doeboy
stupid question but why 2 tools that perform the same task? Alfred

A_B_C
I’d be very disappointed ordering a pie and getting just a donut … ;) (The same question could be asked with respect to rectangles and rounded rectangles, so I believe the answer is “tradition” … but it is interesting that the donut tool is labeled “pie” on the context toolbar … so should we actually get a pie when we are ordering just a donut … :o)
Alfred
We don't even need separate tools for donuts and pies, since the Ellipse Tool gives us 'Convert to Donut' and 'Convert to Pie' buttons on the Context toolbar. R C-R
We could get rid of the triangle tool & even the rectangle one because the polygon tool can create those shapes. In a pinch, the Cog too can create ellipses (if you don't mind the extra nodes), & the polygon one can create circles with just three nodes. The diamond tool can create triangles; the trapezoid tool can create squares or right triangles; the segment tool circles; & so on. A_B_C
Well, that is a false overgeneralisation, R C-R. You will always have to take the red control points into account. It is not just about creating shapes, but also about controlling them in a specific way … ;) Ben
Alfred
Well, that is a false overgeneralisation, R C-R. I disagree, A_B_C. I would say it's a true over-generalization! :D A_B_C 1 Quote Alfred Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for Windows • Windows 10 Home/Pro Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for iPad • iPadOS 17.4.1 (iPad 7th gen)

R C-R
Well, that is a false overgeneralisation, R C-R. You will always have to take the red control points into account. It is not just about creating shapes, but also about controlling them in a specific way … ;) I knew some nit picker would say that, which is why I was careful to say only that those tools could create those shapes. A_B_C
Hmm … I really don’t want to answer that … Anyway, my understanding was that this thread is about tools that perform exactly the same functions, not about tools that are capable of creating the same shapes. Following your argument, we could dispense with all the smart shape tools, since you can create triangles, diamonds, cogs, hearts, tears, even cats by simply using the Pen Tool. Why don’t you go ahead and suggest removing all the smart shape tools then? Obviously because that doesn’t make sense …
Petar Petrenko
We don't even need separate tools for donuts and pies, since the Ellipse Tool gives us 'Convert to Donut' and 'Convert to Pie' buttons on the Context toolbar. And when you start eating it, it is automatically "convert to curves". :D It would be nice to put rectangle and elipse tools together with triangle and the others, and remove the rounded rectangle from the tool's palette. It could be drawn by using the red control points on the rectangle tool. Petar Petrenko
I think the donut needs an extra red control point just to control the inner ellipse to move it out of center. Staff Ben Posted September 20, 2016 Staff Share Posted September 20, 2016 Your example shows a circle inside an ellipse. So, you wouldn't be able to replicate this anyway - in our donut the hole matches the outer ellipse profile. And - if you need this shape desperately, you can always convert to curves. There are only so many ways we want to offer shape customisation, after that just use shapes, curves and compounds.
