apple color emoji support V2

Recommended Posts

I can see that the Apple Color Emoji font support exists in Designer v2, but not in Photo or Publisher. I know that I can save the emoji images as jpg or png and place there where I want them but I just don't understand why the Apple Color Emoji font is not fully supported in Photo or Publisher.

Can you please fix this in the next update release?

Where do you see that?

They work fine all 3 apps on my iPad.

Hi Walt, I have not tested in on iPad. This question is regarding Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)

But I've attached how the emoji looks in all three apps, using the exact same line.

I like to sign things off with 🙂❤️ after my name and couldn't do it in a PDF that I created. I needed to create a PDF with the emoji and then "place" them into the document. I know it's a workaround but it would be great if Affinity made it possible for the Emoji to show up easily in all three apps.

I can't duplicate this issue. Using Publisher 2.1, I created a new document, created artistic text, chose the Apple Color Emoji font, opened the Glyph Browser panel, and then inserted a bunch of colour emoji.

Your screenshot shows you were using APub 2 Beta, but I can confirm that using the 2.1.0 release versions of all 3 apps works for me like it does for you via the Glyph browser.

Thanks for all your comments. I appreciate the help.

Following your comments above, I decided to try creating a new document and that seems to work perfectly fine. Why wouldn't it work on a pre-existing document?

Any ideas? What can I do to check or change my existing document so that I can accept the Emojis properly?

Hi @Faccia,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble!

Can you please provide a copy of your Affinity document here that does not display this font correctly in Publisher / Photo?

This can be a 'cut down' version of the file, containing only the text object(s) that are not working, or alternatively I can provide a private upload link for your file if you wish.

Many thanks in advance :)

When I open your file in APub V2.1.0 on my Mac I see the emojis on page 2:

I do not know why you do not.

Hmm, I see the problem you're reporting if I open your document in 2.1 retail, the public release, but if I open it in the last 2.1 beta (1806) it works fine. I'm unsure why my two installations are giving different results but I'll do some testing to see if I can narrow this down.

Weird. I am using the retail version (2.1.0) & get as above.

I can't figure this out and it may require Serif to review. I can't find a reason I'd see a difference opening the same document in retail vs. beta given there is almost no difference between 1806 and the final 2.1.0.

I wonder if it somehow has anything to do with the macOS version? Like I showed, the emojis display correctly for me in the retail version, but I am running 10.15.7.

I see same faulty behaviour in retail and latest beta (with beta settings reset). Only emojis in Designer.

Better to let Serif do the work, problem doesn't seem trivial.

So 3 different behaviors?

But @MikeTO is not having problems in both, & I am not having any issues with the 2.1.0 retail release.

OK, for me on Catalina 10.15.7, the sample document only opens incorrectly with the retail and beta versions of APhoto 2, where I just get a row of yellow faces.

Weirder & weirder! On Catalina with the retail version I get all the emojis, exactly as shown in my screenshot above.

Thanks for all your help, everyone. I really appreciate it. Yes, I thought about doing a copy and paste of all the content into a new document. I'll wait to hear back from Serif.

Lots of love to you all. Thanks again. 🙂❤️

Many thanks for your file provided and all the testing above, this is certainly appreciated!

I am using Ventura 13.4 and with this file I see the following behaviour:

  • Publisher and Designer 2.1 (retail & beta) display the Emojis as expected
  • Photo 2.1 (retail & beta) do not display the correct Emojis

I will therefore be logging this file with our development team, as I cannot see any specific reason for this.

I will also be including the information from the thread above within this report, specifically that:

  • User Faccia & RedSands (macOS version TBC) sees the correct Emojis in AFD 2.1 only, not in AFP or AFB 2.1
  • User R C-R with macOS Catalina 10.15.7 sees the correct Emojis as expected in all 3 Affinity retail 2.1 apps
  • User MikeTO with macOS Ventura 13.3 sees the correct Emojis within APB 2.1 beta, but not in AFB 2.1 retail (both 1806)
  • User markw with macOS Catalina 10.15.7 sees the correct Emojis within AFD & AFB, but not AFD 2.1

Interestingly the behaviour I experienced matches the behaviour reported by markw, though we do not have the same macOS version. However this is not the same behaviour that R C-R is seeing on the same macOS version - so there does appear to be more here than first meets the eye.

Just to confirm for our devs, @Faccia & @Red Sands, what version of macOS are you currently running please? :)

@Dan C After upgrading to 13.4 today, I re-tested the apps

  • 2.1.0: Designer works but Publisher and Photo do not work
  • 2.1.0 beta 1806: Designer and Publisher work but Photo does not work
  • 1.10.6: Designer and Photo work and Publisher half worked - some glyphs were missing

The only odd thing is our inconsistent results but I think the short answer is that Publisher doesn't support this type of font. Others with more knowledge than I have were discussing this here:

Thanks all, I've updated the development log and included the above links to previous threads - the behaviour remains inconsistent with our QA testing of the issue, so I'm awaiting further information from our devs as to a possible cause :)
