debiant reacted to mhz in Won't buy affinity publisher if it is missing:
first of all....duh....they don't make pageplus anymore!!! Second of all if I wanted to use Adobe I would....I prefer Serif products and if you work at Serif and you criticized me you should look up my account and see how many products I have. And of course I know how to make my own labels but without mail/data merge capabilities that ability is a moot point!!

@hum3
Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums
You (and the many others here ) may be pleased to hear that we are currently internally testing picas as a new Affinity unit type. It may take a few iterations to implement perfectly, but soon enough should be what the contributors here are hoping for. It should be available in the next APub beta release due later this week, let us know if it works for you.

Yes definitelly I agree connection to data source for printing x number of same designs with different data on selected fields is a must feature. As well tables with calculations in cells would be good.

Another pageplus user here that regularly uses the mailmerge feature. It's a must have for me, and many others in my organisation (which has about 300 ppX8/X9 users)

debiant reacted to Vanish in CSV Data Merge / Export
One of my tasks requires quickly regenerating a set of images (sometimes hundreds) based on a template. This is currently accomplished either with Adobe Indesign or Adobe Photoshop with Data Merge. I set up a CSV with columns which are attached to layers within the document. There are three options:
1.) Set the Text content of a Layer
2.) Set the Visibility of a Layer On/Off
3.) Set the contents of a Layer to a File
Once you have the layers attached to columns and the CSV imported, you can preview each row, set the display to a specific row and export one/all images based on the data in each row.
I could identify several more options that I would love to have (set the fill color of a layer) but the minimum needed would be Visibility and Text. Unfortunately, I cannot abandon the Adobe products until I have another way to accomplish this merging of data. I have not found any alternative software to accomplish this merging, so I am willing to bet there is a market for it. Inkscape has a plugin that nearly does it, but it is not implemented well and does not work with all shapes.

Just signed up for the forum to say that I'm requesting this feature, too!

I concur with Janwinard’s comment. I’ve been designing and teaching design for many years. Data merging is an extremely powerful and efficient way of managing dynamically changing content. The absence of this feature has been the primary reason I’ve kept from carrying my instruction over from Adobe to Affinity. I see Affinity in many ways potentially giving Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator a run for their money. That is to say with single or one off designs. However, Adobe’s Pipeline and Data nerge features are still a dealbreaker for me.

If it helps, Scribus DOES have this feature implemented by way of a Python script called "Scribus Generator." I mention this because--until Publisher arrives--I'm using Scribus in conjunction with Designer (as they both work with littleCMS for Color Management) for my multipage publication development.
The original page on Scribus Generator is here:
http://www.ekkehardwill.de/sg/
and the GIthub page for it is here (it has since had newer features added to it; the Github page houses the newest incarnation):

Hopefully this helps the community and the Devs.

No merge capabilities as of yet in any Affinity products.

Hi!
I make Racing Bibs for competitions and I'm trying to move away from some of the archaic software that is used in these processes on to newer software options. Adobe Illustrator seems to be one of the only alternatives but their array merge feature is probably one of the most complicated and ineffective things I have ever used.
For those who know what a mail merge is in MS Word where you can print 1 envelope, each with a different name and address on it for each and every envelope, this feature is necessary in a lot of B2C relations. There have been many instances where I would like to have a very creative beautiful document with spot colors, etc have a mail merge feature but I have yet to find a program that has this feature similar to the way the MS Word does.
I am fairly new to Affinity's suite of products and I am trying to do my best to look for this feature and find it on my own but I haven't seen it in Affinity Designer (where it would most likely be) and I am toying with Affinity Publisher (another product that may include features like this) but haven't seen it there either.
Is this a feature that is built in to Designer or being built into Publisher and I am just looking in the wrong places? Or is this function that should become a feature request?
Here's to hoping I can find something amazing or I can turn this into a feature request.
-Thanks!

debiant got a reaction from Josh Mills in [Implemented] Data merge
Just wanted to add, that without data merge. Publisher is also a no go for me. I need it for my workflow, which revolves around rapid paper prototyping using .csv files. My work would be abyssmal without it. It's why several other publishing apps failed to capture my interest. As someone who has purchased both other products in your line, I would ask that this be marked as a high priority feature for a final release. I want to be rid of that other company, and their rental policies, once and for all.
Th other features are great, but without Data/Mail merge, Publisher is unusable for me.

+1 here too. I am really enjoying the beta so far, but this is one critical feature missing.

As I have run out of my daily allocation of reactions to Forum comments (Why? Surely it'easier for the developers to see how many "likes" a comment has rather than having to read loads of "And me's"?), I would like to add my +1 for Data Merge.

Ditto on Data Merge. Also, as long as we're dreaming, being able to link to TXT/tabular content from Google Docs and/or Google Sheets would be UH-MAZING!

Definitely need data merge. Would be ideal to plug in a spreadsheet or csv/tsv file.

Another here for data merge. We use it all the time in PagePlus.

Hello, one more vote for "data merge" tool like in InDesign. I use this function mostly for designing business cards and small catalogs, labels for boxes etc ... Everything, that have same desing and elements, that change always on same places and can be read frome some kind of database.

I use the data merge tool daily to create QR-codes in a batch or load data into a pdf. I think this is not present in the beta build?

Yes Data Merge for filling up templates would be great. Our organisation has an REST-API which can e.g. deliver image urls and various other strings in JSON. Publisher would be great to automate process this data into beautiful templates which then can get printed. :)

+1 for this. This was the first thing I looked for when I opened Publisher.
