Designer crashes immediately after applying Curves on an image

Recommended Posts

Hello, here is a crash sequence i've encountered in Affinity Designer & Publisher 2.1.0:

1. Create a new RGB A4 Document (Create Artboard: Checked)

2. Document Settings > Change Color Space to CMYK with FOGRA 39 Profile

3. Drag & Drop an RGB image

4. Window > Resourse Manager > Make Linked

5. Layers Panel > Adjustments > Curves... and it crashes. Note that the Layers panel must be in a floating window.

Preferences

Hardware Acceleration: On

Hardware:

PC1: Windows 10 22H2, RTX 2070 • NVIDIA Studio Driver 535.98, 2 Monitors, Tablet, FontBase Font Manager

PC2: Windows 11 21H2, GTX 1060 • NVIDIA Studio Driver 531.61

Works fine for me. We may need to have a document (saved before step 4), and possibly a screen recording.

Question: When you say Adjustments > Curves I'm not certain what you mean. Do you mean the Adjustments icon from the bottom of the Layers panel, or Layer > New Adjustment < Curves from the menu?

Did it generate a crash report?

Following Gaal Dornik's recipe, AD will crash every time.

Through more testing I've found that you don't need to follow the OP's recipe to get AD to crash. So far I've managed to crash AD:

  • File>New, choose any document size
  • Not creating an artboard
  • Not changing the color profile to CMYK FOGRA 39

This last time I just created a new document, I used one of my presets 5472x 3648, RGB 8, then drag and drop a JPEG. However the Layers Studio must be floating. If it's docked no crash.

EDITED;

AP will crash doing the same.

Publisher 2.1.0 is crashing on these configs:

PC1: Windows 10 22H2, RTX 2070 • NVIDIA Studio Driver 535.98, 2 Monitors, Tablet, FontBase Font Manager

PC2: Windows 11 21H2, GTX 1060 • NVIDIA Studio Driver 531.61

Designer 2.1.0 on PC2 works fine.

Hi @Gaal Dornikand @Ron P.,

I'm trying to replicate this on my laptop with an Nvidia RTX 3050s running Studio Driver 535.98 and haven't been able to when following both recipes for this.  The crash reports from @Ron P.don't really tell us much, other than it's a kernel DLL that's crashing.

@Gaal DornikCan you attach your latest crash report and I'll debug that.  I'll also see if anyone else on the team can replicate this crash.

Hi @Gaal Dornikand @Ron P.,

Me again! All of the Tech Support team have been unable to replicate this crash.

Can you just try something to help us narrow down where the problem is?  Go into Settings for Affinity and on the Performance section set the Renderer to WARP, close Preferences, restart Affinity and see if you can get Designer to crash following either recipe.

I don't have Software rendering, just my graphics card (Nvidia GTX 645) and Warp. I'm on my way to a doc appointment. Will look further at this when I return.

That was my mistake, it is WARP you need to set it to.

@stokerg

Changed to Warp Renderer, and AD still crashes following the recipe. However the many ways I got it and AP to crash yesterday, I haven't been able to yet today.

Have you tried to crash AP2 this way?

Yes I have, and AP does not crash now. I don't know why it crashed before and not now. This is before changing the renderer to Warp. The only change was I had to leave for a short time, so I shut down my PC. Maybe that corrected something in AP, but AD still crashes.

Hi @Ron P.and @Gaal Dornik,

I'm still struggling to replicate this crash in either Designer or Photo :(

If its still crashing when set to WARP, we can rule out graphics card drivers, so thats something at least!  If you could read this post and zip up your Settings folder for Designer and upload the zip file to our Dropbox here and i'll see if can replicate it with your settings.

New Document
Place JPG File
Float Layers Window
Add Curves adjustment
Result: Crashes every time in Designer & Photo (multiple tests)

Additional Info:
Start Affinity Photo
New Document
Place JPG File
Float Layers Window
Add Levels Adjustment & Delete it (no crash)
Add Threshold Adjustment & Delete it (no crash)
Add Curves adjustment (now no crash)

Restart APhoto - still no crash
Restart Windows - Still no crash

Designer Still Crashing

Did the above with Designer now Designer no longer crashes even after PC Reboot

Now unable to recreate any crash

Something has cured itself!

Reproduced the crash in a fresh installation of Designer via Virtual Machine with Windows 10 22H2, almost clear system - default Settings, no font managers etc.

Also crashes after adding/deleting Levels & Threshold.

Affinity Photo seems to be unaffected.

P.S. Here is screen capture of the crash sequence in Virtual Machine, just in case...

Good news everyone in this thread, I've finally replicated it! Key part is to undock the Layers Panel after placing the image.  I always have my Layers Panel floating, so thought that was all that was needed.

Thanks @Gaal Dornikand @Ron P.for your help in this thread, I'll get this logged with the Developers :)

@carl123Thanks for the extra information, I'll add that to the report.

Just an update. I've been toying with this since it was reported, and stokerg was able to reproduce it. I'll go through about 10 attempts before quitting. This is several times daily. It's only crashed 2x. Very strange at first it would easily crash, and repeatedly.

Also I've not experienced AP crashing, and I've tried it numerous times too.

The issue "Placing an image and then undocking Layers panel and applying a Curve Adjustment will crash the app" (REF: AFD-6656) has been fixed by the developers in internal build "2.2.0.1900".
This fix should soon be available as a customer beta and is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Serif Info Bot to notify us.
