iPad: Move AD files onto Mac?

Recommended Posts

First you need to Save a Copy in work screen or use Save in Project screen. This creates a .afdesign file in a location of your choice. If you saved to Cloud, just Open from cloud on Desktop. If you saved on ipad, access with Files app or Documents app and move it to a suitable location, USB drive or network drive. Or use Airdrop to transfer the file. Lots of options. :)

When I use Save a Copy, I get to give it a new name and I’m given apparent control over where it’s saved to, but when I try to finalize the move, I get a dialog box that says (3 or 4 times) “The Operation is now Permitted.”

So..is there something else required for this method to work in the iPad’s eyes? ;-)

Also, nowhere to be found is the word, “Share” anywhere in the AD interface; it is mentioned in detail in the Help File. I believe I have the latest version of Affinity Designer for iPad; can’t get the iPad to tell me *which* version number it is. Why’s everything have to be so hidden and tip-top secret? ;-)

When you open AP on iPad, click setting, Preferences and the version number will be displayed lower left bottom of screen.

It’s version 1.7.3

does 1.7.3 have sharing, etc enabled?

When you select Export, Share is located bottom left, next screen.

Bottom left on my ipad, but it doesn’t let me share as afdesign; only as pdf or various raster formats

Did DM1 post above fail?  Sorry I corrected post from right to left but I think DM1 is your answer.  I know share works for AP.

DM1’s instructions are correct.

See if this helps, assuming you have signed into iCloud on your iPad.

This works right up til the moment I want to hit Save (into the location it lets me navigate to) - but then I get a warning that the Operation can not be permitted. I don’t get why this operation can not be permitted. This situation is feeling a bit lobster-trappy at the moment... ;-)

Test the process by starting a new file and then Saving a Copy in workscreen. If this works there must be an issue with the sandboxed file. If it doesn't work....  maybe an issue with the AD installation?

In settings, do you have Save to local IPad or Save to Cloud set? This is the location where the three bar Save on Project screen saves an .afdesign file to.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble here! Could you please confirm, what location are you attempting to Save to? Can you successfully export to this location?

I haven’t done much experimentation but after doing the incremental iPad os upgrade to 13.3.1- I was able to successfully Save a Copy into a location of my choice within Files this morning.

it is very concerning that not having upgraded to that incremental upgrade would virtually destroy file management on this expensive device. One day an upgrade will happen which my ipad can’t upgrade to and I’ll have a very expensive doorstop on my desk.

Thanks for letting me know - I'll pass this information back to our QA team as we usually keep various iOS versions installed on our iPads here, so we'll look into what may be causing this.

I certainly hope not!

Me too. At this moment it’s very unclear which things iPad os has governance over, whether you’re “in the app” or not.

Did you check under settings - privacy - files and folders and ensured that you have granted access to Afffiny as that would also affect access to files.

I did not check that; however, after allowing the upgrade, the save a. Copy into a folder of my choosing was successful.

I haven’t viewed or altered any permissions on my iPad.

Curious though, that the “Affinity Designer” folder in the FIles app - presumably created by Affinity Designer itself, owing to the icon on the folder, and with the blessing of iPad OS 13, should be having a snit about files being written to it by the app which created said file, and within the OS which hosts / houses said application and files.

There is another thread reporting same issue that was fixed by a 'reboot' of the iPad. Always worth doing a reset under these circumstances. (Reminds me of Windows os, where a reboot resolved 90% of issues.😀).

I’m going to have to include that in my bag of tricks. For some reason, I don’t think of the iPad as something requiring “booting,” but that’s obviously a wrong perception.

I rarely turn off my iPad. I sleep it instead.

Thank you for adding this excellent tip!
