The 2.5 beta version cannot display all Chinese font names

Recommended Posts

The scrolling in your video clip is too quick for me to see clearly, but it looks as though some names are displayed in Chinese characters, some are displayed in pinyin, and some are displayed in a mixture of the two.

The problem appears to be the fonts.

I only checked MF Yue Yuan - and the name fields are a complete mess.

Some fields are localized, some are not. The Mac names are different than the Windows names for the same fields. Fields which should match do not match. Fields which should be Chinese are English. Style names are included in some of the family name fields, and in the style field. Some fields include both English and Chinese. Wadda mess.

With this font - the font is definitely the problem.

If the others are similar, the fonts are the problem.

But as the OP's video seems to show them working properly in earlier releases of Affinity, perhaps there is a change in the way that 2.5 operates vs 2.4?

I did not even notice that in the video (the hard to follow video).

Given the variable support in 2.5 they had to make changes to how they process the names. With static fonts it is all in the name table. With variable you are still pulling the texts from name, but there are more "name" fields from the fvar and STAT tables.
Think of it as Family&Style (from name now) vs. Named Instances (from fvar).
So something had to change in how they process all the name fields.

BUT, that font is broken either way.
Not surprised there are issues in Affinity.
Probably issues in other applications too.
The font could be fixed so it works perfectly in any application, including Affinity.
With properly working localization.

Hi aji,

As others has mentioned its really hard to properly see what is going on in your video. A list of some of the affected fonts would also be useful!

Are you able to attach a small sample of the fonts that are appearing correct in 2.4 for you but not 2.5 to the link below please?

Thanks!

The issue "Chinese font names are not appearing in Chinese on Windows" (REF: AF-2913) has been fixed by the developers in internal build "2.5.0.2430".
This fix should soon be available as a customer beta and is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Affinity Info Bot to notify us.
