  1. @obtusity Thanks for the reply and your example file.

As you say it works well enough in very simple cases, but will become cumbersome if one is trying to select dozens of shapes. More so if they are complicated in any way: small, gradient fills, different strokes, overlapping.

Indeed go back to your example file and try to select everything in order to add a new, second pixel layer. It is already significantly harder.

I am sure that with a little thought the development team could improve selection of multiple vector objects, after all I can already select multiple items in the Layer studio, and can Ctrl + click, so now need to do both at the same time!

  2. In the attached file I have some vector objects that I'd like to paint into using the Pixel Persona.

In each case I created the object, then added an new pixel layer and dragged it inside, to nest it.

    • With the Single Object (pink square)
A nested pixel object is clipped to the area of the square.

    • With the Compound Object (2 orange stars)
A nested pixel object is invisible!

    • With the Group of Objects (3 blue circle)
A nested pixel object just becomes another object in the group.
It is not clipped by the other objects in the group..

    • With the Layer Containing Objects
A nested pixel object just becomes another object on the layer.
It is not clipped by the other objects on the layer.

Although this behavior is consistent with the way that each type of object behaves (individual, compound, group, and layer) the resulting effect on the pixel layer is wildly different.

What I am after is the result in the simple, single object scenario: to be able to paint into the vector shapes.

As a work around I tried Ctrl + clicking the objects in the Layers Studio to create a free (marching ant) type selection that would constrain the painting. This generally works for all object types, but has the drawbacks that the marching ants are distracting, and I can only select one object/group/layer at a time.

Could Ctrl + clicking be extended to allow multiple objects/groups/layers to be selected at once?

Finally, is there a better way of selecting an arbitrary set of objects (of different types, possibly across multiple layers) and constraining pixel paint to those areas?

  3. Please could the Preferences search box also search the Keyboard Shortcuts?

At present if I am trying to find an action to check / alter the Keyboard Shortcut I have to know where that shortcut resides.

If I don't (and I may not even know whether a shortcut can be assigned to a given action) then I have to trawl through the whole list.

Even better - filter the shortcuts by the search term to remove all the options that I don't want to see.

Case in point: I'd like to find whether I can assign a shortcut to Show Rotation Centre, and have gone cross eyed looking for the option!

    Thanks.

  4. You are correct that at present there is no option to align to last selected object, or bounds of back-most object (as Xara Designer does it).

This is a feature that has been requested many times before and is on the common requested features list…

However, your example is simple to achieve using snapping rather than the Arrange tool. Simply drag the line over the Square, with Snapping enabled, and the line will drop into place beautifully.

I am sure there are other more complex examples that would require upgraded Arrange tool, but many things can be done with the right Snapping options enabled.

  5. Snapping works on vector objects.

This is a bitmap which Designer sees only as a rectangle shape.

You can snap to the four corners or even the center with ease, but Designer will not interpret the content and allow you to snap to the corners of the flashing cursor for example.

You will either have to eyeball or use a bitmap tracer to recreate this.

Eyeballing may not be too bad, if you set up a grid of 1 pixel size, and make sure align to whole pixels is enabled, plus snap to grid.

  6. This came up before in another thread and I seem to remember that the Devs said they'd take a look to see if Text in Symbols could be improved (ie Make the attributes separate as R C-R describes above)
