Columns are per text frame, not per page. Set up a text frame with the columns as you want them, and then click on the 8D4882C3-43D5-4515-9E29-E4CD6B221C36.png.fd33e9bff2f07ec0248b59d50916a387.png ‘Synchronize defaults from selection’ icon on the main toolbar to make any further text frames adopt the same format.

Yes, but...

In ID & Q & ..., one can set up both primary/automatic text frame and columns in the new document dialog box. This creates both column guides on the page and in the primary/automatic text frames. Much, much handier for the user.

Columns are per text frame, not per page. Per page you additionally have the option to create a grid, vertically + horizontally, which supports you visually and with snapping when creating text frames in such a custom page grid.

A text frame, created on such a grid, is snapping with its size, whereas you additionally have the option to set the frames inset AND its columns gutter:

With this flexibility of grid area options you can achieve object snapping in a complex grid without the use of any guide line:

  1. Create new multipage document with facing pages set,
  2. Go to master page and on each page draw a text frame,
  3. Set the frames to any number of columns,
  4. Link the frames,
  5. Go to first page and insert a text.

Like I wrote, that is more work. But thank you for pointing that out clearly.

I know. But this is the only way. I hope for not too long.
