    Hi Roberta,
If you set the Display to Metal, untick Use only integrated GPU and tick Enable Metal compute acceleration does it still lag/overheat?

    Solved!
I remembered that I had attached the PDF to this topic so I dowloaded it and tried again.
At first try Affinity P simply didn't open it, no dialogue box etc
Then I opened it with acrobat, simply saved with another name and now it works exactly as Merde and Phil were saying

With some PDF application, you can simply right-click and copy-paste the image in an AD document. Or use the file > new from clipboard option.

Sorry, Roberta, I can't see what the problem is with this particular PDF file. It opens in several other apps, just not in Affinity!
I can only think that there's something about the way your scanner creates the PDF that Affinity doesn't like, but there doesn't seem to be anything actually wrong with it.
The best I can suggest, if you can't re-scan the drawing, is to install Irfanview or Sage Thumbs (both free) and convert the PDF to another file format. (PNG, TIFF or JPG).
(Really like your drawing style, by the way.)

I see that Circle, Square, etc. Marquee Selection Tools have anti-alias in the menu, but when you use Flood selection and brush selection, they don't. Any reason why? Normally anti-alias is the preferred way to select, but there is no way to "enable" this for these two selection modes.

Does Window > Clean Up Floating Windows help?
Sorry about the earlier confusion—I thought you were on Windows for some reason!

    Hey Roberta,
1 - This has been mentioned and logged numerous times before. The reply back from the developers has always been 'You have changed the brushes preset so it is no longer the same brush. Whilst I can accept that, I do think that it would be nice to have some sort of indication as to which brush you were using—especially if you're loading up the document the next day and you've completely forgotten which one you were using.
Another suggestion was to add the brushes you're using for the current project into their own group so you can more easily identify the one you need. I do appreciate this could potentially be a bit time consuming.
2 - I believe a lot of work is planned to go into the Symmetry feature so this is likely to change. The issue you have mentioned was logged with the developers the same day we first got this feature as it immediately became a problem for us during early testing.
3 - You can go to View > Float All and position them accordingly. Unless I'm mistaken, I cannot see a way of getting the app to automatically and neatly position the windows for you so I might pop an improvement request over to dev.
    Thanks!

    Hello!
I recently started using the beta and here are some of my suggestion:
    1) Brush selection: whenever I select a brush but then I change the size, the selection disappears and there's no way to know which brush I am using (or is there and I don't know where to look?)
I think there should always be an indication of the brush currently in use even if you change size or hardness or any other spec.
    2) With the new Symmetry feature, I noticed that if I go too close to the center, instead of drawing, it selects the irradiating line and moves it. It would be nice to have an additional button to 'fix' the symmetry guide so that it's impossible to accidentally move it instead of drawing.
    3) I noticed that if you have multiple canvas open, you can't detach the windows to (for example) compare two projects or use references.
    Hopefully this is helpful!

    Tried out the beta!
The smudge brush tool is much better! I also downloaded the smudge brushes someone posted in a previous topic and with those I have a perfect tool.
Looking forward to the release of the updated AP

I am using Affinity Photo since August 2018 but only recently I have started to do more illustrations and digital art with it.
I've always been using Photoshop before then and I need to say I find Affinity fantastic!
I would like to share some drawings and my latest speedpaint video.
Please let me know if you have any feedback or advice to improve

    Thanks!

Im not sure how useful or good they are, but I made some vector brushes.. useful for me, and if anyone can use them, here you go :-)
i made them for the love of vintage lettering styles, and I use it for backgrounds, like the old Sanborn Maps style..
Anyway, as I’m quite new to brush making, I’m sure they can be improved, and if I do, I’ll update them here :-)
hope it it will be useful for some :-) and they can be downloaded from here..
feel free to give feedback.. good or bad is welcome as long as it is constructive:-)
