Let's not forget that this is a "Beta" version, that means bugs and incomplete or missing features. It should not be compared right now to software 20 years old or more. But...let's hope....

It should be compared. Because in the not too distant future, it will be released and then potential users will need to decide whether they are going to buy it. It does not matter how old the software is to the user, just whether it serves their purpose well.

I purchased Photo and Designer day 1... Sure there were things missing that have been added since. But not mind boggling how can that be stuff. The current lacks in Publisher (no proper master pages and no anchored images that flow with text) are what I would call showstoppers for anything but the simplest of projects. Sorta like if Photo couldn't initially open JPG's!

I might end up buying Publisher day 1 too... because I have had such good use of Photo and Designer that I feel like supporting their efforts, but not because I have any intention of using the software in the near term. Since I know what is going on with it, I can be patient, wait a year, and use other software in the meanwhile. I think it would be frustrating to have to depend on Publisher as is.

  2. I think this for sure needs to be addressed.

One of the big values of the Cloud is to have 1 version of a file. It is why in my organization we use google docs. You do not have to worry what is the latest version, or opening a version that has a newer copy somewhere else and inadvertently losing changes one made previously.

Right now as it is with Photo, I am going to have a Mac copy, and Cloud copy and an iPad copy and likely end up with multiple copies in multiple locations and it is going to be the bad old days of having to do lots of manual housekeeping to keep things organized. Seems like a nightmare to me.

Affinity Photo for iPad brings a lot of exposure, new users, and longer term commercial viability, which is great for all of us. Obviously a professional designer or photographer needs primarily the desktop software to do his/her job, the mobile counterparts are just a "nice to have" thing, so we need to have some patience... That said, I think that knowing which features will come in 1.6 would be very helpful in planning what to do in terms of software investment.

Luminar is a very promising software, especially now that's coming for Windows. It isn't a full replacement for Affinity Photo or Photoshop, not even close, but it's a nice tool to have if dealing with digital development. They just need a couple of features (which are listed as coming soon) to take over the RAW workflow for most modest photographers. I'm definitely buying it once released. :)

As a long time pro photographer and designer, the iPad version is not just 'nice to have'. It's fantastic! Feature equal versions for my iPad Pro and MBP is one of the best features ever and insures that Affinity Photo will be one of my primary tools. I can do lots of paying work primarily on the iPad and drawing and editing is really sweet with the iPad Pro 12.9" + Apple Pencil. They did a fantastic job on the GUI! I sure hope Affinity is planning an iPad version of Designer!

Because most of Affinity customers prefer "spectacular" unicorns, not "ugly" but solid workhorses and product managers know that?

So, in the meantime please enjoy a new color of interface :) While using another "never-ending beta" software, where the priority is to add new "shining" features instead of polishing core toolset, to improve processing quality and productivity. Crop is an essential tool to every photographer's workflow. How it is implemented in Photo is just one example of many things that need improvements and hold people back from switching to AP. PS and AP have comparable, long list of features but it doesn't mean they produce similar quality results or offer comparable user experience.

Please stop painting unicorn with another color, just deliver workhorse, reliable and comfortable for daily photographer work

If you think Affinity Photo is a toy and that the developers and most of the customers are not serious about making a good tool, why do you even bother using it?

For me, I get a lot of professional work done in AP, just like I did in PS. That said, I would be happy to see improvement to the crop tool.

I do think the method of making overly dramatic posts to somehow get what you want does not actually work well. But hey, you can keep trying that way  :)

  5. I really don't understand why so many people seem to dislike Adobe and refuse to accept the CC subscription model.  Personally, I think its incredible value for money and far cheaper than buying and junking other far less capable applications.  Yes, a viable alternative would be nice, but it hasn't happened yet.

You are entitled to your opinion... I walked away from Adobe due to the subscription model and will never look back. I still use Lightroom because I have not been forced out yet. It would be great if the Affinity alternative was out before that happened.

I've used and loved Photoshop for 20 years. At this point, I consider Affinity Photo a fundamentally better application. I don't even have PS installed anymore. I prefer Designer to Illustrator as well.

  6. Hi geronimo,

    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

This is by design. Here's a video tutorial that explains how drop zones work in the Layers panel. The video is for Designer but it also applies to Photo.

Let me know if you still have trouble.

On that video, the highlight color of the selected layer is brighter than it currently is in either app. It is easier in that video to see the changing highlight showing where it is going to drop when you let go.

Also, currently, the color of the highlight that appears when dragging and dropping is the same color as the selected layer, so if you drag a layer to drop it under a selected layer, you can barely see the highlight... I think the drag-n-drop color should be different than the selected layer color... and brighter so it is easier to see in general.

  7. I assume you use the Apple Pencil or a similar stylus? How's the experience with Astropad?

    Yeah, Apple Pencil...

Astropad is good. Feels good and not particularly laggy and seems reliable... I've not come across any issues. Some actions like scrolling menus gets blurry in order to be speedy but it's not a problem. Painting is crisp. Sometimes I paint in Procreate, but actually, besides quick sketching, I prefer Affinity Photo. With the iPad Pro and Astropad, I have a very portable setup where I can draw right on the screen... so easy to go sit in a cafe and work.

I'm in no hurry for an iOS version of Photo since I have this solution and I much prefer working on my MBP to the iPad Pro. I don't much like working in iOS... too restricted, too limited for connectivity, etc.
