Well, I didn't know before😅, but it's easy to work with japanese texts in vertical style inside Affinity Designer V2 and even in V1.
Also, it will change all punctuation marks that work only for vertical writing style. Take a look on this video.

vertical - Trim.mp4 You only needs to change the typography alternative on Text Style> Typography> All alternatives: change 0 to 2. And is done.
The same option is right here on the 3 dots.  
I figure it out about alternatives right on this panel:

So, I thought on going to text style and automate those changes.
I had the following issue, but I get it now!
Start by changing to Heading 2, (it will revert to the default font Arial). Then, inside the Edit Text Style panel> Font Family>from [No change] to [Hiragino Font], this action will break that previous alternative.
 
I just realized that only the Hiragino font weights W0 and W7 work for vertical style on my PC!! (These two fonts where originally from my MacBook, so I converted them to use on windows.)
 
The font MS Gothic is from the windows system, and it doesn't have and alternative to change the horizontal bar to vertical.


By the time I wrote this post, I had figured out the issue regarding changing typography to a vertical style.

My display port cable connected on my monitor, was not getting signal on that time, only in HDMI. I just cleaned inside and reconnected the graphic card.
When I turned on, somehow display port cable was working.✅
Then, I checked Affinity and it's runing normal now. ✅
Also, there is a new Nvidia update and while updating, Affinity crashed. But still working!

Possibly a Windows Update provided a GPU driver update that has issues. Were any updates installed recently?

Can you check this post and attach your latest crash report.
Crash like this are normally related to the graphics card driver, so it would be worth making sure your graphics card drivers are fully up to date.

I had a Win11 update on the 13th, but it didn't give me any problems.

Hello, I'm French and I work on both Indesign and QuarkXpress. I'm also starting to work on Affinity Publisher. It depends on the type of work and the client. But when I have to do layout in Japanese, I use QuarkXPress 2020 which for me is better than Indesign both with vertical and horizontal text as well as Rubi. With Indesign I have to buy an extension for the vertical text as well as for the use of Rubi. So if with the Adobe subscription I still have to pay a subscription for extensions, it is extremely expensive.
 

The first edition of my book was translated into Chinese (traditional) and Japanese, and both were published in 2002. Although the content does not benefit from the additional and updated material that is available in the second edition version of Chapter 7, Typography, please enjoy these small gifts.

I feel like I am beating a proverbial dead horse by adding my voice to this thread, but it nonetheless seems worthwhile to add my perspective to the other voices who have chimed in here.
My background is that I have nearly three decades of experience dealing with CJK character sets, CJK encodings, CJK text layout, and CJK font development, with a very strong focus on the Unicode and Japanese aspects of those fields. I worked at Adobe for 28+ years.
I should also state that I bought a license for Affinity Publisher late last year, but I generally do not use it mainly due to the lack of this very fundamental feature. In addition to supporting the appropriate OpenType features, in particular vert (Vertical Alternates), vertical text frames need to be added. There was also mention of supporting ruby, which is also referred to as furigana. While this feature is certainly used in horizontal layout, with the 50% glyphs floating above the characters they annotate, there are special considerations for vertical layout in terms of their placement relative to the characters they annotate.
My daily-use layout app is Adobe InDesign, and have mine set up to expose full Japanese (and CJK) functionality. I am fortunate to have a lifetime Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, but decided to give Affinity Publisher a fair shake, which I did.
While my entire book, CJKV Information Processing Second Edition, would certainly be helpful, Chapter 7, Typography, in particular would be the most helpful for the Affinity Publisher developers. Please find attached the PDF for Chapter 7 for your reading pleasure. While the book was published almost 12 years ago, its content is still completely relevant today.
I suggest considering a Baby Steps™ approach, such as to start by adding support for 1) vertical text frames; 2) the OpenType 'vert' feature; 3) respecting the metrics in the OpenType vmtx (Vertical Metrics Table) table; and 4) the 90-degree clockwise rotation of Western text in vertical text layout. Also, be sure to study UAX #50, Unicode Vertical Text Layout.
Adobe InDesign, with its full Japanese functionality exposed, is the most sophisticated Japanese text layout app on the planet, meaning that it represents an extremely high bar. Still, it is not without its flaws. When I typeset my book over 12 years ago, using Adobe InDesign CS3-J, I faced many issues. While I was able to resolve or work around all of the issues, I felt compelled to write a two-page White Paper that detailed the issues I faced. Interestingly, although it is 12 years later, many of the issues have not yet been resolved. Of course, I am using Adobe InDesign 2020, and will have access to the 2021 version in a little over a month from now.

I have to state that there are massive differences made to the Japanese version of Adobe InDesign, comparing to the English version of Adobe InDesign.
Developers of Affinity Publisher may think that making a substitutive of English version of Adobe InDesign is enough. However, it will never be functionally enough for Japanese users.
(Seriously: not only Japanese users but all CJK users.)
 
Please, Affinity Publisher devs, read through this book (ISBN-13: 978-0596514471, written by Dr. Ken Lunde) and see how Affinity Publisher can be improved for typesetting Japanese.
Otherwise, people in this industry in Japan will never have a chance to give Affinity Publisher a buck. Period.
(My apologies for my strong tone, but this is how terrible the situation is.)

This is a very serious flaw.
 
This is the function most needed by Japanese.
We Japanese are waiting for a response.
Please tell us the development schedule.

Affinity currently lacks a lot of options required for full professional CJK typesetting, including things like Furigana and Warichu, dedicated composition/line break options etc., it's not just vertical text.
My understanding is that they are going to get the basic features for roman typesetting done first to make Publisher and the rest of the Affinity range as usable as possible as a layout software for the roman languages and only then add features for full CJK and RTL language support a later point in time, which is completely understandable.
At least IME for CJK languages seems to work fine now in Affinity 1.7 after being completely broken in earlier releases. That's already a good indication that this topic isn't ignored by the development team.
I hope that one day we will have full CJK and RTL script support in Publisher. The last thing we could hope for is a messy and fragmented situation like with InDesign where you have to install multiple versions of InDesign in parallel, all of them developed by third party companies where you can only hope they don't mess each other's files up.

@William Overington @ fonts works in only certain condition. and Affinity need to support this in order to use it. it's an ancient method to implement vertical text and available only on Windows.
Modern software usually don't use @ fonts method. so vertical text need to be implemented in modern way, not @ fonts.

Furigana or Ruby are text above japanese text to easily read kanji.
 
This is and option that we have in Microsoft Word, Indesign, Illustrator or Simple Furigana for Mac...
I also tried to COPY an text from Word and PASTE on Affinity but all words were wrong. >

Dear developers, please read and consider seriously.
I am not a programmer. So I can not understand how much you can not program.
Because of that, in Japan, design software has been working on the premise that Japanese vertical typography is implemented.
All the design applications of "illustrator", "Freehand", "Canvas", "Quark Xpress", "Pagemaker" and "InDesign" have implemented Japanese vertical typography.
We have never thought that vertical typography can not be done.
In the Japanese printing industry, we will avoid using apps that can not do "vertical writing typography" on a first look.
If you do not know, please be aware of this fact.
It seems that you have avoided this problem ever since the 2015 “Desiger” release.
I hope to put in a good mood soon.

So, I can use PagePlus X7 reasonably well, and I am still learning Affinity Publisher and Affinity Publisher is still in beta, so try to get the desired result using PagePlus as a start.
Start with a text box 15 cm by 15 cm with its upper left corner at X=10 cm, Y=10 cm.
Paste the text from the example in the original post in this thread.
It came out as three 'tofu boxes' in 12 point Times New Roman.
So, noting that there is a @Yu Gothic font available for later in the test, format the text in Yu Gothic at 48 point.
Now, rotate the text box using Arrange Rotate right, knowing that it will be wrong, but to observe what one gets, just as background information.
Undo the rotate so as to be back as before.
Now, change the font to @Yu Gothic
Now rotate the text box to the right.
Yes! It gives the result wanted by the original poster.

So, can this be done using Affinity Publisher?
