  1. If it isn't a utility as suggested by MikeTO then I must ask which Mac OS are you running? Perhaps there is OS level interference. Some sort of enhancement by Apple as to how the cursor is displayed.

Finally there is always Roy's advice (from The IT Crowd) "Have you tried turning it off and on again. I know that over the decades my Macs have shown various weird behaviours after several days of uptime. A simple restart of the computer will usually clear them up.

I have a defined grid and I add a picture frame tool within the first cell (0,0 or upper most left let's say). Then I double click on the first field and it does indeed populate however the remainder of the cells populate with the same image I have mapped.

I was under the impression that the tool will iterate through sequentially through the rest of the data set and fill in the remainder of the cells accordingly. Maybe I'm wrong in how I understand this works.

I think what you are doing is Previewing the result. Now try and Generate the document. You should see the expected result. Preview only uses the first, or chosen 'record' to preview it.

  3. Make a text frame and choose the [No Style] Paragraph Style. Write something, set it up like you want. With the text caret still in the text (which is [No Style] go to Edit > Defaults > Synchronize from Selection and then imediately go to Edit > Defaults > Save. Now your default [No Style] will look like that for all new text. Or you can just take care to always select the desired Paragraph Style before typing.

Also you should maybe go to the Text Styles panel and choose Save Styles as Default from the little three line menu indicator.

...Out of interest, what font size do you prefer and leading size

    Ian

    11 on 12 or 12 on 13 or 14.

I also use First line indents instead of an actual Tab for the start of a paragraph and I tend to use no space between paragraphs for the bulk of the text. Unlike this setup for the forums where there is no first line indent and a line space between paragraphs. Again this is just how I work, choose your own look.

I am finding it confusing writing directly into Publisher. The distance between the lines of text always appears too small, making it cramped. I always have to use the leading override to increase the distance, which leads me to another question: is there a standard distance one should use?

Please do not use the "leading override" to increase the distance. Text Styles, in particular Paragraph Styles will be your friends. Choose your Font, choose the size, set the leading to be between 10 -20% of the size*. I use exact for the leading, not % or "default" or At Least or Multiple. It is just how I work, I am old school and a bit of a control freak. Use what you want.

Do not use Overrides to fix things, redefine the paragraph style. Overrides should be used rarely if at all**.

Is it better to create the main text in something like Word and then paste it into Publisher or is it the norm to write the text directly into Publisher using Text Frames?

This really depends on the amount of text, a few paragraphs totalling a couple of hundred words, sure use Publisher. A dozen pages with a few thousand words, use a Text Editor or Word Processor.

    * Not a rule you have to follow, you will not be set to prison if you don't follow this.

** A rule you should try and follow.

  6. Welcome to the forums @Stuart Frisken,

This "box" is the container for the text. It is how Designer, Photo and Publisher work. There are two types of text frames. The first is called the Art Text text frame and it will be the size of the text you type, no larger, no smaller than the text you type. The second is a Frame Text text frame, it can be whatever size you want it and will hold several paragraphs worth of text. Depending of course on the size of the font you have chosen.

It would be nice if we could invert the layer selection. This could be useful, for example, with documents with hundreds/thousands of layers/objects where we want to delete all of them except for the few objects we've selected on the canvas.

Once you have your selected items hit Edit > Copy. Now Edit > Select All and hit the delete button. Now Edit > Paste. Should work.

I was testing my settings for true black and white in the adjustments tab and found all pre-sets are showing as sepia and is also doing it when you select B&W in the layers panel. I checked my normal affinity photo 2 and it is not doing this.

I am assuming you are using a Black and White Adjustment Layer. The only way I can get a sepia tone is by having the Document in CMYK and the Blend mode for the Adjustment Layer set to Colour instead of Normal.

I have spent weeks reformatting a book in Word as Affinity is not compatible with Pages.

I would try using Pages to Export to DOCX file format.

And I would do all the formatting in Publisher, after I had done all the writing in Pages, Text Edit, Word or whatever. I would not bother with any formatting in the word processor.

  10. Welcome to the forums @Schwab,

Are you using Facing Pages? Are the "two pages" side by side or are they separated?

I use Facing Pages and I can just place the photo on the two pages.

    ===============

    Bienvenue sur les forums @Schwab,

Utilisez-vous des pages de garde ? Les "deux pages" sont-elles côte à côte ou séparées ?

J'utilise Facing Pages et je peux simplement placer la photo sur les deux pages.

  11. @Alfred and @MikeTO

It does seem to be font dependant, with EB Garamond I see one problem and with Adobe Jensen Pro I see a different problem.

@Patrick Connor, the problem is that the fonts (EB Garamond and Adobe Jensen Pro) do have the Alternatives/Stylistic sets it is just that the blank area occurs if everything is collapsed. Once they are both expanded I see the choices. If only one choice is expanded I don't see the choices, the blank area is the proper size to hold the information.

I cannot figure out where to find out what the pixel dimensions are....the size of the individual pixels?

The size of the pixels are ... well, one pixel x one pixel. If your image is 14639 w X 20640 h pixels and your DPI is 1200 then the image is (14639/1200) inches wide. If your image is 14639 w X 20640 h pixels and your DPI is 300 then the image is (14639/300) inches wide. In the first case the pixel size is 1/1200 inches x 1/1200 inches, in the second case the pixel size is 1/300 inches x 1/300 inches.

I leave the arithmetic as an exercise for the reader.

I don't understand why you keep saying I'm trying to duplicate a pressure profile! Let me put it another way - how do I draw an ellipse, using the line width tool, to look like ellipse 'B'?

I wouldn't bother with the Line Width tool at all. I would select the ellipse with the desired pressure profile, save the profile and then apply it to the new ellipse. Or I would copy the ellipse with the desired profile and use the Edit > Paste Style to the newly drawn ellipse. Or I would temporarily use the Synchronize Defaults from Selection (the ellipse with the desired profile being the selection) to set my default to the desired profile and then draw a new ellipse.

    =============

The Margins in Publisher are visual guides. They exert no influence on anything.

What I do is use a Master Page to hold my Text Frames and then if I want to change the size of the "margins" I will simply change the size of the Text Frames on the Master Page.

The important concept to understand is that your text will be held in the Text Frames, you can set the snapping candidates to honour the margins so your Text Frames will be the exact size of the margins but then if you change the size of the margins you will have to resize the Text Frames. Hence my use of Text Frames on the Master Page(s).

Tip: Please get into the habit of naming everything on your Master Pages with unique descriptive names. e.g. Left Text Frame, Right Text Frame, Left Page Number, etc. It will pay off with saved time fixing things.
