I don't understand the system of converting nodes to smooth, smart, and smooth carve tools.

Can someone help me understand these tools better?

Is your confusion about what the tools do, or about what the types of Nodes are?

This Help page describes the distinction between Smooth, Sharp, and Smart Nodes: https://affinity.help/designer2/en-US.lproj/pages/CurvesShapes/about_linesAndShapes.html

@BBG3, please do not add any music to your videos, at least without warning that you have done so. Sometimes I read stuff late at night or other times when loud audio would disturb others.

Also, please keep in mind that not everyone's taste in music is the same, & that music rarely if ever makes what the videos show.

Thanks!

I tried to smooth my curves. It seems that the smooth and smart tools do not read and convert the orientations of my original curve lines like Illustrator and VectorScribe; they just switch the tools and change the curves to some default directions.

I was wondering if there is a workaround... such as combining some tools, holding a key or a Python script, ...

I'm so sorry, it was an accident! You have been in this forum for a long time and you've seen my posts. I hope you understand me.

Thanks for the additional info. Perhaps the Help topic on Editing Curves would be useful, especially its section on To Delete Nodes?

To Delete Nodes

Thank you @walt.farrell. I had to use Illustrator tools to fix the issue I faced. I didn't know Fit To Curve Delete Node existed. I will check this tool more in deep. Thanks a lot for your help.

I'm going to share the comparison between two application, converting nodes to smooth.

The unsatisfactory work of the “Smooth Curve” function has been discussed quite a few times. – Here is a relatively recent Serif comment:

We have some historical reports logged of user files encountering paths 'collapsing' when using the smooth curves function as well as a more specific report on curve sections being removed entirely. I've created a quick sample file comprised of straight paths I am also observing these same failures shown in the recording and screenshot. The function does certainly have room for much improvement so i'll log this with the developers.

Ideally a 'Simplify Path' function similar to illustrators would be beneficial in this scenario so hopefully it will be considered in a future version as it is a popular request.
