  1. List of working apps in my system (Windows11/AP 2). I'm running the latest versions available, unless stated differently:

    • FilterForge (10 was working, so did 12. I updated to the most recent version 14 which is also working)
    • G'MIC
    • NikCollection (the old free one, provided by Google. Might be a bit tricky to find a reliable source for them, so be careful!)
    • various PlugIns from Richard Rosenman
    • Skylum Numinar Neo
    • Topaz DeNoise AI (version: 3.7.2 - haven't updated since)
    • Topaz Sharpen AI (version: 4.1.0  - haven't updated since)

I used to have a couple more of them running on my old rig, but didn't install them on my new as I found out, I haven't used them in ages.

  2. Just FYI, nVidia rolled out a hotfix for Windows 10/11 which is not covered by their app's auto update features. One has to install it manually:

    GeForce Hotfix Driver Version 572.65

The version 572.60 caused quite a few more issues on many Windows systems beyond just affecting Affinity apps. For example, users have reported black screens at boot, black screens in several games after a while, failure to reactivate the monitor from energy-saving mode, or even from a simple timed display off state.

(Tagging @NathanC here, so you're aware about it - in case some similar issues arise in other threads or support tickets).

  3. I tried to search for this topic for previous versions, but to no avail (maybe not using the correct terms).

Since V2.6 is out of beta status, if there is a V2.7 beta (yes, I know, it might be months and months ahead!), will the beta apps usually be upgradeable to that new major version? I'm currently undecided whether to keep the current beta on my system or not. If we'd have to install V2.7 beta anew anyway rather than upgrading a current beta, I might uninstall it until then.

Unfortunately, my old brain can't remember anymore whether the old betas have been upgradeable to the next version (it's been quite a while since I installed V2.6 beta on a fresh system without the need to upgrade an old beta version).

  4. Sorry for not being sorry about reviving this thread – I know, it's vintage...

Yet, this is still one of the top results when searching Google for a solution to the problem. So, I thought I'd bump it in case someone else is still facing this issue with FF V14 and gets redirected from Google to here.

I'm running Affinity Photo (and the AP beta) on Windows, but the EXE versions - I don't know if it works for the MSI installation as well!

@adam1762 's solution (1) is still working! Replacing

    <IndependentUI value="false"/>

    with

    <IndependentUI value="true"/>

in the config file does the trick for me for the latest version of Filter Forge 14.

  5. Any 3D editor might be able to interchange .obj files, but not whole (natively saved) sceneries with features only available in certain 3D apps. But that's what you're trying to do. Comparing the lack of exchanging .obj files is like saying you couldn't exchange any objects from your layouts via PDF, PNG, whatever between Adobe and Affinity.

But all back-and-forth discussion is pointless, if ...

that's a priority, you've done wrong, sorry. If Interoperability is something your professional workflow requires, you simply don't rely on third party apps. Period. That's the wrong situation for being a cheapskate. Pay for Adobe, 1-2 jobs per month should already pay multiple times for the suite's subscription.

so much times passed, and still NO NEWS? FOr many potential buyers Affinity Suite looks ok, but its useless if i sometimes i need to cooperate and send editable source to someone having InDesign... IDML would do... now i have to consider expensive Adobe crap, just to get way to share sources in compatible way

What a weird expectation, needing to work in an Adobe-focussed environment, but expecting non-Adobe apps helping you with that endeavour.

Don't get me wrong, as much as I'd love to see a better Adobe-related exchange of data, I never would expect a third party tool would have to help me, if I need to co-work with people using Adobe's apps.

That's like joining a French cuisine restaurant as a chef and insisting on only using Indian ingredients. Sure, Indian food is great, but it's not what the kitchen is set up for, and you'll end up complicating everyone's workflow.

  7. You need to make sure that the actual lines/nodes are touching or overlapping each other. What I mean by this: If your line has a 10 px stroke width, it's not sufficient if such strokes overlap or touch each other. You can check in the wireframe view if there are still gaps in your design which prevent areas from getting filled.

Check this example: It seems like the blue lines are creating a fillable space in their centre. But at the top, the two lines are not touching each other, leaving a gap between them which prevents the fill.

It isn't. Part of if not the main reason for that is could be 100 or more macros in the Libraries (there certainly are in mine!) so users would very quickly run out of available shortcuts, not to mention how complicated & tedious it would be to find those one wants to use in what could be a huge list of them in the Settings/Preferences panel.

Hm. You don't add a shortcut to every macro in the library. But if you have a repeating workflow in your daily job that requires the use of 1-2 macros countless times per day, having quick access via shortcut would be much more convenient and faster than keeping the library window open all the time. It also won't occupy space on your desktop

This CPU only has 8 cores, but because of how long this is taking to export files I'm beginning to consider downgrading to an older processor with more cores

I have an AMD R9 7900x (12 cores), but my GPU isn't remotely as strong as yours (RTX 4070ti OC). If you want me to test it with your files, feel free to contact me directly in case you don't want to share the file publicly. I'll delete it immediately after testing the export.

It is a bit of a paradox, since you can use Publisher to check the InDesign files, but you can't translate Publisher files with the same tools.

    Just a guess:

Publisher probably uses Adobe's SDKs, libraries, or tools to enable file import functionality. And they pay for a licence for being able to do so. Such license might involve lower costs than exporting functionality, as importing does not enable the user to create new INDD/IDML files.

Often costs are the reason behind such decisions.

  11. I'd like to add another workaround.

As for Photoshop's native files, online editor photopea often works better with some of the features, which aren't supported by Affinity's apps. I was able to convert some PSD files that way, which were completely messed up when opening in Affinity Photo directly.

Assuming you mean the AD Pencil Tool, where do you see a smoothness setting for it?

My bad, you're right: I didn't realise it's on the beta only—it feels like I've been using this truly useful feature for so long now, I could have sworn it came with V2.0 release.

Yet that actually seems to solve OP's problem. So either wait for the V2.6.X stable release or use the current beta...

Well, quite a few of my old buddies from those sectors eventually switched into DTP and became graphic designers, thus taking work away from us actual graphic designers, in fact.

    Is it?

It has been like that forever. I, by the way, am one of the people who experienced the change from analogue to digital you've mentioned myself. Either adapt to new technologies, or you won't last in the business. This isn't only limited to design sectors; every new technology brings changes to any business sector.

On the other hand, if some (cheap) business solely relies on AI doing their design work, they wouldn't have hired a designer anyway. So, it's not taking away any designer's work at all. Your argument is just like authorities such as the EUIPO Observatory or USPTO, who calculate their losses from piracy by assuming every single pirated song or movie would have been paid for otherwise. That's not how the world works.

Not every AI-generated piece of content replaces a designer, but if designers implement AI into their workflow, it can massively speed up processes and make the work easier.

There were a lot of people that thought Adobe and Quark was going to ruin the industry.

Well, they kinda did for some sectors. E.g. phototypesetters, analogue pre-press layouters, and film developers, etc. It's easily comparable to the current AI development. AI has just started to change the design sector and already has some massive impact. People working within this sector will have to adapt or eventually be left behind, developers of apps included.

  15. First, I want to say thank you for sharing!

One question: by the looks of things, the "Gradients2024" might be a combined palette of the other three. Is that correct? (Because I'd install only that one, if that's correct.)

I'd certainly be much, much faster doing the selection with the Selection Brush Tool  - or with the Flood Selection Tool on the plain-colored background. This might apply to many illustrations and especially for the example @Andy05 provided above.

    3 hours ago, kaffeeundsalz said:

You might think that illustrations should be easy, but from my testing, results are almost always better with real photos. Pretty sure this has to do with what the models were trained for.

Yes, I came to pretty similar results like @Juhani in his comparison for photos (I also had Luminar Neo for testing on this). The illustration was just for further testing purposes in order to see if the algorithm is mainly focusing on stark contrast in images.

Of course, other tools are way superior for masking in such cases.

Therefore, I totally agree with @carl123 - in conjunction with some additional tweaking (mask refining), the new feature is quite useful. And probably improving the mask refinement feature is the way to go in the future.

BTW, I am actually one of them "AI can't (and shouldn't) do everything for you, but it can be a great aid during your workflow"-persons.
