[Designer] Hide text outside of text box?

Recommended Posts

When text exceeds the size of a text box, it is still visible on the artboard.

Coming from AI, I'm used to the text being cut off, and I prefer it that way because it more easily helps me figure out what can fit in a specific space.

Additionally, I think the way you change the size of the text box is inconsistent because while I can make the box shorter without changing the flow of text, as you see in the screenshot, if I try to make the same box narrower, it will re flow. Just a thought. Mainly, at this point, all I care about is if it's possible to toggle a setting somewhere so text will be hidden, if it is beyond the size of the text box.

Overflowing text can be hidden in Publisher, but not Designer.

You are correct that the reflowing is inconsistent… but that is the way it is!

Designer came out a long time before Publisher and the difference is still there so I would say it was intentional.
Since Designer has no frame-to-frame text flow it’s probably better if the user can see the extra text rather than it being hidden, otherwise it might be forgotten, which could be a really bad thing.
Note: Filler Text in Designer will not overflow the text frame unless you use the Expand Field function and then make the text frame smaller.

I would vote to have the option to hide overflow in ADesigner. Workaround: File -> "Edit in Publisher", change the text frame overflow, File -> "Edit in Designer". But this is not really an option.

I think I’d prefer to ‘sit on the fence’ on this one.
I can imagine cases where it might be good to have the text temporarily hidden – “I don’t want to deal with that at the moment” – but I can also imagine more cases where it’s better to see it so it doesn’t get forgotten – “the text should be seen so deal with it now” (I have a bad memory so that’s what would be better for me).
If I had to pick a side I would probably come down on whichever makes it work the same as Publisher, but that’s just for the sake of consistency, even if it goes against my personal needs. I don’t normally use long texts in Designer so I don’t know what would work best for most people.

Nope it's not supported in AD for Frametext. - You can only clip here to a rect shape etc. of your docs background color in order to hide portions of longer Frametext, which is probably not what you want in your case.

It can't work completely "the same" as in Publisher as that would also require having linked text frames. I suppose it could work similarly, with respect to hiding the overflow.
