Hello, Pet-Lovers Everywhere in the AffiniVerse … Today’s Question:

What IS the CAT tool and what does it DO?

I've noticed a mysterious little tool in AD10 that calls itself the ‘CAT’ tool. Cute. Interesting. BUT: What does it do, how is it used, and what Unknowns need to become Knowns? I've discovered two (count ’em, two) vids online from AD 1.9 that purport to Disclose The Secrets! of this tool, but shed neither light nor heat on the subject to hand (prolly ’cos they're old(-ish)).

If this tool provides a handy-dandy method of moving / placing the Rotation Point of an object, that would be great - if I knew how to access it. You know, like for moving, say, one star shape around a circle to create a ‘Circle of Stars!’ … if it does more than that, then Win-Win!

Please to be ’splainin' me, Lucy … Thanks in advance.

It will show up on a Friday 13th. It is a bit of fun, a type of software joke.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.5.7 | Affinity Photo 2.5.7 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.7 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

You can also measure things in “Cats” too on a Friday 13th!
But unfortunately you will now have to wait till May 2022 for the next one.
And it will be the only one next year!

You don't have to wait until the next Friday the 13th to use the Cat Tool or use cat units.

For example, at any time you can use the View > Customize Tools menu item & drag the Cat tool into its own slot in the Tools panel.

If you do not want to do that, just hold down the Alt/Option key & click on the multi-shape tool icon (the one with the small triangle at the bottom right corner) & the Cat Tool will appear at the bottom of the popup list of shape tools. It is a bit out of date but https://affinity.help/designer/en-US.lproj/pages/Tools/tools_cat.html explains how to do this.

Cat units can be entered in numeric text fields just like any other -- just type a number followed by "cat," for example "0.5 cat." Make sure you don't leave the original units at the end -- "0.5 cat px" won't work.

Old Bruce / Mark / R C-R … Arrrgh! Thanks for such prompt and fun responses. It's a relief knowing I really won't need to wait for another Friday the 13th (with or without ‘Freddy’). Since other ‘Usefulness’ aspects seem not to have been imparted to the functionality of this tool, I must therefore assume it's like Paul Simon’s ‘One Trick Pony’ … nicht wahr? If so, that’s okay too, ’cos sometimes things are worth doing just for their ‘Cool!’ factor. Thanks again, all …

On Windows it's the Shift key, not Alt.
