  1. The closest I can find in the Help guide is the Pen Tool in either "Pen" Mode or "Smart" Mode, but I'm not very skilled (if anti-skilled were a thing, I'd use that) at using the Pen Tool. Is there a "pre-fabricated" tool like what Illustrator or iDraw has for those of us falling into the "Artistically Deficient" category? ;)
  2. I have an issue with the Add operation in comparison to Illustrator. As of now, I don't believe there is a feature that allows us to select by fill or color, this prohibits me from being able to select only the black infill and then add or merge them together as one shape. In Illustrator, I can select by fill color, select "unite" in the pathfnder window (which I believe is the equivialent to "add" in affinity) my design comes out perfect. With affinity, since there is no option to select on by fill color, I have to select everything, then select "add" which fills in portions of the object with solid black.
  3. Hi, Affinity Forum! I recently purchased AD and AP to scratch an itch and start doing more of my own graphics design work. As I become accustomed to the software and develop my design skills, I lean on stock graphics websites for things I can't yet build myself. The problem is that I'm having a very hard time finding graphics and illustrations that can be reliably managed by AD/AP. It didn't take me long to figure out that free graphics are out, which is just as well because those sites are a nightmare to navigate. I also found that with many inexpensive graphics, AD would either report that the file doesn't contain a PDF stream so it can't be opened, or it would automatically assign a color palette to the file and it would look too distorted to use. Based on my experience, I think the problem isn't with AD/AP but my graphics sourcing. I've had a little bit of luck with VectorStock, but I haven't found any websites that track the kind of compatibility features that AD needs (like a PDF stream for .ai files). Has anyone come up with guidelines for AD/AP-safe stock graphics or identified any sites that are consistently reliable? Shutterstock seems like the obvious choice, but I want to see if there are any less expensive alternatives, or at least any sites that sell assets individually. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!
  4. This is a feature that has likely already been requested to be added, but I searched the forums and didn't notice anyone posting this same sort of request. In CC 2019, a REALLY nice gradient feature got added to Illustrator called the Freeform Gradient. The way you use it is you add different points for the gradient to follow. You can make them different colors, make gradient paths using points, and even adjust how much those colors spread from those points. Unfortunately, Designer doesn't have this feature yet and I would really like to see it implemented soon because it seems like such a nice way to make gradients. There are also gradient meshes, but it seems like Designer doesn't have these either, even though these seem a bit harder to work with on average. I don't use Illustrator currently, but I have in the past and I think Affinity Designer lacks some of the features that Illustrator does. There are a couple more things that I can think of that I don't see an option for in Designer, but there is one for in Illustrator. I can make 1 or 2 separate posts about those, though.
  5. I have a lot of Illustrator files that have elements (assets) outside of the main canvas. When I try to open these in Affinity Designer, everything outside of the canvas gets permanently clipped and removed, leaving me with only objects that are visible (or partially visible) on canvas (they can't be made visible with View > View Mode > Clip to Canvas). I need to import/open these files preserving all data, is there any way?
  6. On the A.I. file, you can see in the above menu that the text stroke is 4 pt. Over to the right, in the Layers, column, you see only the selected text block. (There are NO outlines...) After importing the ai file into Affinity Designer, everything "looks" fine, however the STROKE border has been eliminated from the Text itself, and has been converted into separate outlines for each letter. Look at the Layers column and you will see that I have selected the text, "Hagia Sophia" (blue highlight). You will also see that stroke width is 0 pt (not 4 pt.) Above the text selection are separate outlines for each letter of that text. Those are the "strokes" that have been removed from the text and converted to outlines. (See more below...) To demonstrate what I mean, I toggled off the visibility of the Text, and you can see that what is left are the outlines that have been converted from the original text. When I click on the outlines, voila!, there we see the 4 pt stroke in the stroke column to the right. The current way you do it would be okay if all I never wanted to revise the image but that, of course, is why I would import my ai files into Designer . . . so that I can revise them. Even on this simple grahic image, it took quite awhile to revise the text. It seems that you already can translate the stroke values from the original ai file so, rather than creating a new outline for each letter, couldn't you add the stroke value to the text of the converted Designer file? Thank you for hearing me out.
  7. Hi. I would like to see all of the Affinity products have optical kerning similar to what Adobe Illustrator has. Thanks. P.S. I'm going through the process of switching to Affinity from Adobe. CM
  8. OK... this concerns Designer for windows. I do a promotional calendar every year for my business. Slategroup in texas does the printing for me.(and I recommend them HIGHLY) They have numerous templates on their website, and the one I use is the Illustrator 8.5/11 calendar. I like designer very much, and would love it if I could transition over... So, I have a couple of issues. 1. I can open an Illustrator file, but I can't save it back to Illustrator. I could export to PDF or EPS, but my preference would be to keep it as an illustrator file. I have similar issues with Affinity Photo. 2. and this one is more complicated. The calendar consists of Cat pictures that I take for the local shelter. The template has individual artboards for 28 pages; front and back covers, 13 calendar grids, and 13 essentially blank pages for pictures. The calendar grids are pretty spare, black on white with Arial text. I use these as a starting point, making some graphic changes, using a different typeface and then putting a low saturation gradient background in to add some texture. Making these changes is easy in Illustrator, less so in Designer. What I need to be able to do is select all the text on one of the grids, and change the font and font sizes. Otherwise I'm stuck changing 365 days of dates one at a time. Here's where it get really weird. The other day as I was fussing around, I was able to do just that, select all the text on an artboard and make all the needed adjustments. Today, I am losing my mind trying to repeat that. So, I am throwing myself at your mercy... Thanks in advance John Fischer
  9. I'm working in affinity for last 6 months now and I despise Illustrator. I can't stop talking about how anti-intuitive is Illustrator. But they have an undoubtedly nice feature called package. It saves the raw file, the fonts involved and other things plus a report in a folder. Can we do the same in Affinity somehow? That report document is very important when we work for clients or with other designers to know what kind of colour space and font and etc etc was used on the specific project.
  10. Hi, This must have been already discussed, but I couldn't find where : When I import an illustrator file with multiple artboards, I can't manage to choose the one I want to place. Is there a way to do that ? Thanks.
  11. Hi, Just a quick question: The roadmap specifies "Mesh warp/distort tool", but would this include Illustrator-style "Arc" distorts? This function is absolutely essential, for example, for creating stickers for bottles or jars whose sides aren't perfectly parallel. Cheers for taking the time.
  12. Hi, I've just downloaded the Affinity Designer trial, and am quite impressed. However, I am a design student and my school computers have adobe programs. As far as I can tell, I can't find any way of exporting Designer files as Ai files? I can see the option to export as psd, and I've tried to open Ai files using Designer with no problems - but I wanted to check whether there was a way of exporting to Ai that I had missed. Thanks
  13. Importing a PDF or (the same file as) AI-File with some gradients bring a very disturbed result. Also the exported PDF looks like the preview on the screen. See attached screenshot. If I resave the .AI as EPS and import this to AP 1.7.0.293, the preview on the screen isnt very nice but close on the original - the exported PDF looks like it should. If someone of serif needs the .ai, please PM or answer on this thread.
  14. Hi, in 'Designer' is there any way to convert text to outlines (paths)? It's a function that I've use all the time in Illustrator & I'm praying it can be done in AD. Essentially I want to be able to edit each character as a path, so I can customise them.
  15. Hey guys I just recently made the switch from Adobe ecosystem to Affinity Designer & Photo because i'm not trying to shell out $600 a year for the rest of my life. I'm getting myself adjusted with Designer right now, but i hit a snag. I can't seem to Add/Remove nodes to existing paths like you could in Illustrator. I've tried searching in Help, but nothing comes up. Is this feature not currently available in Designer? If that's the case, then when can we expect this option in a future update? I only ask because it's something I use often. Thanks in advance for your help and time.
  16. I have been using Adobe Illustrator exclusively for years in my design process and have recently begun to use Affinity Designer. Unfortunately, this means that most of my design pieces are in the .ai format. Is there a way to bring these over to a .afdesign format while preserving all of me design aspects?
  17. This feature is from illustrator (i used cs4). this is very powerful features which allow to re-color any part of an object: symbols, shapes, groups etc' It shows the user all the color used, and let him modify any of them. saves the user time of selecting objects and sub object individually. Attaching pic. also the ability to make a keyboard short cut to it is vey important. I'm very miss this thing. Thanks, Rotem.
  18. When I open an illustrator file in affinity publisher beta on my mac, the effects added to objects (drop shadows, etc.) in illustrator are not showing in the publisher beta. Is this by design? Is there a way to get the effects to show up in publisher beta when opening an illustrator file?
  19. I am considering switching from Adobe. I run my own graphic design business and currently use Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator daily. Would the Affinity products be sufficient and would I be able to open / import PSD, INDD and AI files into this software?
  20. I'm brand new to Affinity Design and I'm having teething problems trying to do certain things I'm used to doing in Adobe Illustrator. For example the custom brush, or a brush that is thin in a point at one end only and responds to pen pressure. Also I used to be able to draw this out neatly with a line from the pen tool and then drag the brush from the menu of brushes to instantly change the pen line to this stroke effect. What's the best way to customise this type of brush? (The pictures come from this custom brush tutorial suitable for Adobe Illustrator http://www.bittbox.com/illustrator/illustrator-how-to-make-custom-swooshes-swirls-and-curls ) Another question while on topic, I already have some brush files suitable for illustrator but wont open in Affinity, is there anyway they can work or be converted to work? Thanks
  21. In this video, we have shown how to export EPS files in the Affinity Designer for Coreldraw and Illustrator.

  23. For those of you who needs Pantone colors support in Affinity Designer before the Serif team release an official support in it, here is a trick you can do. Firstly, you need an Adobe Illustrator licence to be able to do this, or install a demo version of Illustrator. Then you need to install SwatchBooker. http://www.selapa.net/swatchbooker/ Or you compile it yourself to get a Mac version, or you use it under Linux, or use it with Windows. Personally, I installed the Windows version into a CrossOver bottle and it works out of the box. Launch SwatchBooker Editor, in the File menu, select Open and choose one of your Pantone library in Illustrator. Then in the File menu, select Save as and select *.ase for the file format. Launch Affinity Designer and go to the swatches panel, click on the menu and choose import palette, as system or software, as you want. Select your exported *.ase color library. And that's it, you have loaded in Affiinty Designer your Pantone colors library.
  24. I have Illustrator CS3 documents where I have work/designs off on the pasteboard (canvas). Is there a way to get to this work/designs when I open them in ADesigner? I realize this is quite the app version jump. Normally I'd just open Illustrator and adjust all those documents so I can see everything in ADesigner, however, due to crappy circumstances I cannot open Illustrator.
