Hi Guys,

Was using the Old Affinity Photo Ver.1 as was on an Old Windows Compute, just migrated to a M2 MacOS and I am intrigued by the Noise Removal Feature which is there in the Filters Section in the Menu of Affinity Photo Ver.2 how does this thing work ? How do I use it ?

And does it do an equally good job of removing Noise from a Photo as some dedicated Noise Remova Al APP do ? Like Photo AI from Topaz Labs and ON1 Photo Raw 2024 ?

@augustya If you will look at Affinity Photo 2 Help, Filters and effects>Noise filters, you will be able to click on before and after images of what the Noise>Denoise Filter does. I have no idea how it compares with other apps, but it does a very nice job for me. I hope this may help.  ("Typeface" got into the screenshot by accident.)

@augustya there is also a Live version of this filer which is non-destructive. They both work well, but are not AI based.

There's also a denoise function in the Develop Persona, if you're working with Raw files. (As mentioned in that Tutorial.)

Hi Guys,

I am facing an issue so when I go to live filters and apply Denoise to the Pixel Layer the main pixel layer the Denoise appears for making changes, but it does not add as a different layer in the Layers Panel I cannot see it as an individual layer. Can someone please tell me why is this happening ?

Please provide a screenshot, with the complete application window, and the Layers panel visible, before and after clicking to add the Live Filter. Or, perhaps better, a screen recording so we can see what you're doing.

There is the option to add as a New Layer or to add it nested inside the selected layer. Your Layers panel will show a nested layer like this.

Click on the little triangle to expand like this.

The Assistant will allow you to set "based on selection" or "as new layer"

so I just found out there are two ways that you can add Live Filters from the Top Menu panel and from the layers panel so when I try to add from the menu Panel it does not get add to the layers only if  add it from the Layer studio it shows as an individual layer. I wonder what is the difference between the two ? why does it work this way?

As I said before, please provide screenshots or a recording. Or a sample document where this happens to you.

Just guessing but it probably has nothing to do with where you add the live filter, only if at that time a layer is selected or not ... and how you have "Adding filter layer to selection" in Settings > Assistant configured.

@walt.farrell

As requested please find attached the screen recording. so in this recording if you see, When I try to add a Denoise Filter from the top Menu Bar it does not get added to the Pixel Layer in the ayers Panel. But when I add it from the Live filters option in the Layer Menu then it gets added so why so ? what is the difference between the two?

That's not a live filter but a destructive filter which cannot be edited afterwards.
Only Menu>layer>new live filter or the live filter button at the bottom in the layers panel are creating live filters.

So there are 3 ways one can add the DeNoise Filter in a Project !! I am so confused !!

There are two Denoise filters, a "live" one that creates a layer that can be enabled, disabled, or edited at any time (& thus is non-destructive) & a regular one that is applied directly to the selected layer, so it it cannot be edited or disabled once applied, thus it is destructive.

There are several other filters that come in both destructive & non-destructive versions.

Exactly.

There is ONE way to access the destructive Denoise filter...Filters > Noise > Denoise. Destructive filters must be applied directly to a PIXEL Layer, and once applied, they are permanent and non-editable (other than using CMD-Z or Undo from the Menu). Destructive Filters modify the content of that layer, and once done, it's baked into that pixel layer.

There are TWO ways to access the Live Filter. One is from the menu...Layer > New Live Filter Layer > Noise > Denoise. The other way to is click on the Live Filters icon at the bottom of the Layers Panel (it looks like an hourglass). Both of these methods generate the exact same filter; they're just different ways to create the exact same filter. This Live filter can be readjusted at any time and is non-destructive (i.e., it does not permanently alter data). It can reside on its own layer, above other layers, or it can be "nested" inside of a given layer or group. It depends on what you want to do, and how your Assistant options are set up.

From what I have read in this thread, I think you are confused because you need a better understanding of how to use Live Filters and Adjustment Layers, how they are applied, the Layers Panel and layers management, nesting layers, etc. These are basics, but very important if you want to use Affinity Apps effectively. So, if you watch some tutorials on these subjects, I believe your confusion will vanish. Check out the Tutorials on this forum, (Browse > Forums > Tutorials > Affinity Photo), or on YouTube. There are hundreds of instructive tutorials at your disposal.

And how do I apply the DeNoise Filter on only specific parts of the image I am on a Mac and I am doing Option+I to invert the Layer and want to draw in white where I want to apply the Filter. But Option+I is not doing anything I am doing this on the DeNoise Love Filter that is getting added to the Layer's Panel !

Try Command + I.

It's Command + I to Invert the layer, not Option+I.

You're trying to run before you've learned to walk...It's time to study the Fundamentals...Tutorials, Help Files, practice and experimentation. Without understanding the basics, you will continue to be frustrated.

I'll bow out now.

Been here and using Affinity Photo since 2019.

Learning is a constant endeavour and a continuous affair. And Affinity Photo Software is Mind Boggling vast and detailed not possible to first learn everything and then attempt doing things. Have to deliver something.

But thanks for the suggestion.
