Gianni Becattini got a reaction from walt.farrell in APub does not start on Intel platform only
Additional: If I relink the images, everything seems ok until I save and then reopen the file.
The files are on the same disk as the afpub file on both computers (same folder tree on both computers)

    Hi Walt, thanks for replying.
After some tribulations, I believe I found the problem, probably of hardware origin. The possible culprit could be a USB adapter used for the second monitor. After I removed it, everything seems again to work correctly, including Nicepage and I had no more crashes.
This evening I will try with a different adapter.
    Sorry for the false alarm.

My technical/photo book about ancient electronic oscilloscopes has been released and is available worldwide thanks also to Amazon. It is for me a great satisfaction: it seems wonderful to me, with its hard cover and about 600 high quality black paper (I avoid to give you more details to not try to exploit this forum as advertisement). The first bunch of books was oversold in few days.
All that wouldn't have been possible without your precious and skilled help, which allowed an electronic engineer like me to become almost a "little graphic designer".
    Thanks from my heart!

I receive the "Error missing characters" during Preflight every time I use a special character such a greek letter or an emoticon. The produced file seems to be good. Where am I wrong?
    Thanks

Yes, you're right... but since many years, the virtual memory should swaps to disk and make the machine even infinitely slow... but never crash. One trillion years ago I wrote an operating system for a Z280 processor, a Z80 with Virtual Memory Manager, something that most people never heard... OK, sometimes it crashed, but I was not Apple and the Z280 was not an M2.
The application should not be aware of the available memory, it's an OS duty to make it transparent (besides speed).
I could bet that the crash is not due to memory but to something else. Future releases of APub or a future purchase of a fully-memorized M2 will tell us the truth...
However I fully agree with you, thanks

Thanks for replying, Walt, and best wishes!
Changing file format for images is for me not real; it would require weeks and this is for me just an hobby. But I hope that in time all these bugs will be corrected. Having the aphoto file directly included avoids lot of errors and makes maintenance/correction very fast. I insist that a trace file of what Publisher does could be a big help for both the users and the developers; in the worst case, you could try to decode where the catastrophe happened.
In the meantime, I wish a long life to my 64G Mac...
Thanks for all the help you gave me in 2023 and a wonderful 2024 to you and everybody here!
    Gianni

Gianni Becattini got a reaction from R C-R in APub files don't open anymore
Sorry for having not been clear. It is an afpub file, part of a book, that I have been using normally until shortly before, than it no longer opens (I tried also CMD/O with the same effect). I tried either from inside the book, either from finder.
I get no error message; simply nothing happens. The workaround is to copy it, to remove the old file, and rename the copy.
I supposed that some hidden file could be present in the folder, but it isn't. I tried also to move the file in another folder, with no effect.
I am using the latest version of APab, with updated version of Sonoma, on a MacBookPro M2 with 16G RAM.
    Thanks

I am the one who started this topic, so I cannot be suspected of ...connivance with the enemy 😁
I had a long experience with FrameMaker and some with Indesign and Photoshop and had some endless fights with Adobe. Their products also are not flawless and their support is simply a joke. In addition, I have several paid licenses that I cannot any longer use. I had no serious answers from them... simply they don't register anymore and eventually I gave up.
All that to say that Affinity has its (many) problems, first of all APub stability. Recently things are getting better and I no longer regret having used it instead of the Adobe suite (which I still pay).
IMHO, however, the best part of Affinity is this forum. Used to the Adobe support ("Did you remember switching on your computer? Many people forget its... Oh yes, it's on, but you must ask Apple, not us..."), here I can find competent people, very quick answering and trying to find real solutions together, without any politically correct attitude.
In the end, beside reasonably good products and a fair pricing policy, for me this forum is the best reason to continue using the Affinity suite. Don't underevaluate it, it's a true difference.

Yes, I do but for that I need my backups (now all my photos have been modified) - I can do in the weekend when I am home.
The pronblem arose because the Editor checked my pdfs with some tool and he found many superimposed photos.

I understand and fully agree. I also, continuing to think, was arriving at the same conclusions. Even if I can understand the printer problem.
Knowing that Indesign and QXP do the same is very important.

    Congratulations, Walt, you won!
Almost every chapter developed a second section with "start from page" option. Don't ask me why, certainly I didn't create them. But having removed them, things seem again in the right direction.
By the way, I believe I find often chapters which changed from "continue numbering" to "start from".
But the important is that I am again in the race... thanks!

@MikeTO I believe I realised that you also came in our "zona fessi", producing very good books for free...😁. It is difficult to translate "zona fessi" in English. Google translates it "Idiot zone", but this term is too strong and does not give the idea.
Beside the fact that the same is applicable to me as well, I am only joking and don't want to be disrespectful. On the contrary, I greatly appreciate your work.

I already tried to change to 0 the left indent (instead of "no change") but in my case the behavior did not change.
P.S. Thanks for your appreciation. The book is completely free and is downloadable from http://www.k100.biz/parade.htm, if you like to see it. This is only a hobby for me, but now I am working on a book that is going to be printed. So, I had to learn a lot about graphics, to prepare a professional document. That is the reason why I am so much annoying this forum. Thanks to all you, friends, may be that I eventually succeed.... 😁
