RoywithaT
@loukash, perhaps I was too polite in my reply to you, so I will try one more time...this thread is about the technical reason for the masking process to not work. It is inappropriate, and I find it personally offensive, for you to bring in your opinion about my education (or lack of it). Please stop and stay on topic. Their main logo mascot is a drawing by the owner’s sister-the challenge for me was to create designs that stay somewhat true to her original drawing. I have done about a dozen t-shirt designs for them over the years. This set of projects is labels for subscription boxes. Nice to have a back story to the project, helps to gauge replies and pitch skill levels, although I generally try to reply with all readers skill sets in mind as posts can hang around for quite a while as reference posts to help others with similar issues. Like you say, we all have different ways of working and there are always several ways of getting a similar result. iconoclast
Not sure if the problem is solved now, because I only glanced through the thread, but the reason for this problem could possibly also be the Accumulation setting of the brush. If you doubleclick on the brush-preset to open the settings, the Accumulation-slider should be set to 100%.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the results of using this color on a mask to be complete coverage. Having to dive over to cmyk setting to check the k seems like an overly fussy step. But I dunno, haven’t heard from anyone at Affinity on this thread (not that you-all aren’t awesome ;-). I would like to see a comment from Serif, too. Someone should be along at some point By the way, a forum hint: Your attempt to "tag" me did not work. You need to: Type the @ and begin typing the user's name. Wait for the popup list of matching usernames. Select a name from the list. Any other approach just gets you normal text, without the actual tagging effect. You can tell if it is right by the highlighting you'll get. Here's a tag for you, as an example: @RoywithaT. RoywithaT
@iconoclast thanks for thought. I was using pen brush, so yes, 100% accumulation. Setting K to 100% in the color panel was the solution. Still dk why K wouldn’t be 100% when the basic black swatch was selected, but, whatevers…it’s all working. Thank you again for the assist. RoywithaT
@firstdefence agreed. I often find someone’s past question resolves my questions. Thank you again for your help! firstdefence

I know of two possibilities: #1 is an RGB black swatch which will be a Rich Black when used in a CMYK document. #2 is a CMYK black swatch, with C=M=Y at 0, and Black at 100. I think there should be some indication of that, perhaps with a tooltip popup, right there in the UI, because as it is it is far from obvious. walt.farrell 1 Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.4.2 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 Affinity Photo 1.10.8; Affinity Designer 1.108; & all 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.
