AnthonyW Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 So I just thought Affinity software took a long time to start up even when you quit the program then restart it again, but I just got a new computer and when I launch either Photo or Designer on the fresh OS install, they start almost instantly. I then loaded my backed up drive image onto the machine and now it take a while to start up again (around 12-14 seconds). I'm running a MBP 15" 2017 2.6ghz i7. I also tried completely uninstalling them on the partition, then reinstalling with no improvement. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? I really don't feel like re-installing my partition from scratch again as I just did that about 4 months ago. Affinity seems to be the only software that's affected. Quote
Staff Chris B Posted November 30, 2017 Staff Posted November 30, 2017 Hey AnthonyW, welcome to the Affinity Forums. How many fonts do you have installed? It might be worth going into Font Book and disabling all the fonts under the User tab to see if this makes a difference. Just leave the standard Computer ones in for now. AnthonyW Posted November 30, 2017 Author Posted November 30, 2017 Hi Chris, that did it. Thanks! I just find this strange because in Photoshop I haven't noticed a difference in startup times because of this. Quote
Staff Chris B Posted November 30, 2017 Staff Posted November 30, 2017 Hey AnthonyW, I think it is because we enumerate the font list every time you launch the app. We also do this with colour profiles and a few other things. Mithferion Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 That also happens with Inkscape: if you ave a lot of Fonts, the startup will take a lot. After that, later runs of the program will take less time. Best regards! R C-R Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 It also used to happen with Photoshop Elements -- I don't know about the newer versions but the older Mac ones used to take a long time to open because they built the font, 3rd party plugin, & several other references anew on each launch of the app. Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.5.7 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 All 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.7
Mithferion Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 On Windows, the only font family installed by Photoshop Elements 10 is Myriad Web Pro. Best regards! If I remember correctly, on Macs there were several fonts installed by the older versions of PSE I used. They were 'private' & only available to installed Adobe apps, but regardless of that on every launch of the app the splash screen showed a lot of text about building/referencing/whatever the normal installed fonts, plugins, & several other resources. It took quite a while for that to complete before the splash screen was replaced with the UI. Mithferion Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 I see. In this case, you can use Myriad Web Pro on other apps, but I remember correctly, the License doesn't allow you to do that.
