I frequently lose track of the cursor, especially at the start of lines because it's hidden behind the blue outline of the text frame. If possible I'd like to be able to make it a few pixels wide, but I haven't found any setting (and google hasn't helped me).

Unfortunately, the text insertion cursor is still all but invisible i Publisher.

If you are having trouble in a Mac finding the cursor, hold down the space bar and you will get the pan tool which will show you where the cursor is.

But the question seems to be about the text insertion cursor. Won't holding down the space bar just insert spaces in that case?

When I loose track of my cursor, I press [shift]+[arrow right]. This makes a very visible character selection. To cancel this selection and return to the former insertion point, one tip [arrow right] is enough.

That was new to me. Thank you, although I will be hoping for an even better solution...

Thanks for mentioning that. Windows has a similar setting.

Unfortunately, Publisher ignores it :(

Oh, I haven't noticed before. The cursor enlargement works for every cursor – except the blinking text cursor, in any app. While it makes sense because its size is related to the current font size, but yes, it could get donated more stroke width.

Workaround: a text selection with Shift + Arrow Key highlights the cursor position:
– Hold shift + left or right to highlight characters, hold shift + up/down to highlight one line.
– With just the opposite arrow key the cursor comes back to its initial position.

One like this could be useful:

On Windows there's an accessibility setting specifically for the blinking text cursor, and it works in applications provided by Windows. But it does not work in Publisher and at least one other 3rd-party application that I tested.

If the blinking insertion point cursor was wider, wouldn't it obscure at least part of one of or both of the characters it was next to? I don't think I would like that.

The letters that would be covered show using inverted color:
