Keyboard shortcuts for Geometry always create 'compound'

Recommended Posts

I have had Affinity Designer setup for years to use CTRL and the Plus/Minus keys on the number pad for 'Geometry Add' and 'Geometry Subtract'. I think it's because Inkscape had those and they made sense to me.

Anyway, recently the behaviour has changed and this key combination now creates a 'compound' shape every time. However when I use the buttons from the menu it works as before (destructive).

Is this a bug, or is there a toggle to prevent this behaviour?

Can you show us what your Keyboard Shortcuts in the Settings dialog looks like with those two shortcuts visible in it?

(I’ve attached an example from my set-up where I have no shortcuts for those functions.)

What happens when you try to use the same Geometry functions from the Toolbar?

What happens when you delete the shortcut and re-create it?

Hi there, thanks for the reply.

Here is my shortcuts screenshot:

I tried removing those and re-adding them, this didn't sort the problem unfortunately.

I have also tried this on my other PC and it also has the same issue.

When using the buttons from the menu bar....

...the behaviour is different and it just creates a path (which is the behaviour I want).

Clicking the Toolbar Add button gets me a Curve, while Alt-clicking the same button gets me a Compound, both of which I would expect.

I just changed my “Designer/Layer/Geometry → Add” shortcut to Ctrl+* (I don't have a 'normal' keypad on my laptop) and, strangely:

  • when I used that shortcut it created a Compound for me too, which is interesting, but;
  • when I selected the same functionality via the Layer menu (with the same shortcut listed) I got a Curve.

I don’t know what’s going on here, sorry.

Maybe someone else knows. (This kinda rings a bell from something years ago.)

According to the Help, if you hold Alt (Opt on Mac, I think) and perform a Geometry operation, you get a Compound. And that is the way it works in 2.3.1.

However, in 2.4.0, holding either Alt or Ctrl results in a Compound, so I think this is a new bug introduced in 2.4.

I've created a new bug report for this:

Like @Hangman mentioned in your bug report, this seems to be a Windows only bug. On my Mac, holding CTRL has no effect on the boolean geometry stuff -- it is simply ignored, so it is the same as an ordinary left-click.

The issue "[Win] Using a keyboard shortcut for Geometry > Add results in a compound shape as if ctrl + add was clicked." (REF: AF-2444) has been fixed by the developers in internal build "2.4.2.2356".
This fix should soon be available as a customer beta and is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Affinity Info Bot to notify us.
