin "hair" lines coming out parts of the resulted group. Artifacts... artifacts everywhere! Anyone can replicate this issue in a matter of seconds with basic shapes. Create a square and a circle of the same size. Apply different fills. Align them to the center of the spread and make sure that the square is behind the circle in order to see the individual pieces better. Divide both shapes using the Boolean actions panel. Normally you should have the four corners of the square that are seen outside the circle cut into separate pieces. The result would be 5 shapes in total (including the ellipse in the center). However, Affinity Designer has something else in mind (see images below). I have given up hope that they will fix this bug. Therefore, can anyone suggest an alternative work-around method for this issue instead? Thanks in advance!
  4. See my screen cap - in Illustrator I would select both elements, click on the Intersect function, resulting in two editable shapes. In Affinity Design tho, I get an empty canvas and layer "(Curve)." I just want to divide the ellipse shape into two editable elements. What am I doing wrong?
  5. I can never seem to get the ADD, SUBTRACT, DIVIDE, COMBINE functions to work right, can someone please tell me what I may be doing wrong or if it's something with the software settings? https://screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cqfeDnZfQU

    Divide outline?

Hello! I have been using AD for awhile now, but everytime I tried to make a logo or something 'geometrical', always ends up in confusion and frustration :D Here is what I meant I try to divide any shape (with fill or just the outline) that I aligned carefully, but always ends up some gap. . . . and sometimes I even need to open 'so cracked illustrator' to make this thing smoothly and export it to AD... :( Need help :D Appreciate every response :)
  7. Hi, I have a problem. When I want to divide like a donut, one circle inside another, I can't get what I expect. A hole in a circle and another circle that was inside. Instead what I get is three circles, like in the 2nd image.
  8. Sometimes, when you divide some curved shapes the result are so many extralayers and curves. If the operation involves curves and some intersection, the amount of layers are so vast that crashes my laptop. As an example, create an elipse, copy the layer four times and arrange the elipse as a veen diagram (check the attached image 1). if you select the four elipses and divide them you will get what you expected: 8 curves. However, if before dividing the curves you have a fifth elipse and place it in the center of the diagram, select the five elipses and divide them, instead of 16 curves, you will get 152 curves. (check the attached image 2).
  9. Leprechaun 2019 Initial inking This is the first in a series of videos detailing my process of vector inking my shirt design for the upcoming St Patrick's Day 5k. In these first two steps, I trace my approved sketch with a tapered vector brush in Affinity Designer, intentionally overlapping my lines so that in step two, I can divide them where they cross and delete away the excess portions. I've been making an effort to do more and more of my workflow in Affinity Designer instead of my standard Illustrator app so part of this process was exploration and trying out new tools and methods. I'm still hoping we get an eraser and a blob tool (amongst other features) to make this process a little easier. Also - the combine boolean leaves behind a TON of nodes in its wake... is that something being addressed?
  10. Okay.... gush this is a nightmare and actually an easy task in adobe illustrator.... so, I have this two forms: and i want to cut out the upper part, like this: first thing i tried, was substract, which doesn't work at all, so i went the old way and used divide and like illustrator i got many little parts. Okay, i cut everything out and get this: and now i only need to combine those lose parts, in illustrator it's "unite". Here, we have "add" and "combine" . So, i cklick on "add"and HOLY MOLLY, what a mess: even if i select only two individual parts and try to combine them, doesn't work. ... tried combine too, but it's still loading, after 76 minutes... every time I try to cancel it with esc, the program bugs completely out. (i can click on icons but it doesn't do anything) ... So, how the heck do I divide and combine my objects correctly? Edit: I know, i can create a path and cut out the upper part with ease but sometimes i just like taking this approach...
  11. Hi there! I'm astonished with Affinity Designer for ipad! I'm almost completely transitioned from my PC to iPad, just need a few more options. Suggestion #1: Select BY SAME FILL COLOR This is very important for professional work :) For example, if a group of objects (or shapes) are overlapping, what we need to do is to select them all, and divide them. After they are divided, we need to click on "Add" to merge the shapes together, and that's fine. But if we have a LARGE number of SMALL shapes, merging one by one can take forever. So, option "Select by (the same) Color" is very important and time saving for us designers. How I think it should be done: Solution 1. Click and hold the color (from toolbox) with pencil, or with finger, and while holding it select (with your left hand) three dots icon "..." and then choose "Select all" Solution 2. Add a new icon named "Select Same Color", or similar. Suggestion #2: SHAPE EFFECTS For me, as a Vintage illustrations and Logo designs fan, I would like to have a ARC LOWER, ARC UPPER, AND (possible) ARC tools. For example: Netflix logo. How I think it should be done: 1. After typing "Netflix" for example, convert curves, and than click on new icon set named "shape effects", than click on "Lower arc", or "Upper Arc". OK, that's for now, If I missed these options, if they already exist in same/similar form, please let me know.
  12. Hey guys, I'm trying to divide (or something) the shapes in the attached example. Basically I wanna cut the dark red shape from the black shape, so that the black shape will have an empty circle where the dark red circle is. How do I do that? I tried divide, but that only works the way I want it to only if the shapes don't overlap completely. Thanks divide-test.afdesign
  13. The Pathfinder equivalent tool found in Affinity Designer needs some work. I tend to create logos by overlapping shapes, using the divide tool, deleting the excess then recombining them to get rid of the lines. This works perfectly in Illustrator, however when trying the same method in Affinity Designer, I'm left with stray points and lines, it's essentially just combining the shapes like a group instead of merging. The space in between is to minuscule to be shifted manually. I don't know if it has something to do with you 1,000,000x Zoom, but the tool should somehow be reworked to allow the combination of cut shapes where the edges seemingly touch. Precision is great, but this is too much a distance a line thickness away shouldn't count. Even better give the option to toggle in on an off like you do magnetic tool. I'm currently using 1.42 and there seems to be a Memory leak issue when using the Pathfinder tools. If I highlight a bunch of objects to join, the program will hang, and the memory will slowly dwindle until most of my computer freezing causing me to force quit. 14. In this short tutorial I demonstrate the Geometry operations (add, subtract, intersect, divide, combine) in Affinity Designer 1.6.0 (destructively and non-destructively) with some samples. Keep on drawin' Norbert
  15. Hi Affinity I have a Question and I am not shure if this is more a request or stupidity on my hand. But I also read the feature request smoth curves/simplyfy curves and this might be the same issue in Affinity Designer. The problem I have is with the Divide Funktion. To illustrate the problem I made these pictures. As you can see in Step 2 the devided shapes are pretty clean if you use this funktion on two circles. But doing the same thing on the already devided shapes using the third one it starts to get messy. not only are there a lot of nodes on the curves that where intended to create but also a lot of unwanted shapes are created. This causes two issues. 1. Deleting the unwanted curves creates problems when combining the needed ones because there are gaps created 2. it also happenes that outlines are created inside of curves that are hard to get ride of because just deleting nodes can change the shape a lot. So the Question is if there is a way to avoid this issue or if this might be something for the Bugfix/Feature request section. I migrated from Corel and Shaping there is handled a little different. But from what I have seen in tutorial vidios of AI and Corel this seems to work better there. Still would like to say I enjoy working with AD and AP and also love your verry active Forum support which I considder verry Valuble Greetings Peet@MD
  16. I'm trying to do Geometry operations with symbols but they seem to be greyed out or unavailable. ---Repro steps--- 1) Create a shape using the rectangle tool (M) 2) Go to view/studio/symbols 3) Create a symbol from the rectangle tool 4) Drag this newly created symbol onto the canvas multiple times 5) Select several symbols and note that you are unable to add, subtract, intersect, divide, combine Is there a way to do these things with symbols?
  17. Hi, I'm looking to confirm whether there is a relatively straight forward method for destructively intersecting/divide multiple layers (14 for example) using one shape. Currently I can do this by duplicating the shape to the same number of layers there are and carry out the intersect operation 14 times. This can be particularly time consuming however and I believe there must be an easier way. Please note: I do not want to use masks, clipping or export slices as to the best of my knowledge these are not destructive processes. If there is an option use these functions to do what I am looking to achieve then even better! I utlimately want to split a multi layer vector image into multiple horizontal slices with the only shapes that are exported being within the slice boundaries.
  18. Hi there! I drew a picture, scanned and vectorized it, cleaned up the edges, and everything was looking good until I tried to separate the different objects using layer>geometry>divide. Suddenly all the white spaces in my drawing filled in with black! I'm guessing it's because the insides of the lines were a shape instead of just empty background... Is there a way I can prevent/fix this without going back to the original scan and changing the tracing settings (I used inkscape for the tracing) so that I don't lose the work I did smootjing and fixing it up? Thanks. The file attached has the original image below and a version I copied and then divided above.
  19. Hello, I'm new to the product so this could just be a newbie error. I've purchase Designer and am running 1.5.3.69 on Windows 10. The issue is this: When I draw a shape with the pen tool then copy/paste it using the Alt-drag option. I overlay the two layers offset and click the 'divide' button to create a third layer with the path for the overlapped section. But it creates additional layers and regardless how I delete them nothing turns out right. I'm following an video tut on how to draw an ice-cream. So far so good and the Divide function has been working well up to now. I have tried saving and closing the app then re-opening but nothing seems to work. I have created a video so you can see what is happening. maybe you can tell if its something I'm doing. I've also attached the file I'm working on. https://cl.ly/0k0t0P223Y2x Regards, John. 20. Hi, If you divide two overlapping shapes, you get three juxtaposing shapes (two shapes, and one other for the previous intersection). When you merge these back into one shapes in Adobe Illustrator, the merging is clean. But on Affinity designer, it creates a lot of points inside. https://i.imgur.com/e1hq0oB.gifv Is their a workaround for this ? Deleting this inside points manually take quite some time. Of course, the problem is even greater if you merge more shapes. Should I open a Feature Request ? Thanks for your help ! Note : I'm testing trial of Affinity Designer, (Win 10 x64), I'm pretty new to it.
  21. Hello I am trying to duplicate one image into 4 even parts on my layer. I am not trying to split the image - rather have the image duplicated evenly into 4 or multiple parts Thank you kindly -Cunningham
  22. Hi, this might be an easy question. how is it possible to devide a curve into equal sections. I need a spline or curve with 4 equal length nodes. Or is this even possible? thank you
  23. I'm trying to put a rounded rectangle over an image background, then use the divide, or any geometry tool, to take that area out so that I can have a transparent rounded rectangle in the middle of my image. It won't work for some reason though, and I'm not sure why. It just makes the whole image transparent, or with other tools will leave only the rectangle in place. What have I done wrong?
  24. Hello Affinity Team, it would be cool to have the Divide Blend mode included in Affinity Photo and Designer.
  25. Just as the title says, in Designer the divide function makes a fine line between the two divided objects. I think it's intentional but I'd like to get rid of the line. I know I can do it via the move tool but then I'd have to make some precise adjustments. A check box to disable the line would be a good addition. Or perhaps if an option is already there then please tell me where can I find it. Example - https://image.prntscr.com/image/ZsadZxvbSPuSIoDtZBBjJg.png
