Should be simple but I can't make it work…

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

On a new document, I create a master page.

On that master page I create 2 text blocks.

I link both of them.

I go on my first page, I apply the master page that I created just before

I insert some long text.

I wanted publisher to automatically create all the pages needed to get all my text visible.

I doesn't.

My text goes from block 1 of page 1 to block 2 of page 1 then nothing…

What have I missed ?

To autoflow text: Shift-click the overflow icon at the right edge of the overflowing text frame. New pages and text frames get created until text overflow no longer occurs.

Works OK here.

The text flows onto the next page just fine with the shift and click action

Well I'll have to wait until some macOS people come in… and maybe with macOS Ventura and Publisher 2.1.1…

Thanks for testing @carl123

Fiew months ago I had to reset to zero that MacBook Air computer, and I did not install the Affinity Suite on it so I can't tell.

You have a Single page Master applied to a Facing pages Spread. You need a Master Page that is a Facing Pages Spread. Try this, I made a pair, one with text on all pages and one with text on the Right page only.

Thanks @Old Bruce !

It is true I'm used to working with facing pages and for this last document I forgot to un-tick facing pages…

I'm not sure why, if you create a facing pages document, you are enable to create single page masters ?

Maybe master pages and pages are 2 separate things that can live side by side without consequences.

Maybe this has to do with sections ? In one same global document, some may be single pages and some may be facing pages ?

Without being able to test V2: what makes you think so? It should even work without using any master at all, – right?
Here I don't see a reason why a single master page should not work for text auto-flow in a facing page document. For instance in this V1 sample the single master gets auto-used as left and right page:

Interesting…

But on your second "shift-click" it create page 3 and it is empty ???

If you "shift-click" on page 3, does it create page 4 with text ? I guess not…

Edit : Some re-wording…

Ah, thank you, I haven't noticed that before. – Now, since a shift-click causes new pages automatically and auto-flow / auto-link works at first from the right page 1 to the left page 2, the missing text frame link feels quite confusing.

If I shift-click multiple times in my sample above on page 2 then every single shift-click auto-creates a new page, multiple, too. Whereas the frame link appears to work reliable only if I shift-click the right pages after manually having created the frame link from its previous left page.

Without really going deep into this, I have a feeling that something is not working as it should ?

As if we CAN do something, but IT IS NOT recommended ?

I agree*, it seems to work half way only: It generates a new page … and then quits … and, additionally, although it does work for the first page (pg 1 > 2).
(*while the solution of a facing master page setup is easy to do, the UX with a single-MP setup appears strange)

Do you get the same result in V2: A New page but not linked – or is there a different result between V1 and V2?

Starting from the affinity file I sent at the beginning, using single page master, going to page 1 and inserting some example txt via the app, I get :

image.png.6a331cd1eaf07464842bc79e8cbbc3cb.png

And when I "shift-click", it does nothing, I'm stuck there.

BUT (that's important) when I insert the example text (a long text not immediately generated by the app), that I sent at the beginning, I get this when I "shift-click" :

image.png.581321ad685ce5961a534369e8cc9395.png

That is why I was talking about strange behavior…

I guess nothing logical here ??? Something is wrong !

inserting some example txt via the app,

That it worked different to me at this step is related to my deactivated app "Preferences" > "General" > "Insert filler text as text". This way a filler text gets auto-expanded if the available space increases (e.g. font size, frame size, …), while if the option is active, an auto-generated filler text doesn't cause a text overflow initially.

Set it unticked > create a text frame > choose menu "Text" > "Insert filler text". Then increase the text frame by one of its regular handles (not the outer one) / or reduce the font size. With the option unticked it will auto-add more filler text. Additionally you can activate the option menu Text > "Highlight Fields". Then, with Text Tool & Text cursor a right-click offers the pop-up menu option "Expand Field" to turn this filler text to 'plain', non-auto text. https://affinity.help/publisher2/English.lproj/index.html?page=pages/Text/fillerText.html?title=Filler text
