I CAN´T DEVELOP NIKON RAW (NEF). FILES from my Nikon Z8

Recommended Posts

I have taken many pictures with my new Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera. When I try to open  the RAW files (NEF), with Affinity Photo V2,   I obtain a blue background. and it is not possible to develop these files.

JPEGs  appear normal in Affinity photo V 2.4

Is there somebody who can help me?  What should I do ? Or is Affinity Photo not able to read NEF files from the new Nikon Z cameras??

Best regards,

Tomas Wilde

While that's true, the reports I've seen from other users are that the files with High Efficiency Compression don't open at all; they give an error message in 2.4.

@TOMAS WILDE:

  • Are you on Windows or macOS? If macOS, are you using the Serif Labs Raw engine or the Apple engine? (You can find that setting in the Develop Assistant).
  • Can you check which compression method you are using with your camera?

I think that's why it says "Standard Compression Formats" @walt.farrell

Apple Core Raw opens the Nikon Z8 Raws files fine.

Including High Efficiency Compression? Or just standard?

I think the image used was Standard, I'm not really sure but after further research I'm guessing it was standard.

Although everyone makes a big noise about HEIF files, there isn't a single clear image from a Nikon Z8 using HEIF which I find very odd considering all the hype, I've checked multiple reviews with sample images and they are either NEF or Jpeg with no info as to whether High Efficiency* or High Efficiency was used.

Same Problem. I took pictures with the setting "high efficient compression". This does not work at all.

I hope they could change this as soon as possible.

Now I have to take all pictures again? Impossible

Or, just use the software supplied with the camera and convert to a different format.

Thank you. I already have used  the Nx Studio software, and converted the NEF /RAW) files from my Nikon Z8  in TIFF files and then I can do some work in affinity photo. Thanks again. Anyway Serif should do something so we can develop the Nikon RAW files in affinity. Best regards.

The issue "Nikon Z8 with compression fails to open" (REF: AF-1950) has been fixed by the developers in internal build "2.6.0.2519".
This fix should soon be available as a customer beta and is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Affinity Info Bot to notify us.

Apologies for going slightly off topic, but is 2.6 expected to include compressed RAWs from the Zf too?

None of the Affinity staff are visibly following this particular discussion, and they would be the only ones who might know the answer to that. Perhaps best to wait a few days for the beta to begin, and the new support will be fully described at that time.

It's my understanding that the High Efficiency RAW support for Nikon cameras will extend beyond the Z8 model in our next major release, however as the updated official supported RAW list has not yet been released, I cannot guarantee full compatibility at this time.

From my initial testing within an internal alpha build, it does appear as though compressed RAWs from the Zf can be opened for developing.

I hope this clears things up!

Welcome to the Affinity Forums @Elck!

RAW support in Affinity is provided using the LibRAW library, which doesn't currently support this camera model.

Once support has been added in LibRAW, Affinity Photo can then look to update our library to include this support - however as this support is determined by a third party library, we're unable to provide any ETA for when this model may be added, our apologies.

In the meantime, you can find our full list of currently supported cameras here:

I hope this helps :)
