Not so for me on my Mac. The Crop Tool always defaults to Unconstrained (what I think the OP means by unrestricted).

Clicking on the Presets gear icon brings up a menu of all the custom & builtin presets but even if I select one of them, the tool reverts to Unconstrained each time I click on it.

Maybe a Mac vs. Windows difference?

... In Windows, at least the option selected from Presets is remembered for further use of the Crop tool, but this is also not OK - it cannot be returned to the default Unconstrained state. So if I select something from the Presets, then I can never return Unconstrained as the default state - I always have to click on Reset in the context toolbar. So it would be handy if Serif added the Unconstrained option to the prepared Presets/formats.

See menu File -> Preferences -> Tools -> Move Tool Aspect Constrain:

Constrain by default (or do not constrain by default or Automatic (based on selection)) has no effect on start behavior new Foto.

It always starts with Unconstrained.

That option is (as it says) for the Move Tool.

It is not related to, and has no effect on, the Crop Tool.

Does this persist after quitting & restarting AP?

For me on my Mac, no preset is ever remembered -- every time I select the Crop Tool, it starts with the "Unconstrained" setting, whether or not I selected & used a preset the last time I used it.

So this seems to be a difference in how the Windows & Mac versions work, at least if it is working on my Mac like it does for other Mac users.

I have the same experience as R C-R. Nothing is remembered, much like how my brain works. Always get the Unconstrained when choosing the Crop tool.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

It's probably something like this option, which for incomprehensible reasons is implemented only in Win, but not in Mac.

I am not sure the circled option would affect the crop tool's behavior even on Windows, but I certainly cannot find any option in the Mac version of AP that affects this tool's behavior.

Of course, there is no any related with the Crop tool, nor did I mention it anywhere - notice, what part of your post I am responding to. I mentioned this only as another difference between implementing Affinity applications for Win and for Mac.

What differences do you think?
Apparently there is a difference between Win and Mac applications (unfortunately this is sometimes the case, because they are two independent branches), but that doesn't apply to you - you have Win, so he remembers the last choice from Presets, right?

The crop tool in the Develop persona does this, are you using the Develop persona?

If not, please try to do a screen recording of what you see.

Also, are you using the latest version 1.10.4?
