Photo Workbook Problem

Recommended Posts

Page 331:

Trying to add texture.jpg as instructed. Think I did something wrong:  Cant get to it in Downloads or as  layer. Tried downloading entire set again, and all is still greyed out.

Set displays properly in Finder. How do I get back to starting point with Texture.jpg?

Thanks

photo_core_skils-2 is Directory/Folder, and its content is not displayed. Click the arrow in left, to see it.

Never mind. I can't follow your response. I will just move on.

In the screenshot you posted, compare the entry for photo_core_skills-2 with the entry below it for search_the_woods. Both are directories, but the contents of search_the_woods are displayed because you have clicked on the arrow to the left of the name, to "expand" the directory and see its contents.

You have not done that with photo_cores_skills-2. Do that (click the arrow to the left) and you should find the resources you need.

In screenshot greyed all Files. Try to select a file and then open it.

What @Pšenda meant in this earlier post is to click the 'reveal' triangle on the Core Skills folder to show its contents:

OK folks. Thanks for your patience. However:

1. Finding texture from Place> Searchthewoods is greyed out in screenshot

2. Finding texture in Finder shows it greyed out but clicking triangle on core skills reveals content. Selective content is shown in other workbook downloads but not all files are active (I think files I have not opened in workbook are active).

3. Tried moving greyed texture under Text layer per workbook. That closes the active window and brought up texture as separate window as background.

Lost!

Try first making sure that the "SEARCH THE WOODS" text layer is not selected when you use the File > Place menu item to open the Texture.jpg file.

I don't know why the workbook does not make this clear but if the text layer is selected the file will be greyed out.

Perhaps back in 1.6 (when the book was developed) it wasn't possible to Place text files, as it is now?

With the text layer selected the program will be looking for text files, not image files, but that behavior is new with 1.7 I think.

On my Mac, with a text layer selected only files with a .txt or .rtf extension can be selected. Everything else is greyed out. Are you seeing the same?

On Windows it's basically the same. The File Explorer box that the Affinity applications put up when a text layer is active will be looking for text files (which includes RTF):

image.png.ad78f2b5538c940df823cea92e401d48.png

However, on Windows the user can change the filtering by typing, e.g. *.jpg into the "File name" field and pressing enter. The list will then refresh to show jpg files instead of txt or rtf files.

But this is new with 1.7, because in 1.6 File > Place supported only image files and it didn't matter what was selected when using File > Place.

File Explorer box

Good thing that Win Explorer displays the file extensions of filtered files. It is immediately clear what type of file you want to insert using Place.

Yes. Selecting text layer was the problem. Thanks to all.

Unless I am missing something, there is no equivalent for this on Macs, just a search field that if for example I insert "jpg" or any variation thereof, filters out everything so the search results are empty. :(

Did you try it as (specifically, but without the quotes) "*.jpg" ?

It's possible that Mac doesn't allow this capability, but if it does work it would probably have to use some kind of wildcard character like * to match a set of unknown characters. Just putting in "jpg" probably wouldn't work.

Yes. Also, wildcards are not needed in the search field because typing something like "jpg" or ".jpg" (without the quotes) offers a choice of filename or file 'kind' results:

238247758_searchchoice.jpg.4a4103634833f3b19d7f8c0a520deb3c.jpg

I tried every variant I could think of, but no combination including with & without wildcards, period prefixes, all caps, JPEG, etc. showed any search results.
