A long gap between my last post on this, but Steamcourt is finally wrapped up and was successfully funded on Kickstarter! In the end, we reached enough support to hit some stretch goals and add additional characters. We ended up with twelve characters total, and the reception overall has been really good. All art finished in Affinity Photo, with a few vector support elements done in Designer. Brushes almost exclusively were from the excellent Daub bristle set. Affinity was a joy to use! Find out more on the final game and see more at SteamCourt.com. :)

Here is my latest concept art for a client's top-down game. I was also using the DAUB brushes. They work great! All work done with Affinity Photo. You can see more of these and some of my process on my Artstation profile.

To be honest, I've never tried Affinity Photo for digital painting. I usually work in PS or Manga Studio. But today I was testing some brush settings of Photo and came up with this quick portrait. I've always tried to emulate the traditional mediums when painting digital, so I tend to work my digital paintings with that natural a la prima feel... working in one layer and mixing pencils and 'gouache'.

    Here's the result:

I think I'll use Photo for more digital painting. It runs pretty smooth and fluid. It is pretty fun to create brushes too, very fewer settings compared with other painting software, but at the same time those boundaries makes you create some nice brushes more quickly.

    Hope you all dig it!

Thanks for the feedback, all! Penwiper, good thoughts, I'll probably try to get some of those in revisions. Test prints came out a bit dark too, so I might play with tonal values a bit also.

Without giving too much away, here's another in-progress character piece from the set, with some slight stylistic differences (some folks said they preferred earlier sketched versions of the characters, so I'm testing out some subtle outlines and sketch elements along with the original layers.

Penwiper, the game is coming to Kickstarter soon, so you can follow us at SteamCourt.com until it drops. It's super fun, I can tell you that. :D

Not 100% done, but this is a portion of a new art piece done by commission for an upcoming card game. All painting done in Affinity Photo Beta. So far it's been fantastic with few hiccups. The new beta does seem a bit friendlier to my Wacom as well. :)

More updates will pop up at SteamCourt.com soon!

    Hi Nana,
Designer Beta 1.4.2 beta 5 or RC1 is the same and the most up to date version.
It was already submitted to Apple and should appear soon in the Mac App Store (if everything goes well).

Ah, didn't catch that! I was thinking I was running the most recent beta. Yes, the switch to artboard loss is a lower-priority edge case imho.

On a side, UI-kinda note, are you guys planning on doing an API for scripting/add-ons by third party apps or devs at any point?

    Hi smallreflection,

Just trying to make sure there's no misunderstanding - we now move guides around with their artboards and duplicate them with their artboards, the only thing we don't do (which I have obviously overlooked) is when you create the first artboard in a non-artboard document I am not taking the current guide setup and applying them to the new artboard. Is this such a frequent problem that it can't be worked around (i.e. by just making the artboard in the first place?)

I'll obviously try my best to add this extra and re-upload if I can do it safely, but I just wanted to make sure that you knew the current state of play...

    Thanks,
    Matt

Hey Matt, you forgot to add the *most important* fixes to your list above …  ;)

    - Guides are duplicated with artboards
    - Guides move with artboards

Oh dear, that makes me happy …  :D
    Alex

EDIT There is just one little bug though. Create a document without adding an artboard on creation. Add guides. Choose Artboard Tool and insert artboard from context toolbar. Existing guides are deleted.

Honestly, I believe Matt’s points are very reasonable. Would it really make sense to create a document in a beta version that relies on “state-of-the-art” feature implementations which are not supported by subsequent versions, due to fundamental code changes? In other words, can you imagine a possible use case for a document you would never be able to open again, once the beta you used to create this document has expired? I fear I cannot …

On the other hand, I would also believe that it might make sense to push smaller fixes and improvements faster to the users, if possible. But it is, admittedly, very hard to assess from a user’s perspective, what should be considered a “small” fix or improvement, since such a seemingly small change might have numerous consequences in the code base.

Anyway, thanks for your hard work …  :)
    Alex
