    V2: A MARVEL

    Hi Affinity Friends,

I hope all is well! I just would like to say something about the following...
To Anyone feeling aggrieved about having to pay for an upgrade to V2...

Guys!? You have to realize that the application landscape has changed over the years. What we have been witnessing - if some of us have been paying attention - is that there has been a change of business model in terms of pricing to users of various applications - including Serif's amazing Affinity range. As we all know, Adobe went to a Subscription Model, which works fine for those who are able to make a considerable living in Graphic & Multimedia Design. For those who aren't able to justify taking out a costly subscription, Serif has always been there for us. ALWAYS!!! Okay... Since they arrived on the scene (about some 30 years ago) with their Plus applications (Photo, Page, Web, and Design). Still, I, for one, am grateful for Serif applications! I went as far as Photoshop 7, and when Affinity Photo was released, I uninstalled Photoshop 7, and have not looked back.

Any of you do music? Well, for your information, there has been a shake up in the Computer Music Industry as well as the Graphic & Multimedia Industry... Like Serif, a small collective by the name of Cockus - a little weird, I know - have taken hold of the Computer Music Industry with an amazing new DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), REAPER! Now, it has a fantastic price to the user model: $60 for a non professional license - if you are not making loads of money from your music. Then there is a professional licence that is $225. This is superb - especially when taking into account the costs of other DAWs! Of course, you have to renew the licence when a new version is released. That is still better than a lot of other DAWs!

So, we shouldn't complain that we have to renew our licences for V2 of the Affinity range! It's the only way that a small sized company can continue to make waves - producing great, great applications! As soon as Affinity V2 came out, I made my purchase the same day! The upgrade value was / is so very generous! I am at a loss to understand why people feel that they've been let down for having to pay for a new version. I prefer this sales model to the subscription model.

I feel so very proud to have made my purchase on the same day of release! I am proud to support Serif. C'mon... The Universal Licence is a freaking steal! If you don't want to upgrade, then it is likely you can carry on using V1 applications. I don't understand why you are unable to see how Serif has given us - not only superlative applications that have at last garnered recognition from the Creative IT industries - but a bonkers upgrade opportunity! It's a no brainer!

NOT QUITE WHAT I WAS EXPECTING?

Look! When it comes to Creative IT applications, and "Something Big Is Coming" teasers, my mind is going to conjure up all sorts! I really thought that we were getting Affinity Web Designer. Why? I still enjoy creating websites, and I was rather hoping that I could use Affinity Publisher in conjunction with (my fantasy Affinity Web Designer) to produce interactive Digital Publications in the form of HTML 5 executables (exe), PDFs with custom audio and video controls, or even something new... Why not? Serif could create a new standard in Digital Publications - like PDF - to great effect! I am envisioning PowerPoint-like Multimedia presentations to revolutionize Digital Publishing! Affinity Web Designer or iMedia (as I call it) can act as a plugin - of sorts - to Publisher for Digital Publications - including websites!

Obviously, we did not get this Affinity Web Designer (iMedia) application... It turned out that this "one more thing" was Affinity Publisher for the iPad. Cool. Despite that little bit of disappointment, I made my purchase on the same day as V2 was announced! That's right... I stated it again, because I am so proud and thankful!

    CONCLUSION

For those who still feel bitter about having to pay a small fee for Affinity V2, you really need to do your research, and understand how application development works!

    Thank you! 😇

    NO SENSE

Guys! I am not here to cause issues or to get into fights with anyone... But this quote above is typical of someone that does not know how applications are developed. Doesn't understand the extreme value in the V2 applications with a Universal Licence Upgrade option! You cannot get any fairer than that! I don't know if Serif made it clear that an upgrade to a new version was going to cost... To me, this is common sense that Serif would have to charge - albeit a relatively small one when taking the Universal Licence into account.

Again, other small application developers have adopted a similar sales model. I must admit, I did not understand this model when I bought a Digital Audio Workstation called REAPER! When a new version came out, I was like, "What? I have to pay for a new version?" But I get it now... I felt embarrassed because I didn't understand that sales model. Now that I do, I will keep supporting the people behind REAPER, and Serif! Once again, I have dashed Adobe applications because of Affinity! I do not want a subscription model! I will pay for V3, V4, etc.

I am truly baffled that the person quoted above does not understand and appreciate how applications are developed - especially by a small team! 😲 If we want Affinity Photo do adopt AI, we have to continue to support Serif! Once again, I have ditched Adobe for Serif Affinity! I even used to use pirated Adobe software - especially Illustrator. Now, those days are over! Many small software developers have done wonders for respective industries, e.g. Black Magic and its DaVinci Resolve professional video editing application that has caused many to ditch Adobe Premiere. Then there's the aforementioned Cockos REAPER, which has toppled Music Industry staples like Cubase, Ableton Live, and ProTools. Look! If you want quality professional industry standard applications, we have to be prepared to support smaller application developers. It's not rocket science!

    Thank you! 😇

From my experience using Apple computers since 1993, this is how software sales work. You don't get new versions free, unless you've won a contest or work for the company. The people who write code have to pay for their rent and food somehow. Giving everything away free in perpetuity does not allow for that.

    Q. What do you do for a living, and can I get you to do it for free for the rest of my life as well if I pay you once? (Don't say "psycho killer," cause that would derail my joke).

You did receive what you paid for: free updates to the version you purchased.
All software has a limited shelf and maintenance life, software publishers iterate new versions as a part of a stable and reliable business model.
As I said above, I have been purchasing new versions since the mid-90s. I could, in theory, build a Win 95 machine and roll back to Page Plus 3 in protest, I suppose.

I  think that Affinity Publisher has to surpass InDesign like Affinity Photo has surpassed Photoshop and like Designer has blown Illustrator out of the water!
EPUB; HTML5 and, at least, Android apps should be included. I would imagine that it is pretty easy to use HTML5 for iOS as I do believe that there is a stringent process to get apps on the Apple App Store.

    AFFINITY PUBLISHER & DIGITAL PUBLICATIONS

"Affinity Publisher will be crafted to help professional designers get the very best results on every layout, page, magazine, book, and digital publication, with stunning typography and vibrant colour."

I don't know if this is jumping the gun but... As a user of PagePlus, Quark Xpress, and InDesign I can tell you that PagePlus is up there when it comes to paper-based publishing. However, PagePlus has always fallen short in the area of digital publishing. The audio and video players embedded in PDF files looked really bad in comparison to InDesign produced PDF files with audio and video files embedded within. InDesign one is able to output to Flash (at least when I was using version 5 of the Adobe Suite). Sure, Flash is dead.

One of the attributes that I would like within Affinity Publisher would be to create beautiful, elegant looking PDF files with audio and video embedded. The

    HTML5
Another attribute would be to export to HTML5... Here I envisage web-like pages that can include PowerPointesque slideshows; magazine style web pages and so on. I would imagine that HTML5 could create and include some nice transitions between pages/slides.

    EPUB
Oh! Yes! When it came to EPublications, PagePlus was abysmal. I would want the EPUB capabilities to produce excellent and consistent results each and every time.

    MOBILE APPS & EXES
I would also like Affinity Publisher to produces APKs for Android and the equivalent for iOS apps. I would imagine that this can be achieved by using a combination of HTML5 and Java.

    NO WEBPLUS EQUIVALENT???
I think it was Alfred who stated that there will be no WebPlus equivalent in the Affinity range and that web page production will not be supported in the forthcoming Affinity Publisher. Is that correct? That would be a terrible shame as WebPlus is such a decent web design application. Affinity Publisher, in theory, could pick up the web design slack. I always appreciated that PagePlus could output pages to HTML. As you can tell from the above text that I am hoping that Affinity Publisher would feature HTML5 output.

I do think that web pages and web design are evolving into what I would call "Channels" whereby the web page is looking pretty much like a TV channel - especially now that video has become a major part of the web. I reckon that a "Channel" approach to web pages produced with Affinity Publisher may be the way to go.

Well, that's my 2 cents worth! Oh, did I say that I am very curious about Affinity Publisher?

I think that Serif has worked enormously hard on Designer & Photo - those applications are great! People in the design world are praising those apps from Serif! You read and hear terms such as, "Photoshop Killer," "Easier and more powerful than Illustrator," and so on. So, there is a tremendous amount of pressure for Serif to get Affinity Publisher right from the first release. That is not going to be easy! Quark & InDesign are powerful apps and Serif have its work cut out. I predict that a beta will be ready for March 2017 and a possible release would be August 2017. I guess I am a little optimistic!   :D  :P

We are pleased to announce the first update for Affinity Designer for Windows (version 1.5.1).

The update is described here and can be downloaded from here. Once downloaded, close Affinity Designer and run (double click) the downloaded EXE to install it.

To install this version you will need to have the Affinity Designer for Windows already installed OR you will need to type in your email address and a valid Product key when prompted. When installing on top of an existing version you will not be prompted for the product key. If you need it you can find your product key (and a download button) in your Affinity store account, where you will also find the email address used to generate the key when you ordered the software.

If you have installed any previous beta version of Affinity Designer 1.5.0 or 1.5.1, it can be safely uninstalled before or after installing this release update, they are independent installs. The beta will stop working soon anyway.

Please report any problems you have installing or using this new version in the Windows forum here

One way to surpass InDesign is typography. InDesign has been struggling with that for years now and has every fallen behind Quark so badly publishers are saving money in page count when printing books by using Quark vs InDesign. But Publisher doesn't have to beat any of those. It has to beat LaTex, or at least get to parity.

For web typography, supporting the latest OpenType features is a must now that the problem with legacy browsers is fading away. Colour and SVG based OpenType fonts is one thing. Variable fonts is quite another. It saves download time for the user since you only have to serve one font to provide all the weights. Recent Safari versions handle this well.

Also for ePub, support of iBook packages would be great as well as the ability to create them as well as some way of easy round tripping with Tumult's Hype.

Strong support for this request, especially for the Epub support. InDesign CC has a VERY attractive feature called Publish Online which I use often. BUT everything I've published there will disappear once I stop the CC subscription. So if the HTML5 option will do what Publish Online will do, that would be wonderful.
