MadMinstrel
I start the app, I see the splash screen, the process dies. No message or anything, just goes kaput. Things I have tried: - restarting my computer - repairing the app using the installer - uninstalling and reinstalling - deleting the Photo folder in %appdata% (After that last one, it didn't crash immediately. It showed me the EULA, then crashed.) - uninstalling 1.9.2 and installing 1.9.1. Still crashes. - uninstalling 1.9.1 and installing 1.9.0. Still crashes. - updating my graphics drivers (to nvidia 466.47. still crashes.) - running Windows update to download the latest patches. still crashes. - uninstalling 1.9.0 and installing 1.8.5. Works, but I'd rather not be using such an old version. I'm out of ideas. Help? Wasn't sure what would be useful, so I've attached my entire CrashReports folder. If that contains any sensitive data (like my serial), I'd ask the mods to kindly remove it after downloading a copy. Edit: I have just noticed that Designer 1.9.2 also crashes in the same way. Publisher 1.8.5 that I haven't updated in a while works fine however. CrashReports.zip
walt.farrell
Possibly you're having an issue with having Hardware Acceleration enabled. It sounds like you may not be getting far enough into the program to look at Preferencers, Performance, though in order to verify that or turn it off. So you might try one of these: Or MadMinstrel 1 Quote -- Walt Designer, Photo, and Publisher V1 and V2 at latest retail and beta releases PC: Desktop: Windows 11 Pro, version 23H2, 64GB memory, AMD Ryzen 9 5900 12-Core @ 3.00 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Laptop: Windows 11 Pro, version 23H2, 32GB memory, Intel Core i7-10750H @ 2.60GHz, Intel UHD Graphics Comet Lake GT2 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU. iPad: iPad Pro M1, 12.9": iPadOS 17.4.1, Apple Pencil 2, Magic Keyboard Mac: 2023 M2 MacBook Air 15", 16GB memory, macOS Sonoma 14.4.
MadMinstrel
I have changed the <UseHardwareAcceleration> flag to False, but it still crashes in the same way. Thanks for trying though.

MadMinstrel
Nope. I don't have any of those installed on my system, and nVidia's Optimize for Compute Performance driver option seems to be gone as well. Ron P.
Komatös
@MadMinstrel Can you please look into %appdata%\affinity\photo\1.0\crashreports\reports. To do so press Windows key+R and enter the bold text string. If you have purchased the app in the Windows store, change the '1,0' to '1.0 (store). There should be one or more .dmp file. The file with the latest timestamp will be fine. Attach them to the posting. You also can try to install the latest beta. You'll find them here in the beta forums. MadMinstrel
@Komatös I have already attached the crash reports (and the .dmp files in there) to the opening post from the start. I installed the beta as you suggested. It crashes the same way.
RichardMH
Might be worth trying the nvidia studio driver (462.59) rather than the game ready driver. In theory its more stable.
Komatös
@MadMinstrel I had overlooked the zip file, sorry. The bug is caused by a .NET component. Check with sfc /scannow if there are corrupted system files. Press Windows key + R and type sfc /scannow in the input line. Hold down Shift + CTRL and click OK. MadMinstrel
Same thing happened as when I deleted the whole Photo folder as I mentioned in the beginning. It showed me the EULA, which I accepted, then crashed. The 1.0 folder was recreated.
Komatös
I am running out of solutions. But he who gives up loses. Press Windows key + R, type cmd , hold down Shift + Ctrl and click OK. C:\Windows\system32\ appears. Check if there are errors in the registry: Copy Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth by right-clicking and paste into the prompt by right-clicking. Scan data sets (partition) for errors Copy Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth with a right-click and paste it into the command prompt with a right-click. Scan Windows 10 for errors using Windows Update and have it repaired: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth If you have carried out the repair with Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, you can run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth again for safety's sake. MadMinstrel
@Komatös Apparently the system is fine: You mentioned a .net component is at fault. Perhaps it would be a good idea to determine which one?

Komatös
The only thing I can think of is to completely uninstall the GPU drivers with the Display Driver Uninstaller and then reinstall the drivers. MadMinstrel
I have now. Unfortunately it didn't help. All this wouldn't be so frustrating it there were a hint of some kind. How can we determine what in particular is failing?
MadMinstrel
It seems I have resolved the issue. Previously, the software was installed in the default installation directory, in Program Files. It now runs after I've changed the install location to a different folder. My guess is that it was some kind of NTFS permission issue perhaps? Those folders have all kinds of silly restrictions on modern Windows. But that's just my speculation. Chris B
