  1. Hello everyone! I have opened this thread with the intention of recommending an improvement in geometry tools, generally I have used Adobe illustrator and corel Draw although more corel draw than illustrator xD in fact by the simplicity of their tools especially those of fusion and trimming, I explain... Having two or more objects and wanting to make an intersection is usually the area where the intersection is formed and the rest is eliminated, isn't it? in corel the intersection creates a new object (of that intersection) leaving intact the two selected elements, this is very useful to illustrate human figure where sometimes we do not want to lose the elements and rather create a new one. Another tool and I think that of the best is the back less front and less front behind, usually seems absurd, say (hey but for that I can place the object in front and subtract it from the back, but believe me the practicality of having two buttons summarizes a few steps and is quite comfortable. and maybe I say it from the perspective of a user who uses mostly coreldraw, but every designer who has tried those tools feels that all other programs should have the same function. (that's what I said when I tried several corel things and decided to change my software) affinity has a great power!! ahhh and forgot to recommend you to use flat icons, I don't know why but I think the user experience could improve a little with them. Greetings!
  2. Hi, just a quick question: Could anyone confirm if the name for the Geometry icon label is the same now for the Mac and PC versions? Formerly they had different names "Geometry" for Mac and "Operations" for Windows. I am on a mac, so I'd need to know if this is now consistent or if I should prevent users about this when explaining the UI. Thanks!
  3. Hi. I would like to know if there is anything in Affinity designer like the Adobe Illustrators transform effect? (See video below) I am wanting to make complex geometric patterns. I know about power duplicate in affinity but it seems like there is far much more control with the transform tool in Illustrator, plus it saves a lot of time. I have posted an example video below from Adobe Illustrator, this is what I am looking to do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCwmEfCsPdw&t=328s Can any one point me in the right direction? Or are we limited to power duplicate in Affinity designer/photo? Any ideas/help will be appreciated! Thank you for your time. Dan.
  4. Howdy friends! I was building a few vector shapes for a design and playing with the Geometry options to "knock out" overlapping parts of the shapes, etc. At some point I inadvertently hit the "XOR" function in the Geometry toolbar, and … well, it brought up a slowly pulsating "Xor" progress bar on top of the window. There's no option to cancel or dismiss it; I can't edit or do anything with the document while it's there; and I've tried Escape, Return, control-C, command-C, option-C, and a bunch of other keystrokes to try to kill the process. It's been running for several minutes now … I selected a few objects but I don't think it was anything THAT complex to take so long to figure out? I could kill the app, but … well, that would lose a few minutes work, and … is this normal? Thanks!
  5. I posted a separate thread about issues with a drawing that disappeared when I performed ExpandStrokes/Add/Divide. I tried a completely new drawing and when I try the same sequence, the Geometry Add action enters an infinite loop and never completes. I tried on the Mac and the same thing happened as well. Has something changed in this area recently? It’s kind of unworkable now... blob-06.afdesign
  6. The algorithms for some of the geometry tools seem to be slightly off when calculating where the finishing shapes should be. In the video, I placed a blue circle under the red one to show that the combined shapes to be divided before I do it don't match the combined shapes after I hit "Divide." geometry_tool_problem1.mp4
  7. Hi all, I am trying to create a drop shadow for text but when it comes to subtracting the layers needed that overlap, both layers delete. I have read a few posts on here, with replies from moderator MEB (QA Support) but none seem to be able to verify my problem in particular. I have expanded stroke of outline text to shapes instead of lines as to not incur a boolean operation, but even still I cannot seem to get the two layers that are both shapes to subtract from each other and be left with a sweet ass drop shadow to my text. I have followed along to a few tutorials by 7th Season Studios on youtube but those tutorials are from the older version. If someone would be able to help me and even suggest some channels on youtube for designer tutorial channels of the latest 2019 version I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you very much for your time and your help.
  8. I'm running into a problem when making an intersecting compound. Basically, the German Flag seems to shift to the point where you can only see the bottom third or so (see video). I've used this function many times and have never seen this before. Affinity_Designer_6_29_2019_10_03_10_PM.mp4

  10. Hi I’m working on an illustration and trying to turn all the lines into shapes so I can colour them, I’m doing as I usually would and expanding the stroke > then in geometry tools click add but when I do that the add loading screen appears and then gets stuck on that screen, it works fine on some expanded shapes when adding them others it doesn’t. I’m selecting only a small part of my illustration to do this too it’s not the whole illustration which would likely take time as it’s more complex, but surely it should be able to work on complex shapes too shouldn’t it? Look forward to your reply. FCD01CA7-3E54-46AD-BCD7-C4A0AD67B6F7.MOV
  11. Hi, I was working on a project and attempted to use the Geometry Add feature in Affinity Designer, but have encountered an issue. Please reference the attached image file for an example of my issue. The feature works just fine when I add a shape to the top of my a rectangle, however, when I add the same shape to the bottom of the rectangle and click Add nothing happens. I've messed around and tried a few different things, but to no avail thus far.
  12. Hi guys, First of all. Thanks for an awesome programme - which I have started to get more and more familiar with. I am currently working on making different geometric designs, and was wondering how you would, say divide a circle into equal parts, in a more easy way than making each separate line by yourself? This would save me a lot of work, and I really hope there is a intuitive way of doing this. Just for the record, I´m a newbie into graphics and was formerly frightened by the complexity of previous programs and have taken the leap with affinity - be gentle in your advices :) Thanks in advance!

    Geometry (boolean) tools

As it seems at this point there is no geometry tools (boolean) in publisher. Is this a possibility in future versions? I find it very useful for modeling image containers, shapes , etc… and is a tool I use a lot on InDesign. I hope this could be easy to implement, as the tool already exist on Designer and shouldn't be very different on Publisher (happy hope)
  14. Hi everyone, I spent around 1 hrs trying to figure out how to solve this. When using the Geometry feature, after the Subtract action the rectangle remains an object portion, like a line. As you can see I had to create 3 more steps instead 1, any idea why it happened? Thank you Affinity_bug.mp4
  15. Hey Affinity Experts, I have been trying to erase a top border on two combined custom shapes. One shape is dark suit jacket while the other shape is a white shirt shape on top of black suit jacket shape. My problem is that when I layer the shapes a very thin black outline remains from black shape. See example. How can I remove this black top outline? Do I have to erase it or is there a way to layer the shapes that causes the black border line to disappear at overlap. Thanks!
  16. Hello there, Affinity-lovers! Tonight I saw an illustration of an surfboard on the internet. And, when zooming in on that surface I saw an very interesting pattern, just like a fabric in black and grey... My try to replicate this in Designer for iPad was to make three grouped object with a lot of parallel lines (made by pen tool and a grid/snapping)... I thought I could use the Geometry functions in the app to “cut out” my above layed object and maintain the nice fabriclike pattern (had applied an overlay layer effect just to see the pattern thru my object)... But, there’s a but, I just can’t to cut out just my object with that nice pattern applied...? Any suggestions on that? Is it possible at all? See my teo screenshots: thank’s in advance!

  18. Hi Affinity Designer Users ! I redesign a logo for one of our customers and need some help. I have to subtract the red area from the blue... as I subtract it, Affinity Designer just subtract "HWABEN", but "SC" stays blue and is not subtracted. What can I do ? I really need help ! Thanks in advance. Best regards Lucas
  19. Hi, I'm new to Affinity Designer and Photo, bought them last year, using both tools to develop my job as an Environmental Engineer. It's possible to develop a spherical grid or geometrical grid manager to draw worlds like Lazy Nezumi software? Thank you!
  20. In this short tutorial I demonstrate the Geometry operations (add, subtract, intersect, divide, combine) in Affinity Designer 1.6.0 (destructively and non-destructively) with some samples. Keep on drawin' Norbert

    Geometry

Hi I have been looking for a tutorial on the use of the geometry tool. Can anyone advise on its use?
  22. I often use geometry layer to mask (clip) other layers. Unfortunately there seems to be no possibility to mask/clip everything inside the geometry. It would be great to be able to invert geometry layers without rasterizing them.
  23. I have a simple shape (collection of lines drawn with the smart pen tool) and a line drawn vertically down this shape. I simply want to just trim off the surplus part of the shape. When I select both the shape (curves) and the line (again, all drawn using the pen tool), press ALT, and then select 'Add' on the geometry option something strange happens. The long way around this is to simply draw the end segment I want, but I want the shape to be nice and clean without worrying about snapping to all the anchor points around it. What's the simple way of trimming off surplus curves to a shape?
  24. I spent the past two hours reducing a logo from a billion separate elements to three (white, light, dark) for vinyl printing. But this shouldn't take as much effort as it did. I couldn't find a simple way to 'flatten' this image, so I had to manually add/subtract/divide many elements many times. The outermost line and white background are not a problem, simply select everything and add. But the darkest shade is made up entirely of outlines of shapes such as the fries. So I cannot simply add those together as it will create one big clump. I also can't just make them all outlines and transparent centers because you'd see the underlying layers. So for each fry i had to: -expand stroke -copy the inside -copy the shape and make transparent (so you only have the stroke) -subtract the stroke from the inside. -subtract the result from the original shape -subtract all the higher layers from the original shape Does anyone know a decent workflow for this type of work in Affinity Designer? I also reckon this is something that can be done algorithmically. At least in the sense that we should be able to divide the visual end result in contiguous blobs of one color. That means the dark green would be 1 element, and the white and light green about two dozen islands each. I'd still have to manually group those into one element but it'd already be much closer to what the endresult would be.
  25. Just as the title says, in Designer the divide function makes a fine line between the two divided objects. I think it's intentional but I'd like to get rid of the line. I know I can do it via the move tool but then I'd have to make some precise adjustments. A check box to disable the line would be a good addition. Or perhaps if an option is already there then please tell me where can I find it. Example - https://image.prntscr.com/image/ZsadZxvbSPuSIoDtZBBjJg.png
