Substract shape from eps

Hi there.

I have an EPS (the skull) and I want to substract a shape (the M) from it. But whenever I try that, I wreck the EPS.

How can I do that?

subtract the M and then go to layer>fillmode and set it to Alternate.

Why doesn’t a simple subtract work? What does the alternate fill mode actually do?

For a more detailed explanation of fill modes, you can do a web search on something like "alternate fill rule" or jump to this article, but basically it has to do with the different topological ways of deciding what is inside complex curves (& thus should be filled) & what is not.
