Reduce physical size of slice maintaining proportions?

Recommended Posts

I have tons of .ai with 3 artboards on top of each other allowing me to use I large .psd. In .ai my main artboard is 4500 x5400 png. The smallest artboard  3500 x 2630, but it is resized in the .ai save as panel to a 350 x263 jpg. Is there anyway resize  the 3500 x 2630 to 350 x263 with using slice in export?

Yes, no problem.
First export settings is relative - "0.1x", and second settings is absolute - "350w, 263h".

Sorry, can you clarify the difference between .1x and absolute 350x263?

Also are the 3 photoshop images that come in on different my artboards (opening from ai) 1 image linked or 3 separate image increasing file size?.

In your case none - the result is the same.

However, sometimes it may be useful to have the export always be 10 times smaller no matter how the original size changes, but sometimes you need an exact size export, no matter how the original size changes.

Does this work for jpgs, too?

Yes, just change the file format.

File format—select a file format to be exported from the pop-up menu.

The help topic for the Slices Panel is not very informative about this but to oversimplify slightly, any value of the form <value1> comma <value 2> is an absolute scale setting. Any value that does not include two values separated by a comma is a relative one. There are also two basic kinds of relative scale options:

The first specifies an aspect ratio "x" relative to the original one. So for example, "1x" does no rescaling at all; "0.5x" scales the original dimensions to half the original size; & "2x" scales to twice the original size.

The second specifies a relative height (h) or a width (w) value only, which scales the height or width to that value respectively, adjusting the other dimension proportionally to maintain (as closely as possible) the original aspect ratio.

So for instance, consider this tiny export slices example.afdesign file that is just 200 px wide by 300 px high. I set it up to export 4 JPEG files in the Slices panel, each a different size:

slices.jpg.e2a9caa809157c9cc32780ce77676c69.jpg

The first produces a 200x300 px JPEG, the second a 100x150 px one, & the third a 33x50 px one, all maintaining the original 2:3 aspect ratio as closely as possible. The last is an absolute scale value so the aspect ratio is not preserved & the image size is only 32x32 px.

For this simple example I did not create any additional slices besides the default one that includes everything, but it works the same way for any other slices created in the Export Persona.

It that not an absolute value rather than a relative one?

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

As I said, I was oversimplifying a bit, but less simply I suppose it could be considered absolute for one dimension & relative for the other.

This is true, but it is easy to derive the correct use from the presets.

It is somewhat evident that x, w, h, & p are allowed suffixes but there is no indication if unit suffixes like for inches or cm are allowed or if so what the suffix would be. Regardless, I think it should all be explicitly mentioned in the help topic, otherwise it is not of much help!

And the exported image has a transparent background? I can't see any chessboard in your screenshot.

Document Setup, Colour, set Transparent background.

Artboards color set to None.

If you need an image with color background, insert pixel layer (New Pixel Layer) and fill you with Flood Fill Tool. Personally, I switch to APhoto (File, Edit in APhoto...), and insert New Fill Layer.

How do I set artboard color to none?

Export png had a square white png had a white background but I have no white background layer.

I switched back to .ai and did a save for web png and got my transparent background.

FYI 4500x5400 pngs are for T-shirts.

Draw Persona, select artboard (in Layers panel), Colour panel, set color to None (left small circle).

I'm still missing something. I exported text then place in .ai on a black background. png comes in with a white square background.

Attached the .ai image and the AD image.
I really appreciate your patience and your help : )
