Interestingly, if I move the two layers out of the Artboard using the Layers panel, then I'm able to manipulate the background without any issues. It's the Artboard that's causing the issue. But if I do "something else" first (e.g. dragging objects around instead of left-clicking, nudging the objects), then it may have no crashes at all.
