The project is finally done. For the past 13 weeks I’ve been working on a gaming magazine while at SAE. The magazine deals with gaming but unlike other magazines where they talk about news and reviews TossUp talks about in-depth gaming information such as what works, what dose not, fail within games, game mechanics and more. The project was made with a  mix of affinity designer, affinity photo and indesign.

(This project was made for a uni assessment and is not a real magazine.)

If you would like to view the magazine online click here: https://adobe.ly/2Ex6EaF

Below are mockups of the magazine.

This is really nice work.
Good use of space, colour, images and shapes.
I particularly like the way each feature has been given its own look while still keeping within an overall "house style".
My only criticism would be that the front page isn't as good as the rest of the magazine. That's not to say that it's bad, just that it doesn't seem - to me - that it's had as much attention given to it as the rest.
That small issue aside though, great stuff.

To my inexpert eye, the only thing wrong with the front page is the placement of the blocks of text. In particular, “More than just the game.” is too close to Mario’s head; I’m also not a fan of full stops (periods) at the ends of headlines.

Thank you so much for the feedback!! and I agree with the front cover design. This was a uni project and we had a set time of a week for front cover designs so I was limited to the amount of time I had along with other stuff that cause me being unable to revised the design at a latter point (things like helping other students out with there projects and setting up printing and documents for printing for the whole class)

So I would have liked to have more time on it. With that said thank you so much and glad you liked it.

Thanks for the feedback!!! the reason behind the text being close to Mario head was from student feedback that it would be placed that way since other magazines did similar things.

Looking back at the design now. I agree with you too now about the full stops, If I re-did the design I would have removed these. Tho still happen with how the project came out in the end and having a printed version of a project I design is cool to have!!!

Great work, shizumiaoki!

I was particularly interested in your tool setup - AP, AD and InDesign. I recently purchased InDesign (while waiting Affinity Publisher) and need to build up a company brochure for a client. I have no previous experience on InDesign but I have spent some time with tutorials, so I'm ready to start the work.

Can you share some insights or techniques of your workflow, how you export/import pixel and vector images, which file formats do you use etc.?

Well spotted! I have to confess that I hadn't inspected the content of any pages besides the front cover. On the spread after the one which says "magaizne", the cassette label reads "More then just the game." (instead of "More than just the game.") and the callout on the next spread says "The story of the switch gose back to the beginning". The next spread reads "Nintendo want as broad an audience as possibly." (instead of "... as possible.") and two spreads later we see "If the player becomes to powerfull, ..." (instead of "... too powerful, ..."). There may well be other examples that I've missed.

Yet another come back of the famous.... "all your base are belong to us" ... :D  (I mention it too much.... I just love it....)
Nah, those are the kind of typos produced due to writing at light speed...

But for a magazine project, even if is a Lore Ipsum sort of placeholder, better get it right before delivering to the client, or even worse, as in this case, a teacher.... ;)

I agree, it's good design.
