Using the layer effect tools doesn't work.

If you choose fx. outer glove, you don't get the correct  choices. Menu is wrong.

If you exit FX and go back in they will be there.

Problems mixing layer effects. It doesn't seem to work.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

A screenshot would help us understand what is happening. One common user mistake is not realizing that there are two actions:

  1. Applying the effect. To do this, you check the box for that effect.
  2. Adjusting/setting the effect. To do this you click on the effect name to select it, which makes its controls available.

This is a very annoying aspect of the FX panel

If you tick an effect the right-hand side fields do not automatically change to those associated with that effect. You also have to click on the effect's name (on the left-hand side) to see the correct fields

Yes, once you have any effect ticked the FX panel will correctly select and display the correct fields for that effect when you go back in

As @walt.farrell and @carl123 have mentioned, this is indeed frustrating and hopefully this is behaviour that will be improved, however if using the main FX panel, i.e., by clicking the FX icon for a layer in the layers panel, instead of putting a check mark against the relevant FX (where the options to the right don't change), instead, click the FX name. This will then show the correct options for the respective FX and as soon as you make any adjustments to that FX it will automatically add a check mark to make the FX active.

I must agree that the way fx work is not particularly intuitive.  If you tick an fx, I would expect that fx settings to be selected at the same time. It's similar to the Adjustments Panel, which is also a two step operation. First you select the adjustment, but then you also have to select an option. - Why not just load the default setting, which you can then change, if you want to? In the fx panel you rarely apply the fx without making some sort of adjustment to the settings, so why do you need an extra click to do so?

Because this method was often requested (rightly so) and subsequently implemented

Agreed.
But it's been always like this, so it's not a 2.1.0 regression or bug.

I know this, but I cannot see any logical reason for implementing it! As it is now you always have to select the adjustment, then click on default or a preset. If the default was automatically selected, you could still choose a preset, if you prefer!

We're getting off topic here, but alas:
From what I recall, if you had already applied an Adjustment preset, clicking into the panel again would reset your current setting by auto-applying the "Default".
Or if no Adjustment was selected, it would add an Adjustment layer while all you wanted was just to look up your presets without applying them.
So… good riddance. :)

It sounds like you'd be happier applying adjustments using the icon on the Layers panel. It works the way you're asking for.
