    Hi Simon,

I bought this course, have been through it once and found it very helpful. I left a review on Udemy.

The workflow was very useful for me and I was particularly interested in the way you use various zones to correct or adjust an image in only the appropriate areas. The action on the NIK plugins was really good too. I've never used NIK before but downloaded them after watching that section. I can see there's enormous potential there and was particularly interested in the way you showed to control the changes in specific parts of an image.

So, IMO this course is another hit and well worth the price of admission. Well done (again).

    Simon,

I watched the teaser videos you made and it looks like this course will be another winner. This seems like a course that would go well with your other Affinity Photo courses perhaps after the basics or concurrently with Tips and Tricks. Would I be right in assuming that the workflow you're teaching in this course would apply equally well to non-landscape subjects?

Another recommendation for Simon Foster (aka Drippy Cat). I recall commenting in a review of Simon's Udemy courses that he not only shows you what to do but also explains why to do things in a particular way. I think you'll find it a great way to understand better and save yourself considerable time and frustration.

MarkW has provided the links to some free intros Simon did that'll give you a sampling of how his lessons are taught. The Udemy courses have some free preview sections and the rest is paid (very reasonably priced). Also, Simon is very helpful and responsive if you need help. Highly recommended.  Full disclosure: I have no connection with Simon other than being a satisfied customer.

Having processed numerous images recently it would be very handy if the crop settings were sticky. In particular the size ratios (like constrain to original) and also the darken setting. Having to reset for every crop isn't very convenient.

    Thanks,

    James,

I too find your 'project' videos very useful gaining insight and ideas for workflow. Between those and the massive number of other AP tutorials for specific actions I'm becoming much more confident and knowledgeable about photo editing than I ever did after years of Photoshop. My hope is that you'll do lots more.

Thank you for the excellent tutorials and all the work you've done to make this powerful app so much more accessible.

Just starting with Beta 11 and noticed the crop tool has the darken border option. Thanks for that. Any chance both that and the constraints could be sticky? It's a nuisance to have to reset with every image.

EdD got a reaction from drippy cat in September Sale! All drippy cat courses at Udemy at least 50% off
Well Simon... since you asked... Could I get back to you on this? My list is long and setting priorities apparently isn't my strong suit. Now that I've learned that money = crashing bore of course I'll be 'taking that under advisement'. Until then my decision/request is TBA.

Re your tutorials: I found the tips you presented in RAW processing really opened up possibilities for me and made a significant difference in how I control exposure in specific areas before getting into the photo persona. Your Tips and Tricks have also given me ways of approaching my images without always looking for a 'canned' solution. I think both courses we particularly useful because of way you presented the Solid Foundations. It is apparent that you have a good background in education and course development. (It's particularly apparent to me as a former instructional designer.)

My other observation has been that having worked through your material I'm now getting much more out of the many task-specific tutorials provided by Affinity (thanks James) and others. Having easy access to good solid information has made the switch to Affinity Photo both easy and productive. For me your courses compliment the others out there and saved me from many frustrating hours of poking around in hopes of figuring out how to do something.

    Thanks again,

Just offering an unsolicited opinion. I've used Simon's (aka Drippy Cat) Foundations, RAW development and Tricks courses in addition to the many free tutorials provided by Affinity and others. IMHO Simon's courses are well worth the price - they're an excellent way to get started and to learn some of the intricacies and techniques available. In my case I wanted to get up to speed with Photo quickly and in an orderly fashion - I've done my time with trial and error. I also really liked that Simon discusses the rationale for the various techniques he explains. These courses did the trick.

Full disclosure I have no affiliation with Simon or Udemy or anyone else associated with Affinity (Serif). (That said, Simon - I'm always open to discussing bribes! :) )

EdD got a reaction from Rigger73 in HDR/Tone Mapping Tutorial?
This request is primarily directed to you James. I've benefitted greatly from your huge  collection of tutorials. They're well done and to the point - thank you for all the work you've put into those. The index list you've compiled at the beginning of this thread helped a lot too.

I've just downloaded the Photo beta and have started trying some of the new features. So far I'm really impressed - the development team at Affinity are doing a great job. Of course with new features comes a demonstration of new areas of ignorance - VAST new areas of ignorance in my case.

It might be a bit unusual ask for tutorials for a beta version but since it's out there now more knowledge of how to use it could help with providing useful feedback.

My request is specifically for tutorials on HDR and tone mapping. Having tried HDR I clearly don't have any idea of what I'm doing. The basics of stacking make sense but the fine tuning/tone mapping has me puzzled (although if garish is the objective I'm on the right track!). I'm sure other new features would also be topics for further tutorial development.

    Thanks again,

Hi Rigger73 & now I get the user name (and the owl? Night creature? Clever!),

Oh thank goodness! I'll wring out the towel I used for my tears & take the pins out of the wax doll. Ok; so me being flippant aside, absolutely no offence was taken and I know what a nightshift feels like so my sympathies.

I thought you asked a perfectly reasonable question. I should also say thank you because you did me a solid favour. I got the chance to explain what my courses are about in answer to a fair question. Tell you what; if you go here https://www.udemy.com/affinityphoto-solid-foundations/ and scroll down you'll see some reviews and hand on heart, I didn't bribe anybody. I tried to with the Affinity dev team but there's over a dozen of them and they get a bit precious with their demands. When one complained that the Porsche was the wrong shade of lavender I told him to go fix the colour in a decent image editor if he could find one and man! The pouting I got back?! Not worth it.

So all good things to you and I hope you're not feeling too knackered. I also hope we see some offshore rig photos at some point. I bet they'd be interesting...

Having a wider variety of learning material can never be a bad thing!

It's up to the individual user to determine which video set and teaching approach would benefit them most. Simon's tutorials go comprehensively into concepts and, as he's said, tend to look in more detail at the whys and hows in an image editing context rather than a per-app basis. The in-house videos will tend to look very closely at specific features, functionality and operations or techniques that may be unique to Photo.

A large-ish part of my job within Serif is to produce these in-house Photo videos and uphold the quality standards expected of them. External users produce tutorials either as their living or as a hobby, so it does make sense that they charge for their hard work to try and recoup the costs of making them. It's down to personal opinion but I think Simon's tutorials are incredibly reasonably priced considering what they offer.

The in-house video tutorials will always be constantly improving, updating and covering new features as they roll in via updates, but having community members who work hard to produce training content will always be invaluable and appreciated, as they are supporting the software and making it more accessible to a wider audience.

    Hope that helps!

The more options, the better. People learn in different ways and with different methods. At least with these courses available, you can choose to view some of the free sample videos and see if this style would suit you better - there's no harm there :)

Hi Rigger73. I'm not going to claim that my videos are 'that much better'. The in house videos are very good and it's for the people who write the reviews of my courses over at Udemy to say what they think of the courses, not me. That said, the average user rating for a digital photography course at Udemy is 4.3 out of 5. The Affinity Photo courses I have on there have, at the time of writing, all time averages of 4.65, 4.67, 4.78 and 4.83, for which I am very grateful.

I think the main difference between the in house courses & mine are that the in house courses do a very good job of explaining the features in Affinity Photo. My aim and philosophy is to explain how to develop & enhance images and in this instance I use Affinity photo to do so. I explain what you should do, in what order you should do things and why you would want to, along with a few gotchas on the way. And in this case I use Affinity Photo to do so. The way I look at it, given I've been a designer for over 25 years, why not put as much experience from that as possible into the videos, as well as what a particular button does.

But ultimately it's up to you. I hope I don't come across as loudly blowing my own trumpet here because I'm a not a natural marketing man & I find all that stuff a bit cringeworthy. I just wanted to explain how I tried to make my courses a bit different. If anyone who has done one of my courses decides to chip in with their own thoughts on the matter I'd welcome it.

Well said MattP! Oh, and for the record, a huge amount of respect from me for the in house videos.

I think a lot of companies bringing out software don't realise how important it is to have quality training videos to back up their software. I know that when I'm looking at new software one major factor for me is how good I perceive the training videos to be; the less time I spend scratching my head trying to figure things out the better.

I think Serif have really taken the bull by the horns with the in house videos. They are clear and informative, and it's clear that whoever created them knows about photography.
